WOW! - Just discovered Multiple Buses! . . . and Creative Question?

Grazie wrote on 10/3/2003, 2:30 AM
Yeah, yeah, yeah . . . .I know I should know this but this is something that has really "saved" my bottom with the present project . . phew . .

1 - I've ended up with: Interviews, sound effects, background music and spent the last 2 days figuring how to "balance" this lot.

2 - Assigened Audio Busses to each and every audio track in question. I can now SEE those areas that are going "hot" = Red and shot the film and make adjustments to the Volume Env.

3 - Have used the same to then get some astonishing Pan options, for THAT track. I've been able to have the "truck's" engine move from left to right as the truck moves on screen . . amazing - this with the Interview track staying where it should.

4 - Observed the Master bus go into the Red and identify the "culprit", and amke the necessary adjustments - kooooolllll!

Why have I just done this? - Because I needed too. Had I read the Manual? Yes . . I was just too scared to put what I'd read into practice.

QUETION: When I assign an envelope to an audio track, the option comes up as to which Bus I want to send it to. Why would I want to do this? Why would I want to assigne it it to anything other than ita own Bus I created for it? This "sounds" like a good idea but I'm presently at a loss as to how, what or where I would benefit. I'm sure this is of value. Please tell me - truly . . I want to know . . .

Regards,

Grazie

I'll try and break it down a bit ..

Buses are independent of tracks.

You may create a bus which has a collection, or chain of FX - maybe a little compression, reverb etc, suited to, say, male voices.
Create a Bus called male voice. Apply the FX to this bus.

ANY tracks containing male voices can be assigned to that same bus.

The amount of any particular track's audio that you send to that bus can be controlled with the envelope.

You may have up to around 25 buses. Each has it's own mixture of effects.

Any track can be sent to any bus.

Ho! And I thought Xmas was 3 months away! - Pete THAT is teriffic. I know somebody is gonna come back at me and say "Grazie RTFM", they are true, but having you "spell" it out has been valuable - love this Forum . . . . and its people . .. ;-)

Peter thank you - I've found over the months you and I can get a lot of "business" done in the earlier hours, prior to when the "Sleeping Bear" awakens - yeah? Know what I mean?

I love the simple explanation you made,"ANY tracks containing male voices can be assigned to that same bus." Now THAT I understand. Crystal has never been clearer . .

Peter's post is very good, but I just wanted to go over one thing you mentioned in your post Grazie. You say you set up a buss for each and every track. This is unnecessary. You already know that you can set and automate volume, pan, etc for each audio track. The purpose of busses is to then group similar types of track together for additional consistent processing.

Peter's example is good. Another one (more traditionally from the music side) would be where you have several microphones recording the various drums in a drum kit. Each drum has its own track, and has its relative volume, compression and pan set. What happens if you now want to increase/decrease the volume of the drums relative to the guitarist? Do you go back to each drum track and change each volume level separately? Nightmare... The answer is to assign all the drum tracks to one buss, and then use that buss to change the overall volume.

My point is, use busses to group similar tracks together. There's no point in having one for each track.

Have fun,

Mark

“Dear Mr William Boy,

Pertaining to your post of the 3rd of October 2003 and in response to that aforesaid item, it has been brought to our attention that for some reason, unbeknown to ourselves that you endeavour that our patient, a one Mr "Grazie", should forthwith and without any hesitance, desist from his continued and persistence in his lack and deficiency of exhibiting and demonstrating any outward signs or enthusiasm or passion. Let me tell you, we have been dealing with this gentleman for not a short period of time, with regard to that which you elude.

To remedy this poor soul’s predicament we have attempted, and on not a few occasions tried the following:-

1 – Arranged for him to attend Clown School

2 – Have granted him with riches beyond his wildest dreams – well ours anyway

3 – Made him President of no less than 10 of the World’s leading film studios

4 – Provided him with free access to Mr Spybirg’s own personal editing studio and have been able to arrange 24:7 total personal film editing tuition from that fine man

The list goes on.

But, all to no avail. His continued lack of interest in anything filmic defies our best attempts to raise anything but a disinterested yawn. This is sometimes followed by a grunt, which apart from being very impolite and, quite frankly, is thoroughly objectionable, is making my team take on a similar countenance. After everything we have tried we are at our whit’s end – let me tell you! This maybe unprofessional of us to say this in public, but we speak as we find.

A more uninterested, apathetic and indifferent individual we challenge you to find. If you do stumble across such a person, my only and honest advice is to run like hell in the opposite direction. He has affected all of us in such unpleasant and negative ways that most of us, those that admit to it, are not only on severe medical, and I do mean medicine here, and 24 hour emotional support, I’ve had to recently release several of our professors and consultants for their chosen and preferred method of therapy and hoped for recuperation. Of course, this has been followed by the usual marriage breakdowns and divorces. And, as they say, the only people that are benefiting from this, financially that is, are our colleagues in the legal profession. However, I’ve subsequently been made aware that several of the aforesaid legal eagles have too, after hearing about this gentleman’s apathetic affliction, are themselves starting to exhibit the same symptoms, resulting in them taking an undisclosed amount of unpaid leave to recuperate. Unheard of in that sector.

Mr Boy, please be assured that we will attempt all that we can to improve Mr “Grazie”s present “sad” condition. But I have to tell you it is not looking promising.

Only today I noticed my own particular demeanour is starting to resemble that of the patient in question. I can imagine it is only a matter of time before I too succumb. To be quite honest, it has been all that I can do to muster up enough interest and will power to write these few lines.

Please, if you are a God fearing person, I implore and beg that you include me, and that of my Staff’s sanity in your prayers tonight.

Yours, sought of sincerely but-I-really-can’t-think-of-what-to-write-here . . . .

bb – give me an inch etc etc . . anyways, I thought a bit of “light” relief was in order after the angst being posted here of late . . . . .

. . . thanks for the bait . .

Now where did I put that guide on Irony?

Grazie

Good one Grazie..........

I am saving it my collection of good posts, funny the rest are about bitrates and stuff.

The good thing about an audio bus is it is low overheaf compared to a track level event i.e. the noise reduction plug is best used as an audio bus.

Ttake a look at the start of the Vegas manual and the graphics for audio and video chains and the order they are processed, stick them on the wall as a prompter - no joke it helps think things through.

BB - your gonna have to explain that TLA to me, RTFM expanded i think but fill in some of the gaps.

Hang Man anyone?
