Working with MTS Files

I purchased a Canon HF200 last week and now have a bunch of MTS files on my hard drive. This clips are from a flag football game recorded using the Sports setting and 60i. What do I want to do with these files?

Ultimately, I use the clips to create a highlight DVD but that is at the end of the season. Now, I want to edit and convert to FLV for my website. What I tried to is:

- Edit clip and convert to AVI
- Run the AVI clip through Virtual Dub using Deshaker
- Convert the new AVI to FLV using RIVA encoder

By the time the files gets to the FLV, the quality is terrible. I think that the interlacing may be part of the issue (I think I'll record next week's game at 30p). Also, I'm not sure what kind of AVI to export to. (Perhaps mpeg 2 may be better). When doing this in SD, my final FLV was 640 x 480.

Does anyone have any suggestions for this workflow?

Also, thinking of my final project, I tried setting up proxy files to use however, Super does not recognize the .MTS extension. My computer is underpowered to edit the MTS directly. (Dual Core, 1.66GHz, 1 GB RAM). I don't mind the slow rendering/processing times. I was able to speed up the editing/preview a little using tips from Eugenia's website.

1. Edit the clips in the Vegas timeline as you like, using the .m2ts files.
2. Export to Deshake in AVI as per the Platinum tutorial here: http://eugenia.gnomefiles.org/2009/08/02/footage-stabilization-with-vegas/
3. Bring back the deshaked AVI to Vegas as a new project, and you use the new method here: http://eugenia.gnomefiles.org/2007/09/12/from-dvhdvavchd-to-flash-video/ (select the Sony AVC exporting way)

That's it. You don't need FLV, which is the old way of doing Flash video. All you need is a streamable MP4 file and a player that can play the new kinds of Flash videos. All you need to know is in the links above.

Thanks. Steps 1 & 2 working really well. Just need an updated computer to speed up the rendering times. I'll try step 3 tomorrow. Also, thanks for the advice on using MP4 instead of FLV. I visited the JW website and will work toward updating my website with this player.
