would like to freeze video at start of each chpter

I've done a search here, and I've found several links describing how to freeze the last frame of a video, but I still don't quite understand.

I'm making a video collage of several clips of family holidays over the years, and I'd like to try something and see how it looks.

Basically, at least at the start, and possibly at the start of each separate date, I'd like to (a) freeze the first frame of the video for some period of time, and (b) have it be black and white, possibly writing a date or such on the video, and then (c) have the movie pick up from that frame, normal speed and color.

I've used audio envelopes, but I don't quite get the video velocity, how to freeze a single frame and make that freeze last a while. Would it be best to cut that one frame out and make a long event having just the one frame?

Thanks!

Ok, I think I got that part working. It occurred to me to put a split at the frame, then drag the left section (the freeze frame) some number of seconds to the right.

That works, but is that the "best" way?

Also, is there a way to set the right end to a specific time point, rather than dragging it and watching the counter?

Finally, if any of you have done this, what do you typically do about the related audio during the freeze? Just leave it silent, or let the audio play on (but that seems weird, when the movie resumes)?

Here's a great discussion of all the various methods of doing a freeze frame..what you want to do is very doable. The audio is up to you. Be creative. Time well spent to experiment with various methods and ideas.
