WMV renders to black?

Howdy, y'all!

This is crazy-making, so I'll go cut the grass.

I have a WMV file that plays in the Vegas work area, but won't render. Renders to MPG and AVI result in a black video, with sound.

Sometimes, the clip shows a black picture when played within Vegas, also. The "thumbnail" in the Media Pool is a picture from the clip.

Windows Media Player says that the video is 320 x 240. Do I need to make any adjustments when I try to render it?

Any suggestions for extracting the video in a useable way?

Cheers,
Peyton

Sounds like Vegas is having trouble decompressing the file properly. Instead of worrying why, I would just try to open in another application. VirtualDub is pretty good at opening files other applications stumble on. If you can get it to play in that, just render out as a AVI, and then Vegas will be able to open it.

Another problem could be the file has a damaged or missing header. Try opening the WMV file in a command window (old DOS) then rename the extension to .mpg. That may do it. If not lots of tools out there that can fix broken videos. Some of mine include: ASF-AVI-RM-WMV Repair, AVI fixed, JPG Video, Konvertor, RM Converter and last but not least Video Fixer.
