WOT Serial Number safety

Tip for friends. A close friend of mine recently got burgled. She has had a hard time with the police because she could not present serial numbers for all of the items missing. Record the serial numbers of anything valuable (small electronics, TV, Ipads, etc) and file them somewhere safe like a safe deposit box, a friend's house, etc. Do not just leave them on a computer cause if that computer is stolen, it won't help.

Yes, my friend recovered his stolen tuba when he identified the serial # at a local pawn shop.

Yes, that is a great tip but I suspect most people do not record any serial number for anything. For instance, I have hundreds of things that I should be recording serial numbers for, but it is a daunting task. Those items come and go so it is a constant effort to keep that database of hundreds of serial numbers up to date. Consequently it doesn't get done.

She found her stuff for sale on FB and tracked down the thief, but the police still would not take action until she gave them serial numbers. Her ipad even was locked with her name, but she had to present a serial number. It is a pain to do, but is very important.
