Dual core systems & Vegas 6
"Oh, SLI has nothing to do with my selection. ;-) I’m trying to build the quietest PC that I possibly can and that particular model uses a Heatpipe instead of a fan on the North Bridge. I’m trying to eliminate as many fans as possible because my current PC sounds like a Jet plane! That motherboard also got exceptional reviews for stability." John, I just installed the same board, and I agree with you. BTW, what memory are you using, and what size PSU? SLI is a nice option, but useless with Vegas. I might eventually try it, but I'm outgrowing gaming, and the less installed, the better, anyway. Using an X2 4400+ and seeing SUBSTANTIAL gains in rendering time.

That's a good point -- but the disadvantage is that you may get something you don't expect. I suggest making the window full-size so that your JPEG does match what you see. No surprises.

Dropped Frames on Multiple Video Tracks
You've got a reasonable processor and a good amount of RAM, but using only one hard drive -- and a fairly small one at that -- will be problematic. It's always best to have your media on its own dedicated drive, and on a separate channel from the system drive. (This means, don't plug your hard drives into the same IDE cable. ) That's the most obvious critique of your system. What other programs are you running? Virus protection? Firewalls? Anything else going on the background and sucking processor resources?

frame rate question
For computer playback, you can use pretty much any framerate you want. Between 24p and 30p, absolutely 24p is the better choice. The filesize will be smaller, for one thing, and 24p will give you the best quality, because that's the native footage and you won't have to resample artificially (caveats galore there, depending on editing, effects, etc..) The native framerate is always your best bet on that score. So yes, go with 24p.

If you're using a large photo, make the project properties as large as possible -- one of the HD settings, most likely. Then, make your preview window as large as possible. Move it, undock it, resize it, whatever you need to do. The JPEG export will export exactly what's in the preview window, at the quality level and apparent size you see on the screen. So, you want that window to be as large and as high-quality as possible.

Magic Bullet is its own piece of software, whereas, as busterkeaton points out, Celluloid and the ReelPaks use Vegas's own internal mechanism, for a much happier experience. And, the ReelPaks can be used at HD resolutions, where MB will give you an error message above 1024x1024.

Using Bump Map Spotlight.
"It was the closing moments of the movie and, with glow and warming colors, it created a unique nostalgic look. I credit Celluloid for having helped me create it because even though I didn't use Cellulod for the look I learned the possiblities of the bump map FX through studying David Jimerson's FX. Not only can Cellulod give you great ambience but you get an education in the possiblilities inherent in so many Vegas FX and create your own unique variations. " Thanks, Paul! I think the Bump Map is an incredible tool and it's useful for a lot more than just making things look embossed.

60i to 24p, how to avoid judders
I agree that converting to 24p is not the only step in achieving a film look, but the least important? Hardly. I think I was able at NAB to demonstrate what happens when you do everything else but don't convert to 24p . . . you end up with something which looks like cinematic video. As for the judder, if your intent is to convert to 24p for a film look, you need to be thinking about that as you shoot. Shooting film -- and shooting 24p -- requires handling the camera differently than when shooting in 60i, precisely because of the difference in motion samples per second, 24p having only 40% of the temporal information that 60i does. Shooting 24p, you need to have sloooow pans, especially at longer focal lengths, slower zooms, and a general mindfulness of the motion characteristics. You can get away with a lot more shooting in 60i because it's very, very close to the "refresh rate" of the human eye, and it looks real. When you convert to 24p from 60i, you're going to end up with the same motion artifacts that you would if you had shot in 24p originally. So, shoot in 60i as if you're shooting in 24p, and you'll get a much, much smoother transfer. Also, keep in mind that many of the camera movements and techniques that we've come to consider "cinematic" were developed around the use of 24fps film, to get the MOST out of it. If you're using the techniques well-suited for 24p/24fps film, you've already gone a long way toward a film look before you ever get into post.

Other than allowing you to use multiple monitors and display at the optimal bit depth, your video card doesn't do anything for you, Vegas-wise.

How to convert fields to frames?
Whether you set to "Blend Fields" or "Interpolate Fields" depends on how much motion you have in the footage. If there's not much motion, then "Blend Fields" is your better bet and will save you some resolution. But if you have a moderate to heavy amount of motion, then "interpolate fields" will get you smoother motion, and you'll want that, despite having more of a resolution loss. And, I would suggest going into your clip's properties and disabling the resample. I invite you to try Celluloid for one-click conversion to 24p or 30p. Check it out at the VASST website . . .

why does text project bog down system?
400 watts might be a little stingy for that much hardware. Not saying it's your problem, but I'd look at that again.

Newbee: Credit roll speed--Help
I agree with Grazie. The Credit Roll generator has never impressed me, and you're much better off learning to animate still text (in all the wonderfully varied ways Vegas allows you to do so). You'll have complete control and much, much more creative freedom.

24p slow mo
It's not a perfect solution, but you will get glass-smooth slomo on a 24p timeline if you shoot in 60i. What you do is drop the clip onto a 24p timeline and slow it to 40%. This will give you one field per frame, and the motion will be smooth. You will, however, lose up to half your vertical resolution, so it's imperfect. But given the choice between it and the choppiness of 24p slowed down, it's often the better way to go. You'll also get some cover for your resolution loss becuase someone watching already knows it doesn't look the same as the 24p footage -- it's slower. Most will concentrate more on that than they will on the resolution. Certainly, a 60p solution would be superior. But there are no prosumer cams yet on the market which will give you both 24p and 60p. Which camera are you looking at that shoots *only* 24p? I'm not aware of one.

No one is letting Panasonic off the hook here; it's their camera/codec and their business to get it supported. But I'd also venture to say that it's in Sony's best interest to get a feel for what's going on out there, too. Sony has a bit of a reputation for overtly trying to shape the market into what it wants to sell, rather than supplying the market with what it wants to buy. GREAT for Sony when it works, but not so great for anyone when it doesn't. I have no idea how many people use Vegas for its unparalleled integration with 24p (it's simply THE best in its class at it), but I have to think it's a "fer piece" of the usership. Vegas is an indy filmmaker's dream come true . . . and it looks like the HVX200 might be too. I know I'm not alone in salivating at the idea of editing 1080p 4:2:2 in the app I've grown to love. How big the native-24p usership is within the Vegas community, I can't say. (I doubt anyone can.) But as much as I love Vegas, a large part of why I use it is because of that wonderful, unrivaled integration. So naturally, I'm a little anxious to know. I don't NEED to know right away (heck, I'm already using 6, so it's not like I'm holding off purchasing), but I sure would like to. Assuming the HVX200 is everything we expect it to be, I'll be buying it. And I'll choose my editor accordingly.

60i to 24p in Vegas 6 is incredible!
The 24p DVD Architect template renders the MPEG as 60i with pulldown. DVD Architect will remove the pulldown when you drop it in and make a true 24p DVD. You can confirm that easily enough by frame-stepping through one second of the video on your DVD player -- you'll step 24 times.

I was also at the party and had a similar conversation. I'm a 24p NUT and an enthusiastic Vegas supporter, and want very much to continue using Vegas when I move on to the HVX200 (assuming it lives up to its specs). It would be a shame not to be able to do it. Actually heartbreaking.
