Wish list for Vegas 9
Charles it's all already there; it's called REAPER. Justin picked up and ran with the baton that Sony sadly dropped long, long ago now. I don't think I'm being pessimistic when I say that the development of a feature set like you outline, at this stage in Vegas' life and given its history, is fairly unlikely to say the least. Don't get me wrong - I'd love to see it happen. I just really don't think it will. Regards Ben

Vegas Pro 8 and Yamaha DM 1000 V2
For what it's worth guys - and it was a good while ago now - I did successfully manage to get my Yamaha 03D working in 'full duplex' mode with Vegas, via Wisemix. There were though a number of issues I had, mainly about accuracy which was severely lacking! Also the 03D doesn't have touch-sensitive faders, which made attempting to override existing automation very difficult indeed! It ended up being nice eye candy, to watch the faders fly, but not much more than that... and a lot more hassle than it was worth. I'm pretty sure though that the DM1000 does have touch faders, in which case it could certainly be worth a go. Just prepare yourself for a lot of perserverence! Ben

Vegas 8 - sync offset strangeness
I've had assurances that this would be dealt with, but I can't see any sign of a fix in the release notes for 8a. I can't test for myself as my demo has expired and, as I've said, I won't purchase the app until this has been resolved. Can someone who has purchased Vegas 8 confirm whether or not this has been addressed by the update? Thanks Ben

A direct plea to Peter - please, please can you push for an option for this sync offset info to be totally switched off in a Vegas 8 update. Even if you just sneak it into the internal prefs, that would be enough. It's really making any serious audio work in Vegas 8 very difficult indeed. As a result, the release feels like one stop forward (with the routing improvements in 8) and two steps back (with this). Thanks in advance. Ben

Vegas 8 - sync offset strangeness
Many thanks ibliss - I had fiddled with that in internal prefs but hadn't thought of changing the tint to 0. That helps a little. I also tried changing "Event Sync Color" to "FFFFFF" which makes the sync text background white, so it's slightly less obstrusive - you see a block of white over the waveform. But it still majorly gets in the way. I can't believe people haven't been going more nuts about this (since Vegas 7). This is really crazy! Unless you're talking about people doing strictly audio-post work, this sync information is just not something one wants or need when working with audio. It's a major distraction. As if we needed Sony to rub in our faces the fact that they have no time or respect for their audio users! A bizarre way to destroy some of Vegas' editing elegance in one fell swoop. A very strange decision by Sony not to give us an option for this. I was seriously considering purchasing Vegas 8, but unless Sony give us an option to turn off this sync info altogether, I will definitely pass. Ben

V8 UI question

Despite the much welcome console addition, it's things like this and the new splash screen/logo of a camera (!) that are saying "we're definitely a video app - go away audio guys". I know it's functionally unimportant, but I found the camera splash a real turn off! Ben

Plugin chooser bug in new mixing console
Another mixing console bug. If you change the track colors in Preferences > Display, the original Vegas track colors are still shown in the console. The timeline however does show the custom track colors - so you end up with some obvious confusion. Can anyone confirm? Ben

Hmmm, I don't know if anyone else has noticed this, but virtually every 'module' that's been added since the demise of Sonic Foundry - eg this, the Media Manager, the keybinding interface etc - has suffered from this problem and has been wholly un "Vegas-like". Vegas' genius was always its user-interface - other apps did, and do, beat it in terms of sheer number of features. Sadly I think it's very likely that the UI gurus who created Vegas and ACID have long since left, leaving Sony to just bolt on bits and pieces... none of which feel like SoFo/Sony stuff should. I think it's really sad that Vegas' UI increasingly is being compromised.

Yes, which is great news Charles. At last! But they are, pretty much, the only two significant new audio features in Vegas 8. Would have been nice if Sony has really taken this new mixer concept to heart and rolled with it - also adding things like folder tracks and fader groups, etc. I mean if we accept for a second that MIDI is never going to happen, because seemingly it's not, then surely the goal on the audio side should be to make Vegas the best editor (which it is) and mixer (which it isn't yet) out there? In which case, Vegas has still got some way to go with its mixing tools, but I'm glad to see at least that Sony's finally making some progress on this front. Really I'm not going to gripe too much - as a Vegas release goes (ie don't expect too much. Or anything at all, er, really) this is pretty good for us audio guys :) Look forward to checking out 8. Ben

Will Vegas Pro 8 have improved audio routing?
For once, some very good news! That's a couple of important things I and others here having been requesting for a long time. Looking at the screenshot, the mixer looks like it'll be pretty useful. I don't suppose we have folder tracks in this release too? Also, long awaited and would benefit even more now we have this new mixer... Ben

Wow, I don't want to start a fight here Peter, but for many years on these boards I've read you defend the old Vegas 'mixer' paradigm, arguing against Vegas having a more standard vertical mixer. But I'll think you'll find of the Vegas audio users currently left, not many of us are bothered with having a vertical mixer. I'm pretty sure most of these requests would have come from our great friends in the video community [rolls eyes]. Well, I'm all for a new mixer if it comes with long-needed extended functionality, like sends from busses, a fix to the pan>bus problem and things like fader ganging, track groups and folder tracks. Are we going to see this stuff Peter? Or just the current way of doing things duplicated and represented, erm, the other way around? Ben

is MIDI a dead horse?
I'm in exactly the same boat Bradly, and to you other guys too. It's tough when you do this for living and your tool of choice feels abandoned... yet you still find it hard to leave. I've too been investing some time in the 'other app' and have been pretty active on the forum... recently purchased the commercial version. The UI still unfortunately doesn't quite have the intuitive and rock solid feel of Vegas... but feature-wise it's way, way beyond Vegas. And the other stuff will hopefully eventually get there. Do come on board and get involved! The more of us Vegas refugees the better... (Sony, we'd love to stay with Vegas/ACID. What about giving us a darn good reason for doing so? We've all been loyal customers, myself for nearly a decade, of Sound Forge and then Vegas. We've been waiting with baited breathe for years... it's crunch time guys. What about showing us what you can do...?)

Vegas doesn't send tempo, transport or timecode information to VSTs; things that many plugins require. The UAD plugs don't perform properly... But Peter, we''ve all made these points many, many times on this forum in the past. Surely none of this is news to you?! Ben

They actually just announced native VST in addition to AU. Although Vegas doesn't fully conform to the VST spec, it does indeed host VST plugins. With a lucky roll of the dice, the Oxford plugs should work in Vegas.

Moving Markers
Only way I know of (kind of) doing this is by using Ripple - selecting either of the Ripple options that move markers. But this will only be helpful if you're planning on moving everything on a track or project to the right, in which case the markers will move indeed with the events. If you want to just freely move around a single event that has a Vegas timeline marker on top of it, that's not possible. The only other option - depending on what you need to do this for - is to render a section containing the marker(s) you want to move with the events, ensuring you have "save markers in media file" ticked in the render dialog. Then, if you have "show event markers" enabled, you'll be able to see the markers in the timeline, effectively move them around with the event and (in Vegas 7?) snap to them. It's not quite what you're after, but may help! Ben

Yep, and Vegas *was* great for audio. Set a bunch of standards, which many people using other DAWs I think don't recognise. The GUI was, and still is, ground-breaking and I feel truly sorry for the audio coders at SMS. The guys deciding the direction of Vegas, unfortunately long ago, missed a great opportunity. It really has been sad to see this app fall by the wayside and under achieve, so to speak. But, for good or bad, others benefit from the innovations Vegas made back in the late 90s, and so we all move on... Ben
