In addition to the above, bear in mind two things: 1) The Mainconcept encoder does *not* set the streaming bit at the beginning of H.264 encodes, so you will need grab a separate mini-app to do the post-processing on any mp4 files you plan to post directly to the web, and expect for folks to stream them (or play them through progressive download). My recommendation is to use rndware's MetaData Mover - http://rndware.info/products/metadata-mover.html 2) If you plan to push the file to a streaming site (such as Vimeo or YouTube) *your* specific output encode parameters matter less, but you'll have to look at their recommendations for files (data rates, sizes, etc) they're willing to upload and transcode for playback from their site.

Create a MP4 streaming file??
There's also an Adobe Flex mini-app that will put the streaming bit at the front of an MP4 file without re-compressing, but I can't lay my eyes on it at the moment. There's also an MP4 Metadata mover here: http://rndware.info/content/MetadataMover

Sony Webbie HD - Please don't laugh
I have to echo Spot here - just picked up a Sony Webbie HD at Best Buy for $160, and love it for what it is... I use it all the time for little web one-offs. As with any of these "pocket HD" camcorders, your lighting has to be good to get a decent shot. If I need something higher-def I borrow/rent a friend's P2.

That thread 1) didn't come up when I did a forum search, and 2) doesn't answer my question. I'm asking about the specific salience of distinguishing between Intensity versus Decklink products - or whether they can be considered to be "the same" from an application support perspective.

OT: Apple Spin Doctoring Ad Wizards set straight
First, you won’t pick Vegas or Premiere because a quick search on Monster or Career Builder would show you that there aren’t many people looking for people with those skills (unfortunately). That leaves you with Final Cut and Avid. With budgets being tight, you choose Final Cut on Mac since you can find editors as needed and the price per seat won’t break the bank. That’s just the reality of it. Here's another bit of reality - a *MAJOR* studio here in LA LA Land bought 20 seats of FCP - and shortly thereafter replaced it with Avid Nitris systems. The reason? Support... they just couldn't get the support they demanded with FCP. So, they paid the premium for Nitris to have a body in the room when an editor couldn't figure out where the comezouta points to the goezinta... Everyone's needs, wants, and budget are different... I'm content with my choices (including a solid assortment of Mac-friendly tools so I can play well with others)

You can use an RL circuit (like in a theremin instrument) or optical sensor as a trigger - several DIY projects around that in MI mags. It would be interesting to use a MIDI trigger and an environment like Plogue Bidule to handle start/stop/fades that way... Hmmm... [yes - I'm a poster child/adult for ADD]

OT: Apple Spin Doctoring Ad Wizards set straight
Well - I have my own cherished opinions on Steve Jobs and Apple, which echo many of the sentiments expressed here (except perhaps without as much vitriol). But I think what's more important here is to focus on the long-term strategy of Microsoft and the astonishing variety of developers and hardware manufacturers that they support. The guys at Sonic Foundry/Sony are a great example of that. It's definitely a double-edged sword, to have the kind of flexibility that the PC platform provides also means that those users more often than not need to have some tech savvy. I'm a geek - always have been - and that suits my nature. People that have an aversion to that side of technology can pay the premium that Apple demands - I don't have any qualms with that. There was a time when I would allow myself to get caught up in the endless debate over platforms/business models and whatnot, but these days I'd rather just "pick a side" and do the creative stuff I was put on the planet to do...

Latest Vegas update is? Upgrade cost is?
I've seen notes online of PowerDirector7 being able to use both ATI's "AVT" and nVidia's CUDA - but I don't know whether it's leveraged for time line playback, rendering, or both. I just had a conversation with a Macolite buddy of mine who said FCP leverages the GPU, but I didn't get any details. BT Video Storage and Use? NAS Buffalo?
I have one of these devices - added a second 500GB USB drive to it that acts as a mirror. It gives me some redundancy without hard coupling. It's been very nice to have Gigabit throughput - a definite upgrade from my Yellow Machine, and cheap, too.

I think I just answered my own question - looks like the Export to Web function in QuickTime sets the index in the right position (at least as far as the error message in QTIndexSwapper tells me).

I have QuickTime 7.5 Pro for windows - just curious if anyone has tried the "Export for Web" function and how that has behaved for them? Does it set the index for streaming - or is it just a straight-up data/size converter? I don't mind putting QTIndexSwapper on my machine for this functions, but if I've already got something in the can that will do the trick, then I'm not going to mess with it. TIA

Deleted and re-installed both Vegas 8 and DVD Architect 5 and everything seems fine now - probably a corrupted codec DLL...

Wow. OK - this was *not* about rendering an AC-3 file. This was about importing an MPEG-2 file that was rendered in Vegas 8 (using the Main Concept profile for DVD A) *INTO* DVD Architect 5 I reinstalled both Vegas 8 *and* DVD A and like magic everything works again. This was not - I repeat - *NOT* about AC-3 encoding...

Thanks for the stabs guys. This isn't an AC-3 rendering issue. This is a video import issue. I'll revert to DVDA 4.5 and will give that a try.

MS Windows 7 demoed, in stores next year
Been playing with a large touch screen product for the last few months, basically a large tablet-like computer. What impresses me most is that my arms get tired and the screen gets smudgy. Love that. Gorilla Arm - it's been around as long as the days of the telephone switchboard. The irony is that when you put the screen in an ergonomic position for the hands/arms, you lose the ergonomics of the back/neck/head/eyes.

For what it's worth - I thought blink was being ironic. If he was being catty, then that's just foolish. One $400 PS3 is equal to 25 nodes of Blue Gene? Holy Cow, those game developers have a lot of headroom to explore...
