XENA LSE - Pro8 - but still no preview

Otto-DK wrote on 10/26/2007, 2:18 AM
I have a Xena LSe card and I have just installed the new Vegas Pro8.
I still can't get a preview on my external monitor through the Xena Card.

My setup:
IBM Intellistation with 2 dualcore Intel4, 4G ram and sata Raid discs.
Xena LSe with driver 3.01

Problem:
when i choose the Aja Xena card in preferences/video preview device, Vegas keep telling me, that the "device is unavailable".
But at the same time Xena works perfectly on AfterFX on the same computer, and gives me a beatiful preview on the external TV monitor...

I have tried installing Vegas first, then the Xena driver.
Then I uninstalled everything and started with installing the Xena driver first - then vegas.
Device is still unavailable.

Sony claimed, that Pro8 would support the Xena-card, but it doesn't seem that way on my computer...

- any suggestions?

I can't get Vegas 8 to even recognize my Xena LH card. It doesn't appear in the preview devices drop down and it doesn't appear in the capture tool's device drop down. Yet, if I install Vegas on a computer that DOESN'T have an Aja card, I have the option in those drop downs to select an Aja device.

I've been "discussing" this with tech support for almost 2 months and getting no where at all. I get the impression the tech support guy has no experience at all with an Aja board.

The Xena card works fine with Premiere Pro and the Machina software that comes with it, so I know it isn't a hardware problem.

I've tried uninstalling all software that uses the Xena card except Vegas.

Has anyone had these problems?

Is anyone using the Xena card at all with Vegas?

Otto-DK, the tech support guy says the xena card will only work with HD-SDI for previews. Is that how you are connecting your external monitor?

At least you can get the software to offer you the choice to select the card...

Otto, did you solve your problem?

I moved my Xena card to another computer and tried to get it to work with Vegas there as well. No luck (but other programs can use it just fine). Vegas still will not offer Aja as an option in the Preview or Capture device dropdowns if there is an Aja card in the machine.

I'm beginning to believe that Aja support is a myth :)

I have the AJA Zena LSe. It worked for preview just fine (never actually digitized with it) when using Vegas 7. But when I upgraded to 8.0, it shows up in the dropdown box for available devices, but then after you select it, it says "Device unavailable". Very odd that it worked in 7 but not 8. Perhaps I missed some note during installation of 8 or something. I have looked at the device manager for XP Pro (SP2) and it says that it is functioning properly. And, again, when I launch Vegas 7, the AJA works for preview just fine, apparently.

I'm still using a Canopus ADVC-100 for now for both digitizing and preview. Perhaps Sony PCH can comment or offer some suggestions?

Support for the AJA Xena cards in Vegas 8 was developed with version 2.6 of the Xena drivers (hardware driver version 6.3). They are still available here:

Archived Software Driver Downloads (LHe)

or

Archived Software Driver Downloads (LSe)

You may want to give version 2.6 a try.

We are currently investigating support for the latest version of the drivers. So far, we have had no problems with Vegas Pro 8.0a and the latest Xena drivers (hardware driver version 6.4).

Well, I had 6.4 installed and uninstalled it, and then installed the 6.3 (using the v2.6 installer), but still no luck. Hmm. Will spend more time looking in the next few days perhaps. Oddly it still works in Vegas 7. I'll stick with the Canopus for now. Thanks for the advice, tho!.

We just tested an LHe Xena on XP and Vista using the latest Aja drivers. Preview works fine.

Your system might have a .Net configuration problem. To quickly check this, in Vegas, go to tools> scripting>batch render. Does the batch render dialog come up as it should? If it does not, please re-install .Net, and try this again.

.Net needs to be properly installed for Vegas Pro 8 to work correctly- it is not an optional component. Once properly installed any of the supported Xena boards should work.

I had .NET 1.1, 2.0 and 3.0 installed when I checked with XP's "add or remove programs". I ran the script for Batch Rendering with no apparent problem. I the, just to be sure, uninstalled all 3 .NET framework applications, and downloaded the latest and greatest from MSFT and reinstalled 3.0 (which also seemed to install 2.0) and still no AJA

Another interesting tidbit: in Vegas 7, the available devices in the pulldown menu for Preview Devices was:
None
AJA Video Device
Blackmagic Design DeckLink
OHCI Complian IEEE 1394/DV
Windows Secondary Display

in Vegas 8 now, as before, the available devices are:
AJA Video Device
OHCI Complian IEEE 1394/DV
Windows Secondary Display

The Blackmagic entry has disappeared, and altho I can select the AJA, it still says "Device unavailable" in the Details box directly below the pulldown menu in the Preferences/Preview Device tab.

Next, I will search for and install all WIndows XP Pro updates, I guess.

The list of hardware you see in Vegas 8 is expected. DeckLink, Intensity, and Multibridge hardware support is now handled by Blackmagic Design and it is installed by the new DeckLink drivers. The default preview device is now Windows Secondary Display so we were able to get rid of the "None" entry.

Are you able to use Windows Secondary Display? Does its property page appear in the Video Preview Device settings tab when it is selected?

Are you running XP 64-bit?
JMacSTL wrote on 12/14/2007, 9:39 AM
I am running XP Pro SP2 32bit; we did not purchase the 64bit version.

I am able to use Windows 2ndary display, and yes it shows its properties when I select it in the Preview Device tab, and ineed it works as it should, making the 2nd monitor full screen video when video it clicked in the preview window.

i have reinstalled .NET and gotten just about all MSFT recommended upgrades Could my ATI software be causing some sort of conflict with Vegas 8 and the AJA Preview, but not Vegas 7?

Could the AJA Machine software be causing a conflict in 8 but not 7?

Is Machina (or any other software that uses the AJA card) running at the same time as Vegas?
JMacSTL wrote on 12/14/2007, 3:06 PM
Not that I"m aware, no. I have a jpg file of the processes running. i've posted it at:

http://www.macmorran.net/vegas/

I will sit and check each of these entries to see if one of them might be the culprit..but again, it works find in Vegas 7.

Thanks for your continued help. I really do appreciate it.

I'm getting ready to build a V ista64bit system, Aja just released drivers supporting it, will Vegas 8 pro work in this setup? (64bit Vista).
BTW, I'll be building around the Intel BOXDX38BT , has 2 PCIe16v2 slots and 1 pcie 16 wired as PCIe4. Hoping this is a stable system.

Update, I'm now looking at dual quad core xeons (harpertown) with a SuperMicro X7DWA-N mobo.

Well I"ve completely removed all drivers and software for the AJA LSe card, and then installed the lastest-and-greatest XENA_setup-3.1.0-x86.exe, but still "device unavailable" when I choose the AJA Video Device in the pulldown window of the Preview Device tab in Prefs. I've also installed .NET 3.0 and tried killing the following two processes which were running: NMBgMonitor.EXE (NERO's driver) and RTHDCPL.exe (Realtek's audio driver).

The AJA LSe works fine with Vegas 7 still, but not with 8. Any other words of advice for me to try and get this working for me?

thx.

Hoping to revisit this issue, which I still have not been able to rectify: Since my last post I have updated Vegas to 8.0c Build 217. Still no working AJA LSe, altho it's available in the pull down list, it still says "not available.". .NET seems to be working, as scripting works just fine.

I wonder if it matters in which expansion slot the XENA LSe device is installed. AJA's website details different slots for their HD cards, but not for the LSe card.

Wondering if there have been any subsequent testing of the LSe device with Vegas 8?

Thanks.
