XML Imports and MacIntosh

Crellin Sound wrote on 2/16/2012, 9:00 AM
Howdy,

There's a rumor about that XML files exported from a Mac can be imported into some editing systems. As long as the recipient has the proper media in the same file structure as the sender, the XML file is supposed to arrange the media on the recipient's system.

Does anyone know if this will work with Vegas? Any instructions?

Thanks,

BT

Here's a little bit more information. So far, I haven't been able to figure out how to use it in Vegas.

"You can have your co-workers create the ProRes files on their Mac, and then you can use the same files on a PC (as long as QuickTime is installed). You won't be able to output to ProRes, however, you can exchange XML files which will be readable on both systems."

Thanks,

On what "system"?

Just because XML is readable on every computer out there doesn't mean that a computer has software installed on it that knows what to do with that XML file.

Hi There,

Thanks for answering. This is a bit of a tough question and I need some help.

The system from which the XML file will come is Mac and the editing program is Final Cut Pro.

My system, which will receive the XML file, is a Viao. Right now, I'm running Vegas Movie Platinum 11.0

We're in far different locations, but we both have identical media in identical file structures.

We need some way for me to see what the editors are doing on Final Cut. If having them send me XML files every once in a while will allow me to see what they're doing, that would be great.

But I'm a bit confused about all this. If you could shed some light on my conundrum, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks,

BT

So is an EDL/Edit Decision list what you are looking for? Some NLEs can easily export these. Final Cut Pro is supported .

Hi There,

Yes, an EDL is what I'm looking for.

From what I understand, an XML file is an advanced EDL. Is that correct?

I have the XML file that was exported from Final Cut. How do I or can I import it into Vegas Movie HD Platinum 11.0?

I hope this works.

Thanks,

BT

Unfortunately, VMS doesn't support XML/EDL import or export.

Too bad!

Does Vegas Pro support it?

Thanks,

XML is a "standard" format, but the meaning of the XML tags can be SW-proprietary.
So, or it does exist a common tagging scheme between those NLEs, or I hardly doubt files can be exchanged.
Just for the record, a couple of weeks I just tried to export/import from Adobe Framemaker to MS Word using the XML and there was no way to do it, because the 2 SW uses their own proprietary XML tagging scheme.
I guess the same can be valid for NLEs....

Right. Keep in mind that XML isn't really so much of a file format as it is an idea for how to stuff various differing data into a "sharable" structure. An XML file can contain an EDL, or a word processor document, or a scan of an airline baggage tag, or an image, or a database table, or ... well ... anything. But, just because you can save a word processor document in XML doesn't mean that an XML capable photo editing program can use the word processor data.

It's sorta like how English, French, Latin, Italian, Spanish, etc. all use Roman letters. You can type any of the languages all on the same typewriter. But writing your diary out in French using Roman letters doesn't mean that an Italian person can understand it. They can tell what letters you used because they can recognize and read them, but the words don't mean anything.
