working with images

I am putting photos on the timeline with music and would like to know how to change the length of inserted stills to fit the music. Some images for some reason appear for, let's say 3 sec, where most appear for 5 sec which is what i want for most. It would be great to make an image appear at an important juncture of the music too.

thanks!

Rick

Some techniques I used successfully:
1) go to 'preferences' in Vegas, there you can set the standard length of a still, and a standard overlap time
2) go to the edge of a still image event and drag it right or left to make it longer or shorter
3) put music on your timeline; hold SHIFT and select all your still images on the time line, Group them. Then hold CTRL and drag the grouped stills to make them longer, until they end together with the music
4) Group the stills on the timeline, right click and apply the 'reduce interlace flicker' switch
5) to synchronise stills to music beat/climax: preview your movie and hit the m-key on the beats/climax. This will create markers on the timeline. Next, make still longer by dragging them to the markers.

There is a beginner's tutorial here: http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/video/video.asp?file=training/Vegas_10_StillImages&title=Training+%2D+Vegas+%2D+Still+Images&VideoPref=fastrm

thank you very much for the suggestions and especially for the tutorial. I am short on time to complete a project and this really helps.
