progressive vs interlaced
Rob, So what is the disadvantage of having a consumer camera like the Canon HV40 that shoots 60i, 30p, 24p (in a 60i wrapper) and native 24p? It will do interlaced and progressive and inside an inexpensive consumer camera. I don't think that one should have to have a professional camera to be able to shoot progressive footage. I think a professional camera should give you better glass, more manual controls, and a better build quality. Just because a camera is considered a consumer camera it doesn't mean we should be stuck with 60i as our only creative option. I believe the idea of interlaced as being "consumer" and progressive as being "professional" is about 5 years outdated. Why not have both options at our disposal?

Have you tried Cineform Neo Scene? Its about $100 and can transcode quickly transcode files to the almost lossless cineform codec. In my experienceVegas has always played well with Cineform.

Lars. I have a question and I promise its not meant to be rude. If you have access to these other NLEs, and you are having good success with them on your system, why are you bothering with Vegas at this point? Is it just a principle issue at this point? I could understand that. If you paid hundreds of dollars for a program, you're right to want it work properly. But it sounds like you are just beating a dead horse here. If you have access to tools that work for you. Why not just use them instead?

Encoded Alpha channel?
If sticking to .AVI you must render to "Uncompressed." Using an .MOV you could render to the ANIMATION codec as well. I have never understood why Vegas doesn't let you render an alpha channel to codecs like lagarith, huffy uv, and cineform that support alpha channels. You can render an .AVI using these codecs in other programs that contain an alpha channel. Does anyone know why?

"and contrary to some published reviews, the Vixias do not record progressive. " This is only partially true, and only for the HV20 and HV30, not the HV40. The 20 and 30 do record 24 discreet frames per second to tape in a 60i "wrapper" but do not insert the normal flags to easily extract the original 24 frames/sec. Through software like Cineform Neo you can do this. It is able to extract the original real 24p video. This is not like the old cinemode on the FX1 or Z1, which created a pseudo 24p from a 60i recording. The HV40 does record 24p directly to tape so the workaround is unnecessary.

Soft focus on SD DVD with HDV-60i footage
Make sure when you render you set your quality to "Best". Leaving it at the default "Good" setting when rendering HDV to SD will result in less than optimal results.

OT: Bias Sound Soap/Sony NR2
I second Izotope RX. I had the lite version of soundsoap, which is good for the price. But RX is in a class by itself. I am just now learning its full capabilities. Someone else said it was like voodoo or magic. I agree. Its just a fun program to use too.

Problem rendering HDV to DVD
Make sure you set you render quality to "Best". Leaving it set at "Good" will leave the video looking soft and lower quality. I made this mistake several times before fixing it. Always render at "Best" if you are changing resolutions, upscaling or downscaling.

Compositing onto a shaky camera
You could first stabilize the footage using something like the Deshaker script. That might make hand tracking the digital display a little easier. Not ideal but could be done as a last resort. How long is the clip? The best way as already stated is to use motion tracking software like in After Effects.

"best" chroma keyer?
Are the Boris FX Light Wrap and Color Match plugins usable inside of Vegas as well? I have found similar plugins inside of Affer Effects and Commotion Pro invaluble for pulling off realistic keys.

Vegas Quake
Please do release it! Just this past week I had to install Vegas 7 on my editing computer just for the purpose of using Quake. I was hoping someone would upgrade it for Vegas 8. Andy, between the deshaker upgrade and now this Quake upgrade, you are fast becoming the go to script guru for Vegas guys.

HDV Pixels and Exporting to AVI
Also remember anytime you convert HD to SD use the "Best" render setting instead of the "Good" setting it defaults to. This is true anytime you will be doing any kind of resizing, panning or cropping.

And for that $499 you could probably build a nice multi-terabyte RAID, capture unconcompressed, and convert to a lossless smaller codec like Lagarith, a motion jpec codec that Vegas plays friendly with, or the built in Cineform codec that comes with Vegas. Still, more work and money than you should have to expend.

Anybody using: Lagarith Lossless Video Codec?
Lagarith's website states that Lagarith can take advantage of multiple processors, while Huffy UV cannot. So on dual or quad core systems Lagarith may perform better than Huffy UV. Eugenia's system used a Pentium4 at 3.06 Ghz with Hyperthreading, so Lagarith may have been less advantagous.

Black Magic Vegas Support - NOT
What about using Cineform NEO HD to capture? They advertise support for live capturing HDMI through the BlackMagic Intensity card into the Cineform codec at 1920 x 1080 10-bit 4:2:2. Cost $499 though. The recently discontinued NEO HDV used to do live capturing though HDMI 1440 x 1080 4:2:2 for about 1/2 the price. Shouldn't have to do that work around in the first place but just thought I'd mention it.

OT: Trying to pick an HD camera
I think all NLEs including Vegas will improve their ability to edit avchd video soon. HDV was troublesome at first to import, edit, and print to tape as well. It wasn't until Vegas 6 that you could natively import and print HDV footage. That's one reason Cineform HD (Neo HD) developed its niche. AVCHD seems to be following the same route that HDV did i.e. no support > support with some limitations (now) > full support. Hopefully soon, avchd editing will be just as painless as editing with hdv, which is still painful for many ;) Then the latest and greatest HD flavor will come out and start the cycle anew.

OT: Trying to pick an HD camera
I've had a Sony VX2000, a Sony FX1, and now 2 Canon HV20's. If the gym is well lit and not dim I'd go with the Canon HV30. I personally would not invest much money for SD equipment like the VX2100 unless low light performance is highest on list of importance to you. Even then I would spend a little extra to go prosumer HD. I personally would stick to tape based for low end cameras. You may save time with the capture to your computer with HDD based cameras but it is seems to be a much bigger hassle to edit and archive. Tape holds up quite well over time if stored properly. You could always back it up to a hard drive as well for insurance. On an SD TV you would probably be better off with a good SD camera. If you never plan on getting an HDTV then get a used VX2100. But I think in 2-3 years you'd regret it because all TVs are going HD and in decent light, the HV30 is far superior to the VX2100 on an HDTV. You won't be able to go back in five or ten years from now and turn footage from the VX2100 into HD.

A video file that V5 can open but V8 can't???
Both clips play fine on my XP Home Edition in Vegas 8.0c. It identifies it as Sony Motion JPEG in the properties. Interestingly, neither clip will open in Vegas 5, 6, or 7 on the same computer. It gives audio, but no video.

The teeth were fake plastic ones like you probably had as as kid. I wasted most of a day trying to make an elaborate werewolf makeup and just couldn't finish it in time. Only had 48 hours total.

Regarding the lighting, I just used compact flourescent bulbs with clamp on work lamps like you find at Wal-Mart or Home Depot. Nothing fancy. Some of the lights were direct while others were bounced. Set ups were very quick and dirty. I shot it while my girlfriend and another friend acted. A total crew of three people. I did the writing, directing, DPed, sound, editing and voice over. The dolly I used was home made with about $30 of material using metal rails mostly. I edited with Vegas. I intentionally over lit each scene to have a little room to dim it as needed in post. Genre: Film de Femme - required a strong female lead Character: Chuck or Chelsea Raynal, Printer Prop: an ashtray Line of Dialogue: "Is that all you've got to say?"

Portable greenscreen for interviews.
One low tech item I've found to be very effective as a portable green screen is using flourescent lime green lycra (Spandex). I have a 4'x7' piece that I got on sale at a fabric store. It requires very little lighting, lights evenly with very little spill and wrinkles stretch right out. It can be taped in place. For fast set ups it is my screen of choice. It can be found on ebay for cheap. I have a fold out portable screen and a 4'x4' piece of the velcro type material but I find myself using the Spandex the most.
