youtube audio synch problem

weaver wrote on 6/29/2008, 2:59 AM
I hate to bring up another youtube issue ... but I can't help it!
My audio is always out of synch with the video - by about 0.05 sec (sound is late). Now I go to the extreme of forcing my youtube version of my video (the vegas movie studio rendered .wmv file) to be out of synch to compensate for what youtube does to it. Of course - this takes several iterations of uploading to youtube and adjusting in VMS until it is right. This is not fun. Any suggestions?

This is a keyboard/piano instruction video - so the sound has to synch up with the video - otherwise it hurts the brain to watch. It may not sound like much - but 0.05 sec is bad.

I have VMS 6. I create the video with an older sony dv trv140 camcorder. In VMS I match up the video with a wav file created from Sonar. The basic rendered version of the .wmv file looks and sounds great (audio is in synch). When I upload to youtube - the sound is always out of synch. My rendering details are as follows:

best quality
audio: cbr , window media audio 9.2, 128 kbps 44khz stereo av cbr
video: cbr, windows media video 9, 30fps, 85% smoothness
bit rate: 1M

Do I need to get the latest version of VMS?
Comments?

Thanks

Four things to try:
1. Make sure you run the latest version of VMS 6.
2. Install the latest version of the WMV encoder: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=1d224714-e238-4e45-8668-5166114010ca&displaylang=en it might help
3. Install the trial of VMS8 and export in WMV and check it out if this time is in sync.
4. Use the VMS 8 version to export in the Sony AVC MP4 1024kbps PSP fullscreen template instead of WMV.

Eugenia - thanks for taking the effort to respond - and offer some suggestions. So far - I tried everything - but it didn't improve the situation: the audio still lags the video (by around .2 sec) in youtube.

Specifically, I have the latest wmv encoder, and I installed the demo version of Vegas 8 movie studio. I didn't see an option for the Sony avc mp4 format you suggested. Is that format option in the "pro" demo?

For those interested, the following is a link to the full-up version posted at my own web site (click on the "free" link for the song "Theres a lifting of the hands"):
http://www.idwkeyboard.com/lessons.htm

Now go to a 12sec short sample of the exact same video on youtube to see/hear the audio lag:

Plus - if anyone has any tips on how to improve the quality of audio on youtube - please help me! I realize youtube converts the audio to mono - but I seem to be overloading the sound in youtube. I don't hear the same terrible audio on other youtube videos. I recently learned that by adding &fmt=18 at the end of the url for the youtube video ... you get stereo. When I do that to my youtube video - it make the bad audio quality even worse. Yikes.

While they probably don't address audio synch, here are two threads on the Vegas Pro forum:

ONE

TWO

I hope they help.

Question though... what are you doing with the audio that requires you to use Sonar? VO? What if you were to stretch the audio on the VMS timeline such that it was out of synch in VMS but then becomes in-synch in youtube? That might affect the pitch but worth a try.

I use Cakewalk Sonar to record the audio part of my keyboard (via mixer). Sonar enables me to create a wav file (plus it enables me to master the sound (compression/limiting etc)). Then, in VMS, I match up the wav file with the video. The resulting video (as shown on my web site - idwkeyboard.com) has the audio and video perfectly matched up. Actually, it amazes me how the audio and video can synch up so well when from 2 different sources. You would think they would mismatch over time - but I haven't experienced that. You correctly point out my only remaining option: mismatch the audio (no stretching involved nor needed) in VMS a tad so that it looks right on youtube. However - you wouldn't believe the headache that entails. The variables are endless since the adjustment seems a bit different every time I do it. Basically I work at several iterations of small adjustments using samples of the video before rendering and uploading the whole thing. It takes a couple of hours extra.

I could imagine how much of a pain that is.

One thing came to mind as I re-read your OP, you mention your audio is at 44khz. Video audio is usually 48khz so I did a search and found THIS thread. Could your issues be related to 44 vs 48 khz or bit size variances mentioned in the thread?

Well - I saved my audio as 48khz. I fed it thru VMS (and set all the audio settings to 48Khz) and up to youtube ... and I still get the out of synch condition. Interestingly, the actual sound of the piano notes are now about 1/2 an octave lower!

I finally discovered a work around: take the VMS video file ... put it in Windows Movie Maker ...and render the file ... and upload to youtube. The result is no audio synch problem ... plus, the audio is much more passable. There is an obvious VMS/youtube compatibility issue.

File a bug report to let Sony know about it. They don't usually read this forum. There's a email form on this site for support.
