workflow.

Hi

I have a question reg. workflow in vegas.

An example:

I put a long clip to the TL and want to cut something out in different places.
I mark the clip, put my marker at the cutpoint and press 's' to split the clip.

Now the clip to the right of the marker is selected. I can now move further down the TL and do some more cutting, without having to select the rest again.

My question now is: would it be possible with keystrokes to select the left after a cut to delete it, and then afterwards select the right one again to move further down the line and cut more, or would it be best to open the clip in the trimmer, select in and out and then 'a' add it to the timeline? For now I mouse select the left part, hit delete and then select the right part again to move on, and I think it would be possible to do it smarter somehow :-)

Thanks.

/Ulf

If you know ahead of time that you're going to want to delete the "left" event, the easiest thing would be -- instead of putting the cursor at single point and hitting "S" -- to make a time selection of what you want to delete and hit Delete. That makes all necessary splits and removes the offending content in one swoop.

Or, if you'd rather keep doing what you're doing, after you hit "S" to split, hit the "[" key twice. (That's the left square bracket.) The first time will select the event to the right of the split; the second time will select the event to the left. (Specifically, it selects an event edge, but the event itself gets selected in the process.)

Hi Rob

Thanks for your input.

I tried the '[' solution, but could not get it to work neither in ver. 7 or 8.

I put clip to TL, place marker, hit 'S' to split, and the marker stays at the cut and the right part of the clip is selected. I hit '[' several times but nothing happens... :-(

Don't know what to tell you. Works for me. I've used it from Vegas 4 all the way through Vegas 8.

Do a search of Vegas help for "event edge" and you'll find it listed right there among the default keyboard shortcuts. Maybe you've changed your shortcuts?

If that doesn't work, try "7" on the numeric keypad (not the "7" on the top row of your keyboard, though).

Ok, Rob - thanks again. Maybe it's another key in danish layout. Is there a line for it in the customize keyboard menu?

I tried the thing with the trimmer.

Mark In and Out and 'A' to send to timeline at markerpoint. Works great.

Only thing is that the marker stays at the In point when clip is send to timeline - I want it to stay at the outpoint or easily move it there. For me the most logical would be to have the marker in the trimmer stay at the outpoint, so that you could play back from there again for the next clip you wanted to cut out and send to TL.

Maybe it is just me that cannot figure out this workflow.... I have not given it too much thought before I yesterday edited a job with great many cuts, that's why I started to wonder how to do it smarter.

I guess I have to watch some good old VASST DVD's again :-)

What do you guys do when you have a lot of cuts?

Thanks...

It's assigned to Edit.Select.EventStart

What about the other method I mentioned: Making a time selection of what you want to delete, and just deleting it?

Why not just delete the active Loop-Region using the Del-key?

My method of accomplishing what I think you're asking;

Put long file on timeline. Leave ripple off.
Select areas to cut as a selection, using CTRL+X to cut. This creates holes in my timeline.
(I have a shortcut key on my mouse for CTRL+X)
Once I've cut out all the pieces, I use a script to close all gaps.
Works wonderfully well, allows me to speed edit long timelines.

Hi Rob

I just tried to edit and replace the two shortcuts, and now it works as hoped for.

Thanks all :-)

So, was that action assigned to a different key or what?

It was assigned to one of the " ´ " like keys on my danish keyboard, and maybe that was the thing - don't know for sure, but it's working now.

Thanks again, Rob.
