My dear, dear friends - I think I can call you all that by now?
Well, after recieving some FanGui assistance from a chap, over on DellTalk, I've been able to FORCE the fan/s ON continously without them switching OFF/ON. I can now open ANY old VF Capture profile I wish; select ANY clips off of any of the drives firewire or C:; send an avi to Device for preview; hit the space bar or left click mouse; monitor via the Dazzle Hollywood Bridge my fantastic creations; have antivirus working; go on the Internet; open a text editor and no DROP-OUT :) - NO DROP-OUT!
FanGui is doing its thing, well mostly. Presently and on exiting PTT and closing down FanGui I'm needing to reboot to "hand-back" full fan control to Dell, otherwise the fans remain on full blast. I'm sure I'll fix this one wrinkle.
However, and this is a Dell-Sized "however", whatever FanGui is doing, it still does not get away from the spectre, IMHO, that there's definately a "glitch" in the fan callout, interrupting the flow of video through the firewire port. (Hmmmmm.... that's for you Chienworks.) I'm in no doubt that the chaps at Dell have produced a remarkable laptop. In all other respects the fan/s are being "called" into operation as a result of some truly clever "monitoring" - It looks at the CPU, the HD, the chassi and DVD/CD temperatures. It then decides to use the combination/s of 2 fans and their individual speeds to keep DellBoy cool. This is really, seriously Cooool! - I would just like to be able to place the last 6 months experience in front of Dell, AND at a department level capable of hearing what I say so that they can make what is, IMHO, a Dream Machine into a major "Video-Producing!" Schlaptop! Truly they should really know this and then place an explicitly explained and determined fix or whatever on their Forums/Support channels. Yes, I realise I'm on a BIOS that is elderly, but if they have had a response from NLE-DV users to ask the questions, then maybe they would spell out a fix. After all, happy Customers create product fidelity and promote the cause & mission of that company. This maybe be a little off "track" - but I don't think so. IMHO Dell should really be packaging VF instead of a well-known brand of "Waving" NLE. If companies can't hear what their Users are experiencing - they can either ignore and carry on getting their share value, in this time of falling IT stock values, this is contrary to Best Business practice and to some extent contrary to what I would believe shareholders wish. Or, IMHO worse, they can "Ostrich-like" hope the "desenters" whither and die on the vine. And we all know a recent "Dark-Side" reaction to this! Praise is nice, but contruction criticism makes for better options and products. Apologies for boring you all with this, but I had to "air" these comments.
In support of SF and VideoFactory the responses I've got from their side has been clear and respectfully listened to.
Case in point, I just got this today from VF support regarding the FAN thingy:-
"This is not something I have heard of, but I will keep it tucked away in
case anyone else has a similar problem. We do not have any direct contact
with Dell, so you would need to look elsewhere for suggestions on disabling
the fans on that machine."
Nice to know we have all added to the KB for VF on this particular issue. However, "This is not something I have heard of..." makes me think that these email Fan threads have not been read by VF Tech Support. If they have been, then why no previous words from them?
Getting back to Customer Fidelity:
1) I will now seriously consider upgrading to Vegas Video - knowing that my platform is "stable". Ipso facto, potentially more revenue for SoFo.
2) I'll keep punching on behalf of SoFo regarding VF as THE entry - and some - NLE s/w. Get my drift here? Are you reading this SoFo?
And finally: I must say that the blast of cold air coming out through the exhaust holes is plenty enough to cool down a six pack of beers - don't y'know! Oh yeah, when any of you lot are in London, I need to stand you a brew!
And not in any particular order, my many thanks go to:
Chienworks - for the intial "Hmmm...It must be something else." Ah Grasshopper! AND the "just to remove any nagging doubt in my own brain ..." invaluable comments.
MikeTree - for the staying power and the "How long have you had your Dell un-insperion?" Ho-ho!
Laz111 - for being Laz - okay whats with the 111? And the Cache manager "hand-holding" & research.
Discdude - for ... being a Dude! PLUS his contribution/s on the BIOS research.
IanG - for "Maybe someone in Dell doesn't like good music?" and yes your technical advice.
Cococoop - for the "I also don't think the different firewire cable was the fix " - where did you get that name from! Thanks Tom.
IF I've missed someone - sorry! My thanks to you as well.
As always,
Regards
Grazie
