Working with VOB Chapters....Sony Camera

chip51maker wrote on 12/2/2010, 8:47 PM
Thru out the year take pics and video of family activities. This time of the year I assemble my years work into a DVD that I present to my family for Christmas.....its quite a hit......been doing it for 5 years now.

The first year I made my DVD with microsoft movie maker....not bad but there is better.

After the 2nd year I started using Vegas Movie Studio.

Here is where I am asking for help.....this year I want to add video to my DVD. When I look at the mini DVD from the Sony Camera I see a Title then subdivided into many chapters. I want to bring each chapter into my DVD project, edit it then add the edited video to the timeline. The problem so far is that I cannot seem to be able to separate the files so that I can work with each chapter.

Can anyone explain to me how to get started?

Thanks

Put the file on the timeline. Place the cursor at a chapter point where you want to make a cut. Press the S key on the keyboard to split. Repeat until all the pieces are separated.

Alternatively you can load the file into the trimmer. From there you can highlight each section you want to use and drag it to the timeline.

Thanks for helping me. I did just as instructed and I can see how it works. It seems that my situation is peculiar in that the file looks like a "Page" and on that page there are 6 "Chapters". When play is activated all 6 of the "Chapters" play at the same time......as viewed within each of the windows on the "Page".

It appears that every time I started and stopped the camera a new "Chapter" was created.

I hope this makes sense.....if not and you are still willing to help me I will try another way to describe what's going on

That sounds to me like you imported the scene selection menu rather than the videos. Usually the first or second .VOB file on the disc is the scene selection menu. Look for a group of larger .VOB files that probably have similar names except for _0, _1, _2, _3, etc. at the end. These will most likely be the video clips.

I suspect you may really be working in DVD Architect and not Vegas Movie Studio? If so:

You need to import your media using the menu pane on the left, which will put them on the media timeline.

Dragging files to the top level timeline in Architect actually puts them in the menu. HTH

Tonight I will have time to work on my DVD once again......thanks for the tips and responses......I will certainly let you know what happens.

I am using Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 10.0....just bought it.

In the years past I have used Vegas Movie Studio 6.0 and I tried to use DVD Architect Studio 3.0....but really never understood how it works.

I only do this just before Christmas every year. I make a DVD of work stuff that we play at our Christmas party (a real hit) and then one for my family......my family really looks forward to the DVD after Christmas Supper.

Again Thanks

Still having problems separating the chapters from the DVD recorded in my Sony Camcorder

But I will keep trying. I purchased the Vegas software at office depot......was told that it would do everything that I need......my fear is that I still need other software.....sure hope not.

Let's start at the beginning..... How are you getting the video off of your miniDVD into the PC?

Are you using the VMS Project > Import Camcorder DVD Disc... feature?

MSmart......starting at the beginning works VERY WELL for me....

I don't know or did not know that there was a special proceedure to get the files off of the miniDVD disc. So far I simply moved them from the Disc to a directory in Explorer then tried (unsuccessfully) to impor them into my Sony Vegas Project.

I will be working on my project tonight....

As MSmart mentioned, use the Import Camcorder Disc function. It was designed for that purpose.

WEEEEOOOOOO! ! !

I used the "Import DVD Camcorder Disc" function from the "File" menu..........now we are getting somewhere.....Thanks MSmart for pointing me in the right direction....

I am sure that I will need more help as I continue to try to become proficient with this software.

I am new here, you guys don't know me but have been very generous with your help and suggestions.....I thank you and in time I will be more of an asset to this site

Again Thanks
