Your Feedback Requested - Simulated Weapon Video
Hi Rick, Did you do your own VO and script? If so don't take this personally,---but it may be a tad overboard on the bass and the echo. I think you're trying to get a tech sound. But this may sound a bit too robotish. The read needs some more colour and character for people to listen and connect. More human warmth. If it's in the budget,---hire a professional announcer. One who has the skill to communicate one-to-one. If he is,---my aplogies,---could be the processing. A great read will add the polish you need to match the great looking video and editing. A few things that got my attention in script,---purely subjective. Guns are a lot of things,---"new dawn",---I don't think so. "Force unforced training",----huh? Projectiles is pronounced pro-JECT-tiles,---like ceramic "tiles". "Meticulously manufactured>"---another way Some fine-tuning with the script and VO will kick this up a big notch. Again video and editing rocks hugely! Just one guy's opinion. Hope this helps,---Rick,---would like to see a re-worked version. Kind Regards, Dan

Is home video dying?
Discovered some old 8mm in 93 year-old aunt's attic recenlty. 50 plus years old. Remember quality isn't so great in first palce. Shot them off a screen.. Grainy with jerky camera movements. Pass the Graval But what a treasure to see loved ones,---many long gone, almost come back to life. It's all about content. Seek these out get them on a hard drive,---lay down an audio track. You will weep unless your heart is granite. Show them to family,---send them as gifts. Save them for the next 200 hundred years. Priceless! And the home videos of today will be as valuable in years to come and with today's NLEs they have a measure of quality to boot even as home movies. Take a camera with you even if it's a handycan. Get it the habit. Fifty years from now your offspring will thank you. The same people won't give a damn about those slick corporate projects you cranked out and made a million doing.

Distored Sound
Thanks Douglas. This is good learning experience,---though somewhat humiliting as I worked in radio for more than 30 years. Back in the analog days VU meter levels tended to be gospel. No excuse,---been working with digital sound for lots of years. Still learning,---again. WAVES or iZOTOPE something I can get from VASST site?

Wireless. But headphones were not functioning,---my problem. So relied on meter rather than ear,---bad gamble. Even though peaking slightly in red on meter. Meantime found ALC was off and channel for wireless was set to 60db rather than default 50db.

OT: How does the little guy win?
Hi Dave, We chatted briefly in the cafe earlier this week. If this is your passion,---go for it. I made the move six months ago at the age of 55 after 33 years as a journalist. Sure it's scary. I'm still in the growing phase. There is risk involved in every thing that's worthwhile. But if you love making video,---you'll be good at it,---and if you're good at it your will be a success. Do what you were made for. Do what motives you. What quickens your heart and gives you a buzz. Get in touch with every missions organization you can think of if thats where you want to work. Churches and parachurch organizations are always producing video for any number of things,---church planting, marriage enrichment, missions, social outreach. Even a video for a Christmas program at your church announces to everyone that you are a videographer and a good one. Real esate agents and financial planners like to have video of themselves streamed onto the webistes. Resorts want video tours and promotional DVDs. Then there's the area of training and safety films. Manufacutring companies need videos for trade shows. Join the Chamber of Commerce if you don't already belong and start networking. People will tell people that you do video. Dan

OT: Is it stressful being an event videographer?
Investigated that whole funeral thing. The tribute video idea. Talked with every funeral director in this market of half-a-million. The logistics of doing a video, even a video photo album between death and burial is fraught with stress,---both for family and videographer. My pitch was to sell the video as part of a pre-paid funeral package. Without exception I was discouraged from doing so. Tried to market this to the living,---folks in well-heeled retirement communities. Interest but not bites. Those depressoin-era folks are tight-fisted. That's where I left it. Suppose the next step is to market the idea to the children of the living subjects. A sort of personal biography. Did a sample using a 93 year old aunt as the subject. But haven't gone any further. Video is my main income along with some freelance broadcast journalism. Am trying to grow the corporate part of the buisiness, training-promotional. More money for the effort. Weddings? Was parachuted into a reception-only situation. Thought it would be a good chance to shake down some new equipment and get a feel for wedding world. Client was so problematic,---I gave I returned his money. Weddings are kind of like doing lives sporting events, like hockey. Things happen fast. You can't miss the big play! Stressful is right. Am on call to video actual funerals for one funeral home here. Guess there are no surprises,---and not much to miss so long as you get the eulogy? Still,---I think weddings are a necessary evil to get up and going in this biz. But I'm trying to avoid them.

OT: Norton, the Evil Empire
I just uninstalled AVG and reinstalled Norton. What have I done? Is this malicious software? Really confused here. Had some problems losing files a while back. Initially thought Norton was problem. Seemed to be confirmed by forum folks and my IT guy. But IT guy now says no,--seems Norton wasn't at fault. Is there someone who can capsulize the reason(s) to uninstall this program again?

Douglas, Thanks for,... The Gift. Thanks also for your many hours of teaching through live seminars, forums like this, books and video that I have personal been favoured with. I have a long way to go and muich to learn but a good foundation to build on thanks in large part to your instruction. In this never-ending learning experience I'm thankful for your commitment to helping folks like us, some of whom are trying to carve our new careers. OT: Portable Lighting, what do you have/use, and what do you suggest?
I have purchased two 5 hundred watt Hollywood Softlight kits from Cool Lux. They come with a variety of gels and gel frames. But the thing I like most about them are the reflective hoods that do the job of a softbox, giving an even diffused light. In a second they can be popped off when you need some real intense light or light from a larger set for a larger set. The kits come with dimmers. I also have a Mini Frezzie, with dimmer, with a Cool Lux battery belt for on camera applications and as a key light and for on camera applications. Which brings me to a question. Any suggestions on an affortable AC converter for the Frezzie?

Got interface problem sorted out. Stuff was hiding! As for missing files, changed from Norton to AVG. Norton was dumping veg files into recyle bin. Good program but sometimes too aggresive for video editing applications. Any way the tow truck arrived , as it were, and I'm out of the ditch. Home and dry.

Losing Project
I uninstalled Norton. And installed AVG. Whatever was happening it seem to involved Norton unerase. Stuff was being dumped into recycle bin and corrupted. Again thinking seriously of unhooking workstations from internet.
