Your top 3 favorite things about VEGAS

I want to know what your top 3 favorite things about VEGAS are. What led you to buy it over any other app, or what caused you to use it alongside another app? If you have complaints or suggestions, I will make a separate thread for that, to keep this organized.

Similar, though the OP isn't specifically asking users to respond with a specific number of their favorite points about VEGAS, they are just commenting on their experience.

Favorites. What got me hooked into Vegas (it was Vegas 14 Edit Humble Bundle) was the timeline editing. It was FAST! It was fast enough that after two weeks of using it, I purchased VP15 Suite. Upgraded every year except this one so far.

For me, it was also ease of use once I figured out where everything was. It can be overwhelming for new people, but I was so "hooked", I had to know.

This forum... what wealth of experience, information and help.

Complaints. Timeline playback, inability to zoom into Video Preview. At the moment, what has kept me from purchasing VP20 is the BorisFX issue. The title editor is way long in tooth. I have title editors in consumer editing software that are far superior, FAR SUPERIOR. Lack of doing split screens easily. Multicam editing is way difficult. Hardware utilization with current CPU/GPU's. Lack of real Vegas Post tutorials by VEGAS. I am interested in upgrading to it. I get people pointing me to Hitfilm tutorials. An old complaint... in Video Effects tab, they are all alphabetized and not in their appropriate folders as they were in VP17. I have to use Plug-in Manager to see them in their proper (and easy to access) folders.

The complaints are really suggestions in disguise...

1. I like the build very much. It is built like a DAW. Everything is in a logical place. Which is not with some other programs.
2. Basic transitions such as fades can be made directly on the timeline, and not like for example in Premiere where you have to work with keyframes and opacity, this is smooth and fast !!
3. OFX standard , most effects all work in it. Ok Boris and Vegas have to reconcile but that will be fine.

A small personal wish list
1. I would really like to see a lock on the left of the tracks. I know you can lock the tracks but a lock on the track just works sooooo much faster.
2. I know with HOS(thank you HOS) we can create proxies ourselves and determine what size they are. But this should be in Vegas by default, set it in the preferences and determine the size. When you bring in new footage, the proxys are automatically made the size you want, and I would like a button on the playback with the possibility to turn them on and off. (there are more things in HOS that shoud be in Vegas by default).
3. And some more work on stability

I really want to make the jump to Vegas 20 Post this year, especially now that it's gotten so quiet around Hitfilm and compositing is something I love to do.

Well, it's been about 6 weeks since the issue with Boris FX was identified, and since then not an official peep from Vegas on the matter apart from a couple of brief comments about 5 weeks ago that they were working on it. So not sure we can say it'll be fine just yet ...

The endless amount of ways Vegas can go into Not Responding mode!

I just love that feature so much.

Vegas 20 still has that feature even on Windows 11 latest's updates and Nvidia RTX4070Ti Ryzen Series 7 and a 1 TB MV.2 hard disk.

Totally pathetic effort on Magic's ability to resolve these long standing problems.

I am looking at a Not Responding Vegas 20 Edit right now. 😡😱😲🤑

Brand new computer!

People who started their editing career with Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut, Avid Media Composer or Resolve Studio will took em roughly 3 months to migrate betwheen those software I mentioned and a solid 1 year to kinda master In and out of the software.

But if you started from VEGAS Pro, it will be almost imposible to migrate on another NLE!

VEGAS Pro is just crazy intuitive NLE I ever used. Took me solid 1 year++ to get a grasp on using Resolve, and till todate I cant fully commit or willingly edit on Premiere Pro, becoz how cumbersome the program really is.

The biggest advantage I see in VEGAS Pro is the timeline itself.

1. It uses "Track" logic instead of "Layer", so you can move ur audio track above ur video track. Which makes it easy to visually monitor a portion of sequences in the timeline.

2. Second is the non-destructive event. If you would to accidentally brought in a footage on a layer in other NLE, it would just simply get rid of that portion destructively. While VEGAS simply retain the event (Layer in other NLE) and created a crossfade. Tho, this can be argue that the destructive edit on other NLE makes ur editing much faster cuz U know that chuncks of event/layer will be cut out anyway. I'm 50-50 on this.

3. Pasting Event or Audio base of mouse cursor position is the most intuitive system I ever used in my life.

finally offered "Paste to target Track" shortcut but I still found it cumbersome.

4. I know only top 3, but imposible for me to not add this, You can zoom in/out using ur mouse wheel and literally click anywhere in the timeline to bring the playhead to the cursor position instantly. Unlike other NLE, if you to scrub the playhead on top of the timeline.

For me it was a simple upgrade, It was the timeline that, drag to crossfade etc.. & generally a UI that was very similar & an easy step up for me, I've been using Magix Movie since 2004 but a few yrs back i decided i wanted more, initially it was mainly software i wanted that could work with plugins like Mocha Pro.

Magix Movie Studio Platinum

There's 0 export with alpha in MMS, even export as png doesn't have transparency, but i still use it as it will play 4k variable MP4s with transitions 1st time in full res in the preview no prob , it's had a zoom preview window for yrs, it very rarely crashes & it'll export a simple cut/crossfade timeline 3-4x as fast as Vegas, but it's a basic editor, I got a lot more with Vegas but at a performance & reliability cost. (not a complaint, just an observation)

PS masking in MS is done with a B/W mask & chromakey/alpha, it's basic but I think it is a good learning tool to help understand masks better, Start with the basics sort of thing,

What is best about Vegas is clear. Editing style from Sonic foundry.

Sometimes I regret that it was the first software in which I started editing, because I am not able to switch to the competition, because the editing style of adobe and resolve is like from the time of dinosaurs. I can't get used to it and I don't want to.

We all know that Vegas's performance is poor compared to the competition. CPU utilization during editing is often barely 20%. Gpu often 40%. And the video playback is jerky. Stability improves. I don't see when it will get better. Maybe in Vp25.

A far more useful topic would be for users to express what they don't like about Vegas.

No reason for that, users express what they don't like about Vegas in every thread, including threads about what they like about Vegas. As we see here...

Not to mention, multiple threads have already been started about what users want to improve about Vegas, but they ignore them and instead go in every other thread complaining instead.

Keep it on topic or your comments will be removed.

Again, what got me hooked was how easy it was to transition from another editor to Vegas. The timeline was just so easy to use, and allowed for fast editing. I have other editors, but none of them allows me editing fast like this.

Having everything there in front of you is another reason. Drag effect to clip/track and you are still there in the editing window. And while Vegas can do complex editing, for a new person to get up and running and is familiar with editing, will have no problem with Vegas.

Looking forward for the next iteration!
