OT: Lost my job, anyone have a line on some work?
Grazie, I believe that we'll have to agree to disagree, having a salaried job at a company is the standard method of having a career and earning a living. While I have no opposition to having side work, when the salaried position takes on average of 70-80 with weeks where there were 120-130 hrs a week, there is no time to do anything else. With regards to how over produced it was, you're entitled to your opinion, and that's fine. I learned that until people were involved in the production of one of these events, they had no real understanding of what a unique animal it was. To be clear, the Hard Charge company was not a "production company that did events" it was an event's company that produced a show. Again, thanks for all the kind words and intentions, I'm sure I'll find something soon. But again, feel free in the meantime to send any extra work that might fit my way.

Thanks everyone for your kind words. A few have reached out with kind words through the messaging system here as well, and I have to say thank to those people as well. I do have to say to anyone that might be feeling badly for me, that this job was such an incredible opportunity. I got to work with a dedicated team of people where I gained experience that many people will never have. I would do it again without a doubt. It just stinks that it ended so poorly... Grazie, Your advice... while appreciated in it's intent, is somewhat confusing to me, and seems to be incorrectly given. I was a full time employee of the company that closed and at that time I lost my job. I think maybe you didn't realize that I stopped working for myself and was employed by the company I had been working for, for the last 18 months. And with absolutely zero malice, or any sort of a negativity intended, I also might recommend that if someone has just lost their job, the best way to respond might not be to tell them what they did wrong and suggest they find a different career :)

blue screen when rendering
Blue screens are almost always hardware related. Something wrong perhaps with your Motherboard, Ram, Video Card, or HDD(s). Usually these problems will surface during intensive usage ( Video gaming, Rendering, etc... ), where as just browsing the web, and doing mundane low power tasks will sometimes let them go un-noticed for a long time. Sorry for your trouble

VP13 - Not off to a good "start" (pun intended)
"Do you feel you have to do that with that cooky cloud thing?" Vegas auto saves, and so does Adobe. Although adobe's autosave feature requires you to stop doing anything before it saves, and it inhibits you from working in the application while the save occurs (on large projects this can take upwards of 15-30 seconds) right in the middle of your editing workflow. Not to mention that I've had it set to auto save every 10 minutes and then had a crash and it hadn't saved for the last 3 hrs for some reason, and I lost a lot of work. Everything has it's flaws, and if I hit Save every 5 seconds in Adobe I'd be waiting more than I'd be working. OH! and don't even get me started on audio conforms. I have 1TB of AVCHD Content from any given event. Audio conversions are going constantly in the bg w/o a way to stop them and then they corrupt half way though because you're supposed to be able to work while conforming happens in the background, then you dig in and find the .cfa conformed audio file, and remove it, and then it re-conforms and does it right, but then you load it on another machine and it says oh... let's conform all the audio again, and it starts eating up tons of space on the drive with conformed audio files that it's already conformed before. - Vegas autosaves to a folder in a hidden folder on the pc and I shortcut to that on my explorer so if it ever crashes - there's a crash I was getting with the looksdx.dll (or something like that) in vegas whenever I create a folder while trying to save and I didn't know what was causing it for the longest time). All you have to do is sort by date modified and find the latest one (some random name unfortunately) and open it up and recover most of your work if Vegas doesn't ask you to restore the crash when it opens again. That said, there are strengths to that cloud software as well, and we successfully create shows in it, but believe me when I tell you, sometimes it seems like adobe has their head up somewhere a lot darker and smellier than they do in the clouds... I found the best graphics card for Vegas Pro 12.0
Don't have time to read this whole thing, but to be clear, the Quadro 4000 was very VERY long in the tooth for a long time. It had a very small number of cuda cores vs. many consumer cards. May very well be that ATI is being better utilized than nVidia, but I just wanted to make that clear, and I agree Quadro cards are not worth the money for Video editing. Adobe doesn't utilize ati as well, and also has bugs in the processing with their Open CL encoding. So there is some benefit to a system that's been in place longer. Dave H.

VP13 - Not off to a good "start" (pun intended)
wwjd: Don't be so quick to jump. I Produce several 1 hour national sports shows in the cloud based un-named software you speak of. and believe you me, there are plenty of problems on that side of the fence. Like, randomly making the .mxf format corrupt in every encode they put out in a cloud update that you can't undo that you only installed because it promised to fix a different problem that was irritating you day in and day out. The workflow is not as fast by a long shot ( though they're copying more and more of Vegas every day ). Every time an update with new features is released that will actively save you time and frustration in your edit, it's like playing Russian Roulette with your editing machine because you may or may not be hosed from some other random bug they've introduced making a serious glitch in your show. One time they changed it so that all the GoPro footage interpretted differently than the previous update, and I went back to make a change to a previous project, rendered it out, and everywhere the gopro footage was, it was completely random and out of sync but nothing had been moved or changed. Pick your battles is all I'm saying, because you're not finding anything that's problem free... Oh, and we only use it because the company is all apple based, and we still go through Vegas for the captioning with VASST Caption Assistant because captioning in Adobe is a joke as far as workflows are concerned compared to caption assistant in Vegas Pro. Depending on how the loudness metering is being done, and if there's a simple tool to make it compliant. This will save me valuable time on every show we master out through Vegas. Captioning and audio mastering are always done in there, and I've been having to round trip files to adobe and back to get the files audio compliance correct. Really looking forward to that if it works well, so I can get this all done. Dave H.

Panasonic 4K GH4 Announced
as far as I know, if you apply no fx to it, it will pass through the 10 bit signal, but if you make it process the footage in any way beyond cuts only. Then you need to change to the floating 32bit color space, at which point you can utilize the full 10 bit space. I'm not sure however, if there are any 10bit supported output options from rendering. You may be forced to put the 10bit space to an 8bit space if you process it at all. However most any Delivery formats that are common are 8 bit (though you probably know this). And I've been out of the loop with a new TV show I'm producing for the last year or so, so 12 is still a little foreign to me at an in-depth level, so that may have changed, or I may have been mistaken somewhere along the way here :) Dave

Ok, I can't imagine that you are being serious about this question because it seems quite straight forward to me. Either they were born into money their parents made or managed well, or they earned it themselves by doing something industrious, clever, inventive, devious, or some combination of the above. @OldSmoke: If your maid said that she wanted 60K a year because that's what her friend who was a doctor makes, would you have said yes, we'll pay it because you're just as important as a doctor? Would you have said, I can stay home and care for our home because I make 50K (I have no idea how much you make :) ) and you are asking too much money, or would you have said. There are thousands of people out there, who value their time less than you do yours, I'm glad you value it so highly, but it's valued too highly for me, and I will need to find someone else whom I can afford to pay. If a doctor can earn just as much money doing basic tasks that do not require any additional studying, working, training and maintaining skills, would most doctors become doctors or strive to become better doctors? I'm sure some would still because of the desire to help others, but our world would go into the toilet at a much more rapid pace if those who do things most can't were not compensated for their extra effort/talents/abilities. Most people who live in poverty can do more to try and change it than they are doing, they may need help, and that help could possibly even be in the form of money at times, but giving money to people who don't manage money well, is like giving crack to a drug addict and telling him to take good care of it and saying this is how you take good care of it, here you go... All the good intentions in the world won't change what is almost certainly going to happen to that crack/money. You might say, well then you need to regulate how that money is spent or handled to make sure they do what they are supposed to with it... maybe, but then you have someone saying "you don't have enough money, here's some money that you deserve because you have less. You have to spend it this way and that way and not this way or that other way." Now, not only are you making it so I don't have to earn money to have money, but you're taking away my freedom because I'm now subject to you if I want that easy free money,... and I think everyone wants easy free money :) And not to mention, regulation lends itself to someone making back room deals saying that if they have to spend it on X and not Y, let me encourage you to make it MY X and not my competitors. I believe in helping those who are poor, and I have been poor much of my life by many people's standards, but I am working very hard to change that. It's possible it may all blow up in my face and I may be in ruin, but if I just sit here and wait for people to take care of me, I'm a drain on my friends, family, and community, and in a small part, our world as a whole, and I contribute even less. If it does blow up and I do end up in ruin, I will be pretty much back where I started and I'll start over again if I must. Speaking of which, I need to get back to work so it doesn't all come crashing down around me :) Sorry for the long post, but I'm a pretty opinionated jerk at times ;) I'm still everyone's friend too :) Dave H.

OT: I want my own drone
We've used a similar rig for some interesting aerial shots of obstacles for our TV show, but I'm not willing to fly it during the event day because we had one take off on us once and it went up like 200 ft and then just went hurtling into the ground. Fortunately no-one was there because it was a day that was pre-event, but I was piloting, and using eye goggles, and all I could do was watch it shoot up, and then come screaming into the dirt ( also fortunately it landed in soft dirt and the modular pieces saved us from a ton of repairs ). After that, I was pretty much un-willing to fly it at an event because I think they could probably kill if they did that to a kid or even an adult, they're not light weight with batteries in them. Premiere Pro CC Project file import errors
I don't get any error's with CS6 projects, I just haven't converted any of those to PC first (I work on Adobe mac products in my TV job). I just wanted to see how well I could make some of the work move over to Vegas if I wanted to, but CC didn't seem to play well for me. Dave H.

720p60 was our original intent, but the satelite company required 1440x1080i60 XDCam MXF. So we deliver in that now, but we push out 1080p30 XDCam MXF from Adobe and then we put out the 1440x1080i60 file from Vegas to match their exact delivery requirements. Dave

TV show I am producing using Sony and Adobe
The company was already Adobe'd up when I came in because of the subscription based access, and graphic artists already using other adobe products. I brought in the use of Vegas Pro, mainly I use for putting the segments together, adding captions with the benefit of VASST's Caption Assistant, mixing audio, and outputting the final files with captioning embedded. I have to cut the main content inside of Adobe, and to be honest there are some tools they have in their suites that are better suited for this type of longer form work. Having a tool like Prelude is handy, I'm still learning their media management software, but what I find is that interoperability with the rest of the adobe software makes things better for us as well. What I don't like is the workflow and the way in which you have to work in Premiere. Vegas really is very efficient VERY efficient. I think it would be fully capable for this project, however I've not tried producing a show from Vegas vs. Premiere, I may have to when I get into the off season and have some time. It was a little rough, I had a lot of AE experience, but I had very limited Pr experience, and so I had to cut my teeth a bit as I was cutting my first TV show ever, and it was an hour long show in a sport sub-genre that had never had a TV show produced around it before :) I had approx. 600 hours in 2 months and of those 600 hours, about 215 of them were in the 10 days leading up to our first show launching (there's only 240 hours in 10 days). Fortunately I've learned a lot of time savers, enhanced my workflows, built most of all my graphic templates, and I actually know what I'm doing with the show half the time now :) As for all our cams, we are using everything in 1080p60 and 720p60 and 720p120 (in the case of some of the POV's). Vegas Pro 12 editor teaming with FCP editor?
XDCam are supposed to be files that go between, I have not tested, but if this is your first time on a project with more than one editor, make sure you have a clearly defined look and feel. I've been lead editor on a tv show for the last year, and we had an editor that is not with us after this show due to her lack of ability to work on a team and submit content for review in time. That mad effort more than a few late nights :(

OT: Suggestions for ATV Shooting on TV show
We are using the X-10 arm, and the HD-4000 gimble arm. The best results for riding on the back of the ATV with the vehicle mounted glidecam were when we added a good deal of weight added to the bottom so it wasn't actually balanced, but imbalanced so that the camera didn't tend to move around so much which vehicle speed. The arm was mounted to a vehicle mount, which was mounted to a board that attached the boat seat to a swivel mount for the chair, so the shooter was then able to brace his feet and move the chair and that would allow greater range of movement of the suspension arm, and then the camera was just controlled from the HD4000 bar under the gimble. It was too dangerous to have him wear a vest because the Metal brace that ran the vertical center of the vest and V's at the top would likely have decapitated him if the ATV rolled on a hard surface. So that was right out. Dave

How can I accomplish this effect
two things, One, I would say you probably will be looking at a 3D program more than particular, based on that smoke, I would guess it was probably FumeFX in Max (if you don't have that, you can certainly look into blender, who's particle FX engines are really coming along), and 2nd you would probably get benefit from having something for the model to hold in their hands that gives you a clear motion track point so that you could then move the emission point naturally for the video.
