Render time?
Just rendered another smaller project with little in the way of FX save for some velocity changes and blur. About 10 minutes long,----machine crunched it up nicely in a reasonable amount of time. SO,---must have been that fuzzy frame effect that slowed down the munching. Sounds cheezy to use this for an entire hour,---but it was done tastefully and suited the project. I will however NEVER do that again. "After" effect? That mean rendering proejct to .avi then adding and rendering the fuzzy frame effect by itself. This would be faster? Another question? Working on 30 second TV commercial. 18 tracks. Video seems to be lagging behind VO by several seconds. Need to fit narration to video,---stills in this case. Why the lag? Hw can we overcome it.

Thanks Grazie. You should get into counselling. I've settled down a bit. Meds help. I don't hate Vegas. I want to understand it. Anyway,---project has cookie-cutter effect for entire length. A dramatic fuzzy effect. Like we used to do with vaseline on lenses,---way back. Could that have slowed down render time? Apart from that,---some velocity reduction, not much,---bit of colour correction. That's about it.

Vegas Poll
Reason for the poll? Think there are many who would read this message and pass. They participate to learn as much as they can about Vegas. And to pass along that aquired knowledge to others. I've been on the receiving end of a lot of that generously shared knowledge in this community. Whether participants use it as a tool for home videos or as a tool to make hundreds of thousands a year is incidental IMHO.. There are many on both ends of the spectrum in this community,---equally skilled in the use of the tool. Some who make their living with it, others value it as their diversion or hobby. Still others use it for a bit of both. FYI,-- I am in pigeon hole #1 and fighting to stay there. One of the reasons I'm still there is because a lot of # 1. 2, 3 and 4 folks gratiously listen and respond to questions,---though they sometimes must roll their eyes. Well, that's the long answer.

Weekend Projects - What's up guys ?
Since I've been full-time in this business, never really separated weekends from weekdays. Client popping by this morning to view two TV spots. They may need some tweaking. The spots. That could run into the weekend. Always stuff to do. Clean up system. It's a mess. Archive projects. Maybe this weekend I'll try to learn some of the new features in Vegas 6.0b. Maybe before the release of Vegas 7.0. Thinking about subbing part of job to an animator,---but if there's time left over this weekend may explore the capabilities of 3D in Vegas. So many things to learn,--- so little time, so few brain cells left. Oops there go another million! Darn. Have a good weekend.

OT: buying a shotgun mic - suggestions?
Like Spot says, Audio Technica 897 is best bang for buck. So versitile you can even do an acceptable VO with it. Most over-rated mic Sennheiser 416,---stay very far away from that one.

Need Hospital Footage
Request permission from hospital administation and shoot your own. Make a donation to hospital in return. Privacy laws mean you'll have to be careful not to identify patients. Long shots, low shots, back shots, leg shots, going down the hall on a bed shot,----shots of the ceiling from a moving gurney. Best to keep ALL folks unidentifiable unless they agree to sign a release form. OR,---buy some stock footage for 2 or three hundred dollars if your budget allows. May be fastest and easiest. Even cheapest when you factor in your time. OR build a hospital set and hire actors. Compicated and costly. OR,--go to ER faking sickness and smuggle you camera in. Shoot when they're not looking.

Messages must have crossed in etherland. Anyway,---I think I inadvertenlty hit the automation settings button at least twice. Is default for that button "automation wrtie". Other tracks are "automation off". Should I change to "automation off" for all tracks? Can you tell what a technical whiz I am? Hey, that's why I'm using Vegas.

C-Span? That's the raw stuff. Good if you can spare the time to watch. We depend on journalists and news organizations to do that for us,---and "report" what they see. The point of this thread is the fairness, or lack thereof, with which they do that. And I'm saying money dictates whether that's a major consideration with the commercial networks. And let's not for one moment think the BBC doesn't have an agenda because it's non-commercial. Every newsroom does. Even if the reporter tries to be fair and responsible his/her take can be skewed by a producer's vetting and editing to get reports to conform. And that producer is a producer because he has proven himself as a champion of that organization's agenda,---BBC, CBC, PBS, ABC, NBC, FOX, CTV. That's how your move up the ladder. Rebels are beaten down. Oh yes they are. Responsibility and fairness in the media,----largely a myth. You can't legislate it, and as long as there are people, reporters, eidtors, anchors, with varying opinions,---you'll get different takes on the same story. Even the voice intonation of an announcer can change the slant of a story. The eybrows of a TV anchor can say more than the words.. The best we can do is thougtfully digest and discern. Freedom of the press isn't perfect. But imprefection is not a good reason to muzzle the town cryer! He will have his say. We need to learn what not to believe.

Watch the PBS nightly news as an example of integrity with a decidedly "liberal" bent. Nonetheless, responsible journalism. Then look at the numbers. As long as the networks are selling commercial time the programming will be designed to attract the maxium number of viewers. Whatever that takes. Programmers don't get paid to promote be "fair and responsible". They get paid to attract viewers,----lots of them. Their job depends on it. So you get a latter day version of the medicine show. The guy in the stovepipe hat, loud vest and frock coat. He's the porgrammer. His job is to draw the crowds and sell the snake oil. "Fair and responsible" has nothing to do with that.

I can tell you one comes to understand there is really no equal treatment of any topic in the news. You learn that while working on the inside for 33 years as I have. Used to be subtle, almost hidden,---code words. Israelis are killed in battle, Palestinians die. Still do. In one news environment where I worked if you were not anti-American, you quietly kept that to yourself. I've worked for producers who made no bones about their personal hatred of George Bush. Of course they don't write that. But does that colour their show or how reporters and writers are vetted and edited? It can still be subtle. Then there's Fox News. No code words there. And maybe that's just as well. To know what the agenda is up front. Then there's CNN. The king of info-tainment. Still trying to walk the not-so-fine line between journalism and entertainment. Recent banter between an anchor and a legal expert on CNN on the Michael Jackson thing.. End of report,---master control plays Happy Birthday for the expert? She says,----“I think I'm going to cry”? Oh my. It was her birthday. What the hell! Edward R. Murrow was spinning in his grave. "Good night,---and good luck", were his parting words. That's about as familiar as he got. Is that good? A journalist may say yes. A programmer? Maybe not! As long as you’re selling commercial time, you have to attract viewers. The programmers win. Maybe that means dumbing down the news. Maybe it means being outrageously one-sided. Whatever it takes to attract an audience. During my years in radio news it was the rule of thumb that no listener could concentrate more than 20 or 30 seconds on any one story. You compressed the news or the day, sports and weather into 4:30. Try to do justice to both sides of a complex issue with those restraints. Fair and responsible reporting? Call me cynical. But there is no such thing as fair and impartial reporting. Never was. Never will be. And you can't legislate it. As long as we are human we're coloured by who we are. Who we've become. Life and life's experiences shape us. So do producers and editors with an agenda. There is no such thing as an objective report,---because there's no such thing as an objective reporter. The best ones try harder to be fair and responsible, trying sometimes to suppress their personal bias. The worst don't care, as long as they do their damage to the enemy, whether conservative or liberal. But aggressiveness on either side of the spectrum welcomes retaliation. And polarization is what's behind much of the rule bending and breaking we see by media outlets today. Polarization! An insatiable monster that feeds on itself and divides.

Matching Audio
Think source audio was just way too thin to ever match with stuff already laid down. Re-recorded those segments so source was closer to the ear. Little tweeking and I think we're there. Weird thing though,---tried to match up audio by putting new clips on separate track and applying same FX as main narration track. Could barely get a level on new track. Inserted another,---same thing. Real low. May have had something to do with "automation settings". Bit puzzled by those. On narration track that button is green,---on nat sound looks like kind of a red centred star,---BG music is that same star. What is default and how can it be reset?
