Wrong frame rate in DVDA timeline (30fps versus 29.970)

I have authored a 2 hour 13 minute mpeg2 video in Vegas and the video I have set to be NTSC with 29.970 frame rate. It rendered out just fine to be 02:12:58:08 long to be exact. When I select the video in Vegas' explorer it shows the exact length I just wrote above 2:12:58:08 in the status bar in the explrorer window. If I right click the file to look up the properties I get the same results including the 29.970 frame rate.

When I load this video into DVDA2 the length of the video in the timeline window is 2:12:50:09 which seems like that DVDA2 shows the timeline as if the video file was 30fps not 29.970. Also, in the DVDA2's explorer window it shows the file to be 2:12:50:09 long but with 29.970fps. If I right click the file to pull up the properties I get the correct length (2:12:58.270) with the 29.970 interlace in DVDA2 just as I did in Vegas.

It seems like the timeline puts the video out as a 30fps video and recalculates the length based on total number of frames. It is a big problem for me, because I forgot to export my markers, so now I need to add them back in manually, but they don't line up with the marker locations in Vegas. They start to be skewed by a couple of seconds due to the 29.970 vs. 30 fps difference. The longer the movie the more obvious this difference.

Can anyone tell me what I could do the get the proper time coding displayed in DVDA2? This is really annoying!

I think the authored DVD will be 29.970fps so it will end up being the same length as the original render from Vegas, but in the meantime DVDa@'s timeline keeps telling otherwise.

Any info would be appreciated!

Thanks!

D'oh! (Smacks forehead) The same thing happened to me with DVDA1 on a 2.5 hour project, but I wasn't clever enough to figure out the 29.970 vs 30 fps thing. I finally gave up and re-rendered the mpg file.

Glad you spotted this. Maybe it can be fixed.

DVDA is displaying time in SMPTE Non-Drop (29.97 fps, Video), so you have two options:

First,
1. In Vegas, File | Properties...
2. Click on the tab for the ruler page
3. Set "Ruler time format" to "SMPTE Non-Drop (29.97 fps, Video)"
Time in Vegas will now match time in DVDA.

Or second,
1. In Vegas, drag rendered file from Explorer window to Trimmer window and drop
2. In the Trimmer window, edit Markers as desired
3. In the Trimmer window's toolbar, click the save markers and regions button
4. In DVDA, load project
5. In Project Overview window, double-click video
6. In Timeline window's toolbar, click the load markers button

Both of your answers seem to solve my issue. The first one for long term and the second one for now!

I only had 23 chapter points and they weren't frame critical so I just eyeballed them and re-added in DVDA2 last night (I really wanted to get the DVD done) but I will keep the above tip at hands' reach for next time!

One minor question:
The footage actually showed up being shorter in DVDA than in Vegas or in the properties. So that is what made me think that DVDA actually uses 30fps instead of 29.970. It just makes sense that the higher the frame rate the shorter the movie will be, and 30fps is higher than 29.970.

Thanks again!
