Working with and rendering Stereoscopic 3D

Dwuane wrote on 2/11/2014, 10:16 AM
Have Vegas Pro 12, and I'm new to 3D editing. I want to work with files from a Sony HDR TD30-V, set them up properly on the timeline and render them out as 3D Hi Def to an external hard drive or thumb drive so I can play them on my Vizio M55 3D Smart TV. I've tried side by side, and anaglyphic to no avail. My glasses that came with my TV aren't the Red/Blue type. Both lenses seem to be the same color. I can play the raw videos fine in 3D(with the glasses), but just can't seem to get this right. Need help. I know some of you guys will straighten me out and put me on the path. I'm using a PC, Windows 7. HELP!!! Not trying to burn Blu Ray. Thanks in advance. I've watched some videos on the subject but I'm still not doing something right.

Don't have a 3D TV so this is a bit of the blind leading the blind, sorry. Hopefully more help will be coming.

In the mean time...

Are you able to view your clips in Vegas in 3D?

If not, I'm guessing your project settings or the settings for the clips themselves need to be corrected.

If it's ok in Vegas, but not in the rendered video then you likely need to learn what 3D format your TV wants. I tried googling a manual for your TV, but what I found said nothing about that, d'oh! In that case you may have to just try the other render formats 'til one works.

Double check the 3D settings when you are rendering---by default Vegas uses the project settings. I usually edit in either side-by-side full or anaglyph then render in side-by-side half for YouTube by specifying that format in the final render menu. (Render as => Custom Template... => Project tab => Stereoscopic 3D mode)

Good luck & let us know when you find the answer.

The result will depend upon what your TV accepts in terms of 3D images. Mine is a
Sony and it has a set-up where you can choose the 3D format. I always use side-by-side and render to an MP4 and it works just fine.

The Vizio M55 3D Smart TV seems to be a passive display. Means, that you can render to side-by-side half in Vegas, or even top-bottom-half using 1080 50i (PAL) or 1080 60i (NTSC).

The footage can be played back from every 2D-Blu-ray player (so you can author that type of s3D footage as a 2D-Blu-ray) or even every harddrive player.

Important: it is very likely that the Vizio will not recognize the footage in side-by-side automatically. But I am sure that there is the possibility to set the Vizio to a side-by-side mode manually.

Another possibility should be to render the s3D footage with the Sony AVC encoder to MVC to either 720 50p/60p or 1080 24p - but here you have to burn a 3D-Blu-ray from either the timeline of Vegas Pro 10/11/12 or you have to use the DVDA6. Playback must take place using a 3D-Blu-ray player (so no 2D Blu-ray player), and this type of footage should be recognized automatically be the Vizio if using HDMI.

Out of curiosity (I might buy a 3D tv someday) do you guys use side-by-side half or side-by-side full?

Still having problems. My Vizio says side by side. Don't really see anyway to change that. Vegas recognizes my video as 3D, but I don't have a 3D monitor. If I put the original video on a hard drive or thumb drive, it plays perfectly, but if I try to render it side by side half, all I see is side by side half while wearing the glasses. When I import my video into Vegas 12, I choose side by side half, click on both video files and choose pair for 3D. Then I render it out to avc or mpeg 2 I think, but I'm still seeing two separate images on the screen with no 3D. Very confusing. Thank you for your research and help, all of you. If you can think of anything else, please hook me up. Thanks in advance.

Oh, all I really want to do is render my 3D video after it's edited in Vegas 12 and send it to an external thumb drive or hard drive. Don't have a blue ray burner. Going to Disney in May and want to get some awesome video in 3D, and then be able to play on my Vizio via a thumb drive or external hard drive. Thanks again.

I just got into my menu for 3D settings and it has 2D, SBS, TB and 3D sensio. Confused even more now. Hehe. Ima try again tomorrow. Will let you know what happens

News flash!!! I did burn it to a DVD at 720x480 and changed my TV to SBS and it worked. Can't figure out why it won't do it to a external usb drive or a thumb drive, but I'll keep plugging. Burning it to a DVD seemed to fix the problem for now. Any suggestions for a HD Blue Ray Player? Thanks in advance.

I am in the same boat as you are. Totally new to 3D editing. The manual is confusing to me. After months I found my error. Once you have set up Pro 12 for 3d, and you have placed a clip on your timeline, left click on your clip. When it is selected, a yellow box will form around it. Right click and choose properties. On the second tab you will find a 3D tab that needs to be enabled. This is what finally did it for me. It seems I could not get to this tab any other way. I can burn real 3D blu-ray's now.

Good luck and keep us posted. We are at the same place re burning 3D blu-ray. If you would like to exchange info off list you can contact me. I am not sure if this is permitted in this forums, but if it is, you can email me at mraroid at gee mail dot com.

All the best and good luck,

mraroid

Okay, thanks. I'll try that, too.

Finally had some success. Rendered a 3d file out to avc, sent it to DVD Architect and burned a successful blue ray disc. That is, after I found out you have to tell dvda to do blue ray. Found that out on here. So nice to have experienced techs on here tonhelp dummies like me along the way. Thanks to all.
