Would this work?

Since Vegas Video doesn't burn or create chapters, would this work?

1. Capture the video using Vegas Video, edit it, title it, edit the sound then save it (as a .avi) file.

2. Import that .avi file into say Ulead DVD workshop or comparable entry level authoring software. Create the chapter points then save it again as a .avi file.

3. Bring it back into Vegas Video and encode it to mpg2 and save it (the reason I would like to encode it in Vegas Video instead of Ulead Workshop is because I understand the new MainConcept encoder in Vegas Video is very good).

4. Bring the encoded .mpg2 file back into Ulead Workshop and burn it. Would this work. I really appreciate your time. Thanks.

Why would you want to do that? The authoring software has chapter point authoring built in. I encode to MPEG in Vegas, then ship to my authoring software and stay there. Titles, pre-rolls, everything is created in Vegas, encoded to mpeg, and then used in DVD workshop or Impressions to create the DVD. Chapter points, hot links, menus, etc are all created in the authoring app.

Once you create the chapter points, menu's, doesn't the authoring application have to re-encode or re-render the file again to mpeg in order to get the chapter points and menu's into mpeg format? If it doesn't, that's great because I understand the more times you encode or re-render the file, you lose quality. Sorry if I'm a pain, I just don't quite understand this part about bringing already encoded mpeg's into authoring applications, adding chapters and menu's and not have the authoring app encode again.

No the authoring application doesn't have to re-render after the chapter points are added. It creates a seperate file (not an MPEG file) for that.

DVDs don't have MPEG files as such in them . The MPEG files are made into .VOB files & you have .BUP files & .IFO files that contain chapter point information etc.

No. The authoring app does NOT have to reencode, it just see's time points to insert chapters. At least impression and DVD workshop work that way.
You aren't a pain, that's what these forums are for.
You are right, NEVER rerender a compressed file. Once it's compressed, it's done. Which is why archiving to MPEG on DVD is not a good idea. Keep a master AVI until you are sure you are finished working with the files.

Thanks to everybody for your help. I bought it! Will play with the final mpg2 in either Dazzle DVD complete or Ulead Video Studio 6 since I already have these unless someone knows of problems with either one of these. I can't see buying more software if I don't have to. Thanks again.
