XP freeze when rendering file as Mpeg-2

I was trying to render out a 2:00 minute section of a bigger project, selected in/out and then highlighted the region, save as "name" and mpeg-2. Hit save and everything starts out fine, but then my HD pulses abount once a second. No frames or progress appears on progress bars. CPU activitry is 0%. I then have to Ctr/Alt/Del to get out.

I am running win-xp, sp-1 with the fix, I can render in .avi without a problem. Never tried to render in Mpeg before, has worked fine up till this point.

Any thoughts.
Phil

Win xp sp1 with patch
512Ram, AMD 1600 in a Compaq case
DME 80gb & 100gb HD
Regular NTSC DV to Mpeg-2
Starts render, then freezes. No problem rendering to DV/AVI

I, also, was having intermittent crashes during MPEG-2 rendering on my P4 2.2G Asus P4TE with 1G RDRAM.

I was overclocking the FSB to allow a processor speed of 2.53G and had Turbo RAM engaged for the RDRAM.

In normal use, no problems, but two hours into MPEG-2 rendering, I would get a hard reboot. I dropped back to the certified FSB rating and shut off Turbo RAM and now everything runs fine.

I have a full tower case with tons of fan-based cooling (8 fans or so). I suspect a good number of crashes, particularly those that happen after an hour or so of rendering on an otherwise normal machine, are due to processors/RAM being driven to hard or inadequate cooling.
