V8 demo requires registration
I tried several times to install and the installer hung near the end each time. I closed out of it wih task master. Then I tried to start the thing and it always asks for a serial number - which I don't have 'cause it's the trial version and it didn't come with one. So, I gave up and unistalled V8 and .net3.0 and visual basic C++.

Multiple Delta 44 / 66 cards?
I haven't actually tried it, but I would imagine you would run into clicks and pops, as one card is locked to Vegas and one is a completely separate clock.

In order to get the sync correct, you would need to sync the word clock from one to the other. This can be done with the 66 using the SPDIF to sync word clock from one master. It cannot be done with the 44.

OT: UAD-1 plugins.. are they really? Waves?
Yes, they are great plugins. If you are looking for plugin EQs and compressors, they are among the best. I did not have success running the VST versions in V7 when I demoed it - I got all kinds of buffer mismatch errors. But, I've been using them in V5 for a long time. I have not tried the neve plugs however. If you are looking for some non-hardware requiring EQ alternatives, then I would suggest trying out Hydratone from http://www.tritonedigital.com/ or perhaps eliosound.

MAJOR Vegas timecode syncing issue
I have had very bad experience trying to get accurate MIDI timecode out of USB MIDI devices. You may want to try a PCI based MIDI card. Or, possibly there is a way to prioritize the USB interrupts in the OS. Also, check to see if something else is sharing the USB port interrupt.

UAD ?
I use them with Vegas 5. I have not had success with V6 or V7. I have not upgraded Vegas since V5 because of this. Since Vegas5 is DX only and UA stopped DX support, I have not used any of their newer plugs, although my initial experiments with DirectiXer seem to indicate that the DirectiXer wrapped UAD VST versions work as well as (and sometimes better than) the UAD DX versions. Recently, I considered buying another UAD card for more plug power. But, PCI has a limited lifespan. Instead, I just purchased more outboard EQ and compression. It cost's a bit more, but it will be useful virtually forever. That said, the UAD plugs are great and a great value. I use them on every production I do.

OK, I've Narrowed It Down
Is it the recording that is clicking or the playback? Does the waveform look correct? Are you sure you have your project sample rate and M-Audio sample rate locked? Are you monitoring through the M-Audio interface (internal mixer)? What if you mute the other tracks and then record a new track - does it work then?

Is Vegas REALLY robust enough for audio work?
I am using Vegas 5 with typical track counts in the 40-60 range. I also use UAD-1 plugins, waves plugins, and convolution reverbs (not on every track). Sometimes the UAD-1 problem can cause severe native CPU munching, but only once I use about 60% of my UAD-1 power. I've tried Vegas7, and I am unable to run the UAD-1 efficiently enough to use it. I'm having many buffer error problems which I don't experience with v5 Also, I have recently done comparisons between Vegas and another app. with tracks only (no plugins) and Vegas consistently does much better on CPU on two of my systems. I'm actually really glad to hear that the UAD-1 problem has been identified and a solution has been conceived. Is there any chance it could be implemented in Vegas 7? If you would tell me that it would be fixed in 7, I would upgrade right now.

Thanks H2000 but I need to keep the project in 24 bit. And thanks again rraud. We won't be doing the mix in Nashville till early next year so I've got some time to work on this. I will definitely let you know how it unfolds. I'm sure that if you were to email jr or the vasst support, they would add the split mono 24 bit for you. JR is very helpful and quick to respond. The good thing about this way of doing it is that there are no surprises with the conversion when you get there. OTOH, the EDL convert sounds very good.

Have you checked out the Trackalizer script: http://www.vasst.com/product.aspx?id=c217cca0-5add-4e90-ba36-caf3e6041ea1 It will export (render) all the tracks in your project. You can render stereo files to multiple mono files (although it's only as 16bit at the moment).

As if that all weren't bad enough, there is no standalone Vegas anymore - only Vegas+DVD. It looks like I'll be sticking to v5 for awhile - it still blows Acid6 out of the water for audio stuff.

"I doubt there will be any. I hope there is continued audio development in Vegas, even if it is secondary to the video stuff. How long do you think it will be until Acid reaches the level of Vegas 5? Another year? Or two?

so how is it working w/UAD now?
I know it wasn't working for me in version "b" (using VST only). Like I said, I can't test "c". I tried to get a confirmation from Sony that it may be fixed so I could consider buying it (I actually did buy "b" and Sony let me return it for refund when I found out it didn't render (they didn't argue)). But, they were not able to give me any response. Of course now I will just wait for Acid Pro 6, but... I assume since Pipeline's is not working that there still are problems (was your DX versions in V5 rendering, Pipe?). And, I agree about the backward compatibility thing from UA - it's lame not to be able to go back to old projects.

Ben, are you saying that version "c" fixed this problem? Because I know version "b" had the problem, and I see nothing in the "c" release notes to indicate it was fixed. Also, I asked customer support and posted here asking if it was fixed and nobody could tell me. I went to demo the "c" version, but my 30day trial of the "b" version had expired.

I am using UAD-1 version 3.9 and Vegas 5. It's working O.K. for me. Vegas6 adds VST capability, but there is a problem in that UAD-1 plugins no longer render with it. So, my answer would be if you need to render any of the plugins, then no it does not work. And if you are buying a new UAD-1, you will probably have the latest software which no longer supports DX. That means you will have to use Vegas6 with the VST versions and will not be able to render.

What about UAD-1 VST plugins? They still do not render in version 6c. Will this ever be fixed? Will project tempo ever be sent to VST effects like it is supposed to be? it kind of defeats the purpose of having VST capabilities without full implementation.
