xvid codec for MPEG 4 DDV 660

Sidecar wrote on 12/20/2004, 5:38 PM
I bought one of those tiny DDV-660 MPEG-4 cameras at the LA DV Expo. Records video to a 512mb SD card; no tape. I installed the XVID device driver from the included CD.

I can play the AVI clips it produces with Windows Media Player 10.

The clips will import to the Vegas 5 media folder but will not go to the time line.

The VASST guy at the DV Expo said Vegas can edit MPEG 4. That's why I bought the camera.

How do I get Vegas to recognize the XVID codec? I tried clicking the "recognize third party codecs" but Vegas still can't see the clips.

are you sure that camera uses XVID ?

also -- there are MANY types of mpeg 4 .... lots ...

i would un-install the xvid codec from your system completly .. and install FFDSHOW instead if it is xvid ..

why dont you use GSPOT and check an avi of that camera and see if it really is xvid (first)

I'm having a similar problem with an XVID that I downloaded. Even though it will end up as a "best" quality MPEG2, I'd still like to be able to work with it as a source.

Here's where I am, using Vegas 5.0b.

I unchecked the block in Options that says to ignore 3d party codecs.

I downloaded and installed FFDSHOW (no other xvid codecs), but that did not allow the XVID avi to be placed on the timeline. I can see it in the Vegas Explorer view, though.

I downloaded and installed a "stable" XVID codec binary, using the 1.02 codec. No change in behavior. The video plays fine in WMP 10, by the way.

I checked my xvid video with GSPOT, and see no evident problems. Please have a look and see if you notice anything that I wouldn't know to be a problem:

FFDSHOW mentions an xvid.dll, that a search of my system shows to not be there. Should I go find it? Where is a reputable site to get it? Why else might Vegas be ignoring this clip? Finally, what about an effective utility to convert the xvid avi into an MPEG2, without doing too much damage to the bitrate?

Eagerly awaiting clever ideas,
Peyton

you have 3 codecs installed for xvid -- bang ..

1 is ffdshow, one is that 1.02 you intalled and the 3rd is DiVX ! ..

un-install the DiVX (at least for now) and uninstall the XViD orFFDSHOW (let just say you un-installed XViD) ...

reboot

now try in vegas ,,,

xvid and divx codecs tend to step on each other in some apps --

you can always tell which codec is in use using media player clasic or (better) graphedit

Thanks, B JM!

That's intriguing.

Suppose the utility that I originally installed the DivX codec for no longer works with only FFDSHOW installed. What would you suggest?

Cheers,
Peyton

then uninstall ffdshow and xvid and keep only divx ... its a toss up , you can use the 4CC changer and change the header from xvid to divx5 on the xvid avi also ....

personally -- i try not to have to many codecs installed , specially all these mpeg4 types .. only install what i need - then remove them ..

divx pro does come with procoder , though you dont have to install it .. if that is the app you mean ..
