Writing Vegas 11 off as JUNK!
I haven't tried Vegas 11. But I was having enormous problems with Vegas 10. I solved them by going back to Vegas 8. Maybe not for everyone, but sure worked for me. I don't see the need to give Sony more money for an increasingly inferior product.

Sticking with 8.0c.
Used the 11 tryout on my wife's Windows 7 laptop. Not a happy experience.

"Black Clip" problem described extensively here: http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?MessageID=773927&Replies=59 Shows up in many recent versions of Vegas. Some never seem to experience it, others experience it constantly.

Thanks, Chienworks, for the warning. It's certainly worth being vigilant, but I have never had this problem in 8.0c, FWIW. Makes me wonder if there's some underlying hardware or driver incompatibility with certain versions of Vegas, since there seems to be so much variability in people's experience with this bug.

Clips go black
I'm using exclusively Cineform, and I see this problem nearly every time I'm editing, even with only one project open at a time. This is with Vegas 10.0d, 32-bit in Windows XP. No anti-virus running, very lean system. I see no such problems in 8.0c, so I guess I'm going back to that until this is straightened out.

Vegas 10 - What's new, what's better, what'
Just purchased the upgrade, along with Production Assistant 2.0. Haven't had a lot of time to play with it yet, but here are my faves (in no particular order): - Track grouping. (Yes, I want more! Group mute and group-level FX would be the bomb!) - Audio event level FX. ('Bout time!) - Here's an obscure one that just saved me a bundle: the ability to transcode to Cineform .MOV files (if you have a Cineform product installed). Didn't really want to shell out for the upgrade for NeoScene to Neo HD. Now I don't have to, and I can share Cineform files with my collaborator, who uses Final Cut. Had a few stability problems early on, but running Windows Update and updating Cineform to the latest version seems to have smoothed them out.

Don't throw your monopod away just yet. Try this: 1. Find an old butt pack. Turn it around so the bag hangs in the front, just below your belt. 2. Rig a strap to the top of your monopod, so you can hang it around your neck. 3. Collapse the monopod down and stick the bottom end in the butt pack, so the weight is supported by the pack. 4. Set the tilt head so the camera is level, and the monopod forms a triangle with your arm, the butt pack and your body. Voila! You now have a very effective Steady-Stick-style mobile stabilizer at a fraction of the cost of a commercial model. You can walk without tripping, and you'll find that if you pull down slightly on your right arm, you can get very stable results. Just ignore any "phallic" jokes you might get.

Vegas 10 release info
Most of the things on my wishlist are there. Glad I passed on V9. Assuming everything works as advertised, V10 looks like it's worth the upgrade (for me anyway). Track grouping and fully implemented closed captioning are two of the biggies for me. I'll also be interested in seeing what the user interface improvements are.

Is the Trimmer scriptable yet?
Thanks, Johnny. I was afraid of that. Do you think this is a bug, or a permanent design limitation? Can you think of any way to do Steps 1, 2 & 5 on my list above, using keyboard shortcuts instead of the mouse? If I could do that, I could at least record a keyboard macro I could run every time I wanted to copy a region into the Trimmer. I tried, but couldn't find a way to do it reliably.

They're located in my hometown, and I use them all the time. Prices are competitive, but their service and customer relations are top-knotch. If you're a repeat customer, they give you your own sales associate. They are also a full-service repair center for most of the major brands. I can't recommend them highly enough.

I have always had this problem when using ASIO drivers. Try switching to Classic Wave drivers in Audio Device Preferences instead.

Renaming Sony Vegas?? - VOTE!
I hate ProEdit. Too generic. I never understood why Sonic Foundry didn't come up with the name "Video Forge" or "Media Forge" to go along with "Sound Forge." I've heard from Spot that "Vegas" was a poorly-kept secret code name that just never went away.

OT: Less expensive options to EX1? HVRZ5U? Others?
Takes more than resolution to make a camera. As someone else said in this thread, it all depends on how you'll be delivering the final product. The EX-1 produces a fine image, no doubt. I would certainly agree that it is the cheapest camera in its class. On the other hand, the EX1 is ergonomically awkward at best, and uses either absurdly expensive media or requires additional adapters to use with SD cards. Don't forget to factor in the cost of a good backup system, if you care about archiving your footage. I was looking at the same question you were about a year back. I ended up buying a used JVC HD100 and have been very, very happy. Sure, it only records 1280x720, but since most of my product is still delivered on DVD and/or the web, that's more than sufficient. Meanwhile: - the color rendition is superb; - there's lots of tweaks you can make in-camera to your image; - it records in the "common denominator" format of 720 24p; - you can carry it all day long without fatigue; - the shoulder-mount format not only looks cool as hell, but also means you can achieve stable handheld shots; - it accepts industry-standard accessories like Anton Bauer batteries; - it has an interchangeable lens, and you can get 3rd-party adapters that let you use inexpensive SLR lenses for extreme telephoto work, and; - it records on $2-per-hour DV tape that's available at the corner drug store. I've seen used HD100s and HD110s selling for $2500. You can get used HD200s (the successor to the HD100/110) in mint condition now for around $3500. If you spring for the Firestore disk unit, too, the HD200 will also deliver 1080i. Lots of options out there. Pick what works for your kind of shooting.

32-bit floating point video processing
How about with color-grading? Does 32-bit help here? I've heard conflicting reports. Floating-point works fine on my system with 8.0c, but it is SLOOOOOOW..... If there's a significant benefit to color-grading with 32-bit, I can put up with it, though.

Production Assistant "Archive" Question
If it works the way the similar function in Ultimate S works, then it should create a new veg file in the target directory that points to the correct files.

major bug : V9 playback freeze with 1394 preview
Happened to me once. I closed out Vegas and started again, haven't had a problem since. I'll keep my eyes peeled.
