It's nothing to do with the xp operating system, but with throughput.

That's the ticket. You may get by fine editing SD on a fast wireless network, as I sometimes do. But there is even a tradeoff there.

Does your laptop have wireless N? If not then upgrading the router won't make any difference.

How far are you from the router? I have N here, but i max out at about 60Mbps when i'm 3 feet from the router. If i move to the living room 15 feet away my speed drops to about 8Mbps. Maybe you should consider using an ethernet cable during editing sessions.

Windows file sharing is slow. I have two boxes wired to a switch at 100Mbps, but file transfers typically only move at about 40Mbps even when both computers are otherwise idle. Any other CPU or disc activity on either machine makes those speeds drop markedly. On the other hand, i've got an old P-III-esque box running Linux & Samba (both free, by the way) and it transfers files as fast as the network can bear even when bogged down with hundreds of other tasks.

the best bet would be gigabit wired connections. If you have the $$ for that.... ;)

I've used FTP servers/clients & that seems to work pretty good. I've never liked windows file sharing, it's always given me some issue or another.

Is it possible to hook 1 drive up to two computers at once via firewire/usb?
