WOT: Laser Photo Case Inserts

RalphM wrote on 4/2/2010, 11:37 AM
Some time ago I gave up on inkjet printers and bought a very low end color laser printer (Samsung CLP-315). It has generally done an acceptable job on text and graphics.

I have a small run of DVDs for which I want to use a photo image on the insert. Has anyone had experience with laser printer photo quality insert sheets. If so, any brand recommendations?

Thanks,
RalphM

Use "Color Copy" quality paper, print from a template, and trim your own.
Done hundreds of them this way with my old HP color laserjet, and people love 'em.

My favorites are "HP Color Laser Brochure Paper, Glossy" and "HP Laser Photo Paper 200g Matte."

The first is the traditional paper weight for inserts, the second is a heavy matter cover stock that holds up very well for heavy duty use.

I buy those on eBay, for a lot less than retail.

For lighter use, "Hammermill Ultra Premium Color Laser" is a matte 24 lb. ultrawhite bond paper that prints stunning color. This one is available in Staples stores for $39.95 per box of 5 x 500-sheet reams, or $9.95 for one ream.

Thanks for the pointers. I'll try some of these suggestions. I may find that my printer is a little too low end, but we'll see.

Thanks,

My wife has a Friskars (spelling?) paper cutter that you can change cutting wheels.
Perforated is an option.

Buy A4 size or have them trim for you. I scanned an insert using a flatbed scanner.
Then in GIMP (or your favorite paint program) you can make a template with cutting
targets. On a layer you can place a rectangle the correct size cut down. Don't
forget to print slightly larger (bleed) so you don't have a white band around the
sheet after cutting.

I have had problems with heat and age causing the image to come off on the
case's clear plastic. However, they do look nice new.

If the fuser temperature is right for the paper weight (set in printer properties), this should not be a problem.
