WOT: LipDub - the new word for viral

First of all, this video has nothing to do with Vegas.
I came across it last night and was very impressed at what was done in a very short period of time.
The fact that it was done by students at a Canadian university (yeah Canada!!!) has nothing to do with it whatsoever :)

From the FAQ page:

What is a LipDub, you ask?
Well let me tell you.
* A LipDub is a style of YouTube video that has a tendency of going viral.
* A large group of students and community members rocking out to awesome songs for a day.
* An epic video filmed in a single tracking shot...dun dun dun.

Be sure to watch the end of the video for several "making of" shots.
BTW, YouTube is full of clips about this video.
Enjoy.

If ever the world needed evidence that things are gonna be just fine just take a look at this video. The future looks bright. Be sure to bump it up to HD.

Brilliant, both in conception and execution.

That school is going to have to beat new applicants away with a stick. Brilliant marketing (and a cool vid)!

Now that's what I call 10 minutes of pure fun entertainment.

Well Done!!

My sons school did a similar thing but these kids are only 6-11 years old!

I have no idea what was used to shoot and edit it. I didn't even know it was happening!

The UBC LipDub is quite spectacular indeed, but it does violate the key LipDub principle of being a single take with no cuts.

LipDubs originated in US High Schools a few years ago. There are many of them on YouTube; all the ones I've seen are in fact a single take. One of the most fascinating ones is shot in reverse (sorry, I can't remember the school that did it.) Being shot in reverse (well actually it is played in reverse) made it impossible to lip-synch the lyrics but that didn't stop them from making a great video.

I read on Wiki that Jake Lodwick, the founder of Vimeo came up with the term in December of 2006 after making a video entitled Lip Dubbing: Endless Dream

To me (at just one watching, admittedly) it looks like it was all one single shot up to just under then ten-minute mark, at which point I guess it went into "technical violation" of the genre rules.
Anyone discern any edits/cuts BEFORE about 9minutes30seconds?

Could easily have been cut @ 6:48 - goes to black in back of truck; which subsequently raises question whether a video of video playback falls strictly under the 'rules'!
Then there's a dissolve @ 7:12......
And superman leap into Helicopter @ 7:20......

I think it's a fantastic clip none-the-less; amazing effort!

Kinda funny, a friend of mine and I did one spontaneously three years ago on the plane en route to NAB. A couple years later out of nowhere it started getting a bunch of hits, turned out that quite a few articles had appeared showing ours as an example of copyright infringement in a lawsuit between EMI and Vimeo. You can read about it and see the vid here:

Vimeo sued; have staffers uploaded infringing content?

Just cuz I'm lazy I'll copy paste my humble little opinion that I wrote on the Vimeo forums when someone had posted a link to one of the articles:

"It's kind of a drag that something that was just done spontaneously for fun gets twisted up into something its not. For me seeing a Lipdub or something like it often reminds me or turns me onto a song and I switch over to iTunes and buy it. One of those "Wow, I can't believe I don't have that song on my iPod yet" moments. Who set's up a playlist in Vimeo to listen to music? No one. There are so many better options on the web with so many music sites, streaming stations, not to mention radio, tv, and peoples own CD and mp3 collections its ridiculous to imagine that people are trying to hear their favorite songs for free here or on YouTube. There are a number of sites set up to do just that, find and listen to songs or embed them into your site or MySpace page. Just makes no sense to me.

Anyway, just a drag no matter how ya slice it. I do hope that ours has gotten a few people to buy Elton John's Rocketman on iTunes or elsewhere cuz its a great frikkin song."
