IGPU Question
In previous builds of VP (I don't have 19), I was able to mitigate stability issues by disabling IGPU all together. These days, the development focus seems to have been more iGPU centric, thus no timeline decode acceleration for nVidia using HEVC source for example. Your best chance now is Intel QSV. Personally I'm not interested in that method since a dedicated powerful graphics card is always going to outperform an iGPU. But only if the software supports it. Currently, I see better performance with my system using Resolve as it will use nVidia. As much as I love the VP interface, I currently can't really use it, unfortunately, for most things HEVC.

HEVC is not a professional capture format. It is a delivery format. There is quite some evidence demonstrating 10-bit HEVC 422 SLOG3 can be just as effective quality wise compared to RAW formats that shoot linear and thus require a ton of storage space, and can also throw up some editing challenges. AVC has been around for a while and is widely accepted as a 'professional' recording format, especially the Intra-variant. HEVC is based on AVC, but it's a smarter newer generation codec evolution, which is necessary and which we are definitely seeing now in cameras supporting 10-bit 4K and 8K moving forwards. One could argue that perhaps an HEVC-Intra variant, which exists but no camera does use it yet, might be the 'true professional' recording format, time will tell. The problem with RAW formats not only is storage waste, which creates infrastructure problems for a wide base of prosumer shooters, but also there isn't a uniform approach and not a lot of cross compatibility: ArriRAW, RedRAW, Blackmagic, Canon,.. everyone does their own version which is not compatible and which in turn segments the user base and requires extra coding support as they all offer different features. As for ProRes, I consider this an Apple thing for editors who don't care about GPU acceleration. It's another 422 Intra comparable to Sony's 10/422 AVC-I which is also netflix approved as a professional shooting format.

It's just sad that so much of the precious developer's teams time is spent on developing support for Blackmagic (!) RAW where I would have thought that BM camera users would preferably use their 'native' optimized editor Resolve rather than a more expensive and less effective co-competitors NLE. Similarly, I'd say someone who seriously invested in RED camera infrastructure shooting RedRAW I would have seen using Apple and either Adobe or FinalCut. Traditionally the user base for Vegas is Sony shooters since it used to be their software; not supporting the biggest chunk of your user base as they develop is a big mistake imo. All that time spent on developing additional software and other functionality, where all I wanted was a faster and more reliable editor.

but Vegas is not using the IGPU for any processing, the 5700XT is doing that. Not convinced if that is true. In the video you can only see the Intel's (iGPU) decode activity in the Task manager, but not the Radeon. It would suggest the Radeon's activity simply being a data throughput to the monitors, hence the low usage, but not timeline decoding (which we want VP to do). Maybe @Howard-Vigorita can shed some light on this [I think post above has already done that], perhaps with a Schwarzenegger-sounding voice-over ;-)) ?? PS, I think when putting a cursor down the timeline, VP will preload a clip. If you leave the cursor where it is, activity will disappear after a while and playback 'should' be smooth. But yes, this doesn't work for cuts/crossfades.

Somewhat OK results for Intel, but no evidence of Radeon doing any Decode heavy lifting. In context, I wouldn't expect a built-in iGPU to be able to perform as good as a $x,xxx dedicated graphics card. That's just fine for watching youtube etc, but not video editing. But if the editing software doesn't support that, then there's trouble.

@Former user This is perhaps a little off topic and better discussed in a separate thread; I was more interested in raising the awareness about HEVC and GPUs not iGPUs; However I have also seen those lags between cuts, and my believe is it has to do with poor read-ahead management, pipeline issues, yet unfixed. Because what I can see is that the timeline playback fps becomes stable again once you re past a cut. Annoying

You can't upscale 422 to 444... upscaling only affects pixel resolution, not color. Perhaps not the correct terminology to use, I’d be happy to learn the correct word to use; but the idea being a simple recode / transcode process if that was possible, without having to go through another recompression stage. /EDIT after some self-reeducation, perhaps it would be 'chroma-subsampling-upsampling' hence I'm not surprised no one uses it, as it sounds somewhat silly ;-)

@Howard-Vigorita, please note that there is NO hardware acceleration from any manufacturer for HEVC 10-bit 422 at this stage, apart from latest Apple M1 and planned from Intel. However, there is for 420 and 444 from NVidia. So, one could edit 420 on the timeline without the need to proxy (as I am doing in Resolve); and perhaps transcode ('upscale') 422 to 444 which in turn again could be GPU accelerated - for keying work; The other thing slowly starting to become 'the other new normal' is 50/60p with HEVC; Sony has omitted 25p as a choice in A7S3, and I guess FX3 (which is basically the same camera). My thought would be the intent being to phase out Interlaced as the world is heading towards progressive screen formats everywhere (check your smartphones, computer screens). From what I understand, Interlaced happens pretty much at 1/50-60th anyway just not the full frame, only half https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interlaced_video

well @fr0sty if I could use both I wouldn't be in that predicament; but seriously, you compare the performance of intel UHD630 to nVidia GTX 1060 6GB in HEVC 420 decoding it's unmatched. or AVC for that matter.

10-Bit HEVC 4K 420 is nVidia decode supported and working in Resolve Studio. Playback is buttery smooth even on my now slightly come-of-age machine, with plenty of CPU resources left for other purposes. In my test I even applied a SLOG3>709 conversion LUT, no dramas.

I haven't tested my iGPU, since it's disabled in the BIOS, because a few versions back it was causing VP stability issues. My nVidia is a far more potent graphics chip and I would like to use it for this purpose. This is video editing software, I would like to use my dedicated graphics card not a basic iGPU.

Have downloaded the Test version of VP19. Both my 10-Bit HEVC 420 and 422 4K clips now load to the timeline without crashing so far. That's nice. But i cannot see any nVidia GPU playback acceleration at all, and the playback speed is atrocious. Converting to Proxy also happens without nVidia acceleration and is quite time consuming, and resulting image quality is poor (being a system-set proxy). Will wait until someone tells me this gets GPU acceleration, and re-test, if I can.

For those who said Vegas19 is not optimized
you might not get the same results using a more modern codec or higher bitrates, such as 10-bit HEVC. What exactly was the source material you used? (codec, details)

Sony A7S3 HD 10 bit video
in theory, most 'contemporary' nVidia GPUs should already support 444. But not 422. So, if Vegas was codec friendly, in my ideal world (which I don't live in), one should be able to ingest 10bit 422, convert to proxy and edit, and render out using another 444 prerender uprez utilizing full GPU power after that. But there's no Vegas Prepare (broken promise) since VP18 release. No native transcode. No 422.

It's in the name, High Efficiency. Hence little data, at a great quality, albeit at the cost of compute intensity, hence one needs hardware acceleration to work with effectively; no one had a problem with this with XAVCS being AVC, which this more sophisticated codec is built on. But AVC is OLD and the world moves on. So do I, and if my NLE isn't, then I have a problem. Most of us now shoot/edit 4K which is 4x the data. As we're heading down the road of more resolution>more data all the time, this is one necessary path we must take. And yes, when you can decode with Intel, why can't you with the faster nVidia? Also, if one developer cannot afford the license fee, then give the client a chance to purchase separately, for that 80c.

Yes it can, but again, I would stay away from 422 unless you really need it (chroma key). Best to shoot XAVCS-Intra for best editing speed (and enjoy nvidia acceleration which outperforms igpu intel any time). If you want to edit 10-bit HEVC 420 4K SLOG3 at speed, you might have to look elsewhere to resolve those issuez.

I can't see $0.80 royalty costs being an issue for poor codec support. Also, nVidia is just as good if not better when you choose the right settings (you have more choices, more flexibility). So, no reason not to fully embrace it. HEVC has been around long enough, it's the obvious way forward, and the team has chosen to ignore this albeit various requests, for other reasons.

GH5 HEVC + VP19
I have given up on VP18 for the time being for the lack of HEVC 10bit 420 GPU timeline acceleration / playback support. I have mentioned this many times before. 422 not working at all, not even for a proxy workflow, is embarassing. Then spending time on codec support for Blackmagic and Apple is rather questionable imo. where traditionally VP has a historic Sony user base. For some, a low data footprint 10bit SLOG is preferred as it can deliver similar quality than data intensive RAW formats. Devs time wasted on Post and cloud features that I don't really wanted where all I wanted is an NLE that can edit quick and reliably. May have to sit this one out chaps good luck

A few questions I haven't seen answers for so far / potential show stoppers: Does VP19 support 10-Bit HEVC 420 and 422, and has GPU support for timeline playback acceleration for those formats? (Sony A7S3, FX3,..) If there's no 10-Bit HEVC 422 GPU timeline playback acceleration support, can those files still be read on import and converted into a proxy of choice? (and rendered in original quality on output) Is timeline playback read-ahead improved so that frames no longer get dropped between clips on a busy timeline where a PC would clearly be capable of sustained playback speed Is it possible to manually grade 10-bit LOG footage in a LOG kind-of way, not just Linear or using a LUT transform? 360 Source: Where are we at with 360 editing? This has been pretty poorly implemented in VP18, has there been any progress / improvements? Subscription vs Outright: Is it that subscription has 1 seat, and outright 2, why not give subscription 2 seats? Colour Charts: when can we see support for Xrite Passport Video to match cameras, auto grade? Multi-Aspect Editing: When can we see simple multi-aspect reframe / output from a single timeline to cater for various social media formats on output?

Sony A7S3 HD 10 bit video
In my experience, don’t try to work with 10-bit XAVC-HS (HEVC) files, 422 is no hardware support and will not import; 420 will import but is not nvidia accelerated at this moment. But this might give you the opportunity to use proxies if need be. I feel XAVCS-Intra (h264) edits fine on VP. For the other stuff I just bought Resolve Studio as I got frustrated

well that was pretty much the proof in the pudding that I can quite happily play back those files and grade without a problem, with my slow intel 630 disabled, and leverage my fast RAM and other resources; just not in VP it seems, sadly.
