Yet another mic question

plasmavideo wrote on 1/10/2006, 1:24 PM
This one is not about voiceover mics. When I worked in radio I used an EV RE20 that I really loved.

I need to find either a pair of mics to mount on a single stand, to axis rotate about 80 degrees or so for stereo, or a single point dual element stereo mic.My use would be for general purpose and for recording choirs at church and/or small groups or small stage presentations in our multi-purpose room.

I'm looking for something (as always) reasonably affordable for my meager budget.

Any suggestions or pros and cons of using dual vs single mics would be appreciated.

I might also use the mics spread furthur apart for larger groups, so the single point might not be the best choice.

Thanks. This is a great forum for just about anything.

matched pair is generally the best all-around option. If you're doing micing from a distance, I recommend the AT 4047, not too expensive, and great sounding field mics. Not for close mic techniques. (They're omni's, which you generally want to use for distance stereo micing) Easily configured in ORTF, XY, AB fashion.

Spot,

Are you talking about the AT 4047SVs?

They list for about $750 each, and are way too rich for my current blood. They would certainly be a fine choice, but I have a more limited budget than that, for sure. This is personal. non paying stuff, so my wife would kill me (non-violently, of course) :).

I've used the AKG 414Bs here at the station for some live groups, and they are quite flexible, but also out of my budget until I win the lottery!

What have you recorded with the 4047s that turned out the best?

Disk Two was heavily recorded with the 4047.

The AT 3032 is a pretty nice low cost, somewhat similar version. Slightly higher self-noise, but a sweet mic when you take the low cost into consideration. About $150.00 each or so if I recall correctly

I use a pair of AT 3035 (about $200) for just the application you are descibing. They are an extremely good buy. I record mostly chamber music recitals with these two mics either on a single stand or seperated on two stands for larger groups.

As I said in that other mic thread that's going on now I use the AT3035 too (for VO) and as said they are a great buy and quite similar to the RE20. If you like EV and economy (like me) for field work I use a couple of EV635a's and love them.

Thanks everyone. I'll look into the 3035s. The only ones I was aware of was the SV version.
