XP Tweaks & Fixes

I recently reformatted my hard drives and reloaded my OS and editing software. Although the "slowdown" that I had been experiencing probably could have been fixed by a more knowledgeable techy, the reformat was the easiest, fastest and safest way for me to choose.

Anyway...to my problem. Over the years, I have read about and instituted quite a few "tweaks & fixes" to XP and Vegas. Many have worked well, some had no noticeable effect, some were disasters that forced a rollback. Since these changes were made "a little at a time", my tired tired old brain can't remember what works and what doesn't. Is there a definitive or suggested list of "tweaks & fixes" that will optimize the performance of Vegas on Windows XP Professional.

Thanks.

As as amateur expert, let me also suggest that spyware and adware removal programs can help speed as well.

As long as we are discussing XP Tweaks - I have a question re the PreFetch folder and its effect on performance. According to info at the VideoGuys site thsi prefetcher function helps with OS and application loading. And by another site some one recommended not deleteting all these files on every start-up as some have recommended - but instead delete all prefetch files up to a few weeks back - this would supposedly help system performance.

Anyway in my case - I have done a recent system re-install and though I have folllowed some of the recommendations at the VideoGuys site - I don't specifically recall doing anything to the Prefetch routine - nor have I deleted any of the files. Yet as I look at the Prefetch files I do have I see no current ones -what I have is all dated for only the date of installation - nothing since - 2 weeks. Now I wouldn't really worry about this but someone wrote that system performance can be degraded if there are no recent prefetch files. I can't say for sure that my system is running strangely except it does seem that system start and application loading times are sluggish. Does any one know anything about this and what would I would do to get the prefetch files working again as they are supposed to - which I believe is to create some files each startup. Many thanks fultro
