Good primer/FAQ for Vegas audio?
I'm not sure 'vegas" audio is going to be your hurdle...i'd say it's audio basics that could use the focus. I find Vegas is superb when working with audio, getting a mix for mastering, I started with it since vers 1.0 when it was born as an audiocentric app only. I still prefer it over my PTools 7.3/7.4 hands down. It's the many goofball clients that desire the PTools name basically, so that's why it's there. *I use Vegas 6 for all audio only (tracking) and 7 for video. The basics (before vegas) you should focus on is the recording and chain. A great mic to--->great preamp - ---> a nice rec device or a/d converters (could be a nice portable recorder or home studio setup of many types/budgets). These are the basics, a mixer is nice (monitoring/routing/flexibility), but the pres, mic(s), and usage are the meat and potatos. So I'd focus on 1-2 applicable mics for your work (condensors are probably what you need) , a nice preamp (usually not cheap for good ones) and a good signal chain (quality cabling and A/D interface) to the recording device. The rest is practice with the above and getting to know vegas after you put it in to mix. There's lots of usable/musical plugins to finalize a mix (waves plugin suites, BT, PSP, etc.) and quite a bit of so-so/crappy plugs. I think it's better $ spent getting a quality suite of plugins rather than several+ cheapie/so-so ones personally. Pre's: check out DAV systems, True systems, API, audient, Crane Song, a few Trident models (many more...etc.) for some nice pres. But maybe even some simpler/affordable pres will do the job? Like the RNP (nice, small, effective 2ch pre - http://www.fmraudio.com/RNP8380.htm). Maybe back it up with their lil compressor too (RNC: http://www.fmraudio.com/RNC1773.HTM). Get good/great audio and levels in...and the rest is just easier.

ot: screen capture program?
Another vote for Adobe Captivate. Pricey but worth it, espec for those creating tutorials/lessons. But AviScreen would probably fit your purpose just fine (freeware).

OT: What are the best movies on Blu-Ray
C'mon, It's just more plastic crap for the landfill. Fact is, the kid's gonna remember a day of going out/outside and having fun with uncle over ANY pos flick you can buy (dvd or bluray). Just telling it like it is. You call it negative, I call it an honest tip. Heck, film the day and give him a DVD of it if it has to be TV/video related. As an uncle of 10, ...the plastic crap piles up. Especially rehashings of feature films on disc. Just ask the parents. Am i saying the pirates trilogy is aimed at morons though?... Well....ummm...let's stop there.

telling a false story -- I'm intrigued. Please explain what you mean by this. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Agreed, but not bad for a ONE TIME watch and return. Any more than that and it's time to exchange some bluray discs for CD's...cause you don't know the beatles. Reharmonization/re-arranging isn't the hard part (not at all)...it's writing the original that takes work and risk. Of course we need artistic visuals to wrap a film like this in...one simply cannot enjoy the original beatles music or live footage unless it's a$$-packed with teen stars, animation, and superimposing aren't along for the ride. (Just my opinion, you may not agree.)

1. Any of the animations 2. The Pirates of the Carribean Series 3. Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds: Live at Radio City 4. Black Snake Moan 5. Elton 60: Live at Madison Square Garden 6. Galapagos (as good as Planet Earth) 7. Blade Runner ------------------------------------------------- just my opinion but... OUCH! On all these with the exception of #6 and 7. Especially the inept Carribean series. If those weren't hyped-dog poo I don't know what is. So this child (are we right in assuming this is a child?) can't enjoy any movies on DVD?...it has to be Bluray eh? This is one child that could probably use a football/baseball/skates/etc., and some time OUTSIDE with his uncle over any blu-ray anything.

they had vegas STUDIO 7 & now have 8 pro. ---------------------------- Yeah I know, I'd say to that (since they bought vegas 8), go get Vegas 7 (call sony support?) and utilize 7d or e until sony gets 8 together (or "if"). Because to me foremost is the best stability and ease of getting work done, espec over the features of 8 (which ain't wowing me so far).

Yes i need to upgrade to a bigger hard drive. im thinking atleast 500GB ------------------------------------- Actually, you really want to "add" more hd's. A nice simple setup for you might be: all apps/os on C: then 2 or more large-fast hard drives to store/work with media. Unless your c drive is rather old/slow...in which case upgrade that too (again: apps/os, etc on C: - add more physical drives for media). Also make sure your killing any auto starting progs (see start/run/msconfig and start/run/services.msc for a good start on that.

I'd stick with vegas 7d (or e) and get to work, there's just too much wrong with 8 right now. You'll be debating back and forth here with sony fans ...and maybe you'll find some resolve to get ya by...but I just think you'd be more happy and content using 7 until Sony get's their sh8t together with 8 (which may be near never at this rate). Def getyourself at least 1 or more fast, large sata or ide drive(s) to work with (didn't see that mentioned). With SD video and utilizing .png for images, you really shouldn't have too many probs with 8.

Samsung Monitor Suggestions??

I appreciate all of your input and help.Thanks, Ray <<< The 245BW has it's own little issues (like the hunt for the S series), plus most people who say they can't calibrate them usually have installed some of that "magictune" crapola or whatever. They aren't "awful" really (at least in regard to some overblown reviews from customers who probably don't know jack sh*t)..they aren't really the greatest either. J. Gladell is correct in hinting it's not the bees knees in monitoring, (although I don't mind the 226cw we have here which is quite similar) and steering you towards some higher priced models that might better suit the needs. But, personally I'm not impressed with ANY of these flatpanels yet...in any price range. Right now imo, I'd say at first (and at least) incorporate a quality CRT (your choice in size) for a 2ndary monitor (or use a working existing CRT you have), and add a flat panel of choice/budget if you really want for your pri mon. You then have different references to work with. Put up with the CRT bulk but they're still the better monitoring option compared to the flatpanel sh*t that's out there. *If you're editing on a laptop? Yikes (possibly the worst flat panel offenders out there). BTW: if you ever find out you've hired an editor who chooses working on a laptop, RUN - do not walk away from them.

Samsung Monitor Suggestions??
If you're set on the lower-priced Samsungs then maybe look at the 226CW (gaurenteed "S" series essentially). I have one on a system and it's ok (nothing to write home about though, you should definitely be facing the system straight on if using one during editing when using most of these flat screens). IMO, nothing beats a nice big CRT still (and if you can, an added TV monitor for testing). I know, it's nice to do away with the bulk though. Most of these flat screens are so-so in comparison (just my opinion) - but it's still doable. I'd also suggest avoiding using/installing the magictune (magic anything) with any of these models. I think it's akin to your choice in audio monitoring, you want to get to know and learn how your monitor translates to playback with other devices (no matter what monitors you're using).

Who has switched From Tape
David Jimmerson, This is a msg board. There was a post made by a person named Bit of byte. There are many replies that follow. The reply from me is my opinion in hopes to help answer the question posted. The short reply to you on this would be: I could care less what you prefer, I wasn't replying to you. If you prefer to utilize expensive and limited flash mem then great. I can only offer a response based on what I've seen in use and what my friends who are out with cam in tow even more than I experience. As for the overblown malarky builiding in some replies ....making it seem like (suddenly) 1 out of every 2 tapes you buy are going to fail; well, I think another real world reply is fair to offer. Don't you? or should we invent a bunch of BS failure rates just to help make room for today's latest? Now IMO (re-read the "IMO"), it looks like a lot of hard sell building up (or maybe justification of a purchase, etc.)... guiding another to play guinea pig to the latest (yet not necessarily greatest). Hence, why I replied with MY opinion and take, which happens to favor tape over flashmem right now. It was not intended to demean you and your choice in any way. I'm saying that when we take an honest A/B with tape vs. flash mem, we really should cut out some of the BS of overblown tape failure rates (that interestingly now seem to be such a problem to those who purchased todays these tapeless consumer/prosumer cams), As well, maybe we shouldn't gloss over the fact that mem cards are FAR from infalliable. I've had plenty of them take a dirt nap in their rather short life span. Many have. So, if you want to read it as my telling some user/all users here what is good - what is bad, that's not my problem...it's yours. Or maybe your suggestion is somehow more valid than mine (just because you said so btw), or maybe you're being defensive about your latest purchase/choice, or maybe you really do manage to have issue after issue with tape based cams?... i dunno, that's your problem. In the end the reply is my opinion and experience - not yours. Capice? I'm happy you're happy with getting away from tape. I'm saying IMO it ain't there yet and I can't recommend it.

Boy, some of you must not take basic care of your transports (or are trying a bit hard to justify one's latest purchase?)...cause I've only seen tape issues on a rare occasion. Even then it was a quick dropout at best. Of course, using a single tape over and over past it's suggested use isn't what anybody would consider wise. But some of these replies are reminiscent of the hopeful, nerdy BS in "having to move to BlueRay to thoroughly enjoy/see a film". Do you really think flashmem is ironclad?...if so I've got several dead units you can buy. Anyone care to reiterate the price of the 32gb flash? What will it be in '09? Is 32gb even close to enough anyway without driving you bonkers worrying about space with any more serious projects? I think the answer is still staring the consumer/prosumer right in the face - go price any tape (even the high quality). Then add up flash mem cost vs. their limited length (and then factor in how you're handling/carrying the extra flashmem - another worry when you're out on a fun trip/whatever. They aren't infalliable, not at all). Most signs point to tape still being the smartest choice. Yes you have to take the time dumping it over, but come on...is this really that difficult or strenuous? Do you REALLY need to get that same Disneyworld or magic Mountain crap into your editor a bit faster than tape?...at the expense of limited mem space? * not that those places aren't fun/valid...just comparing to another "Galapogos" and the like mentionings. IMO, tape still makes the most sense. Utilize it until alternate mem options grow into it's own.

Then there are the young people. It's a joke for anyone to believe that they care about HD content that much. This generation is into portability. Tiny Ipods, Cell Phones, etc. Most are perfectly content with watching video on the tiny screen of a video Ipod or a PSP as long as they can take it with them. They are watching the program and not the device itself. Nor are they concerned with the technical specs of the video some of us are obsessed with. -------------------------------- 100% spot on! And really, we're still in the beginnings of mobile/portable generation (and already it's impressive - to me at least). is it fair to compare the sd to hd slice in time against the span of audio entertainment... records: i know it's just personal opinion but to me nothing beats pulling out a record, dropping the needle, seeing and reading a nice big album cover. Nothing made you really listen longer/better than when you had to do some work for your music (playing records/45's). I kinda feel sad for the new gen who didn't experince this. I think a person enjoys the music more fully, it's a complete experience - inadvertantly more engaging. But oh for it's arch enemy - the sun ;( tape: mobile audio! well i was never a big fan per say I had my fair share of classics that would eventually get eaten requiring the old finger in hole winding downtime. * sun will win in a fight here too ;( CD: Introduced the "new and improved" (ugh) way of listening: hear a few seconds...FF...few more, skip, skip track, skip track). Or you could argue it started with consumer tape players (but even then it was work to do so). mp3/etc. players: same listening problems/features of CD,... but now you've got playlists, you're now carrying enough tunes in a single unit for a road or world tour (and then some). *same now applies to the many portable units with video. * yes, overall radio/sat-radio is that bad (barring some talk radio ;) in terms of video which one is HD against all this? I'd say at best it's like 8-track moving to cassette tape (minus the length of life). Just enough wow to entice and change, yet not enough to remember or care too much about. That's just me, you might have a different answer.

Well, we'll see. "I" just don't feel 10 years is realistic. Comparing VHS's lengthy run isn't an example at all. The move from DVD (more than acceptable quality and price/perf) to HD/bd isn't even in the same ballpark as the switch from a VHS to DVD. VHS to Tivo/dvr's is another of the more recent in terms of interest and use. So the comparison even here with a simple screencap, as much as it might bother any 'philes" here, is quite realistic. The necessity, gains in quality and ease of use, and plain old 'wow factor" of all things HD isn't there. Not sure it ever was (and as for all these "new features' HD offers (makes a fart noise with mouth). Of course, there's always "forcing" new customers into all the HD hype (it usually doesn't last however. I believe the reality of ease of use will come into play sooner than 10yrs).

I do understand the "desire" for those in the field to hope it will be, I just see it moving (rather quickly) towards the ease factor more than definition. It's very much like the ease of dig audio over cd, barring any back and forth about fidelity differences.

let's see... i can see the film/show on dvd just perfectly. No need to buy some overpriced HD players. No need to re-purchase the films. I can rip my dvd movies to put on my new phone or portable media device for travel/etc. Hmmm...this one's easy. No need for the BD/HDDVD. It's kind of like CD's now, most people get a cd (or now, buy the dig tracks for less) and boom...off it goes into the i-younameit. And you don't see this coming with video? Personally, I understood right away the point of the comparison, Ithink it made perfect sense.

BD Licence Fees--Spot?
Real World possibility. A school asks me to tape a performance of the "King and I", A license to videotape is paid ($300). The cast is large and 100 orders are taken for Blue Ray disks. (Iknow this will be a year down the road.) I find a small order replicator. Will he tell me that I am required to pay the $1585 per title fee? ------------------------------------------------- Great! A bad high school/college musical IN HI-DEF. THAT'S necessary!! Thank God for HD! Without it, i'd miss the pockmark in Russel Crowe's cheek in the hi-def release of A Beautiful Mind 2: Armageddon. Discs...way of the dodo soon imo.

Yeah Blink, and Sonic the Hedgehog never looked better!! Plus chicks love a guy with a game console sitting by their tv. All to see some HD edits? Can I ask "why" it's so necessary to spend the $300+ to view your HD on your game consoles? Isn't the monitoring setup on your systems enough? Xbox/PS3...both look uggin fugly unless hidden. Just kiddin' around, enjoy the box! Does that thing play asteroids or pong? Because those are the only games that matter (still). * I still think Intellivision kicks these new fangled systems rears (more gameplay in the games). The disc and numberpad controller rules!!

ISSUES: NEED HELP DESPERATELY
How come nobody is disecting the hardware end? it was and has been working fine for a long while, nothing has changed....suddenly he's having bad sluggishness/problems. Yes, do get rid of Norton (get AVG free - better and still a small footprint)...but it's time to focus on the system. System probs aren't as rare as you hope them to be I'm afraid...yet the problems can be as random as all hell. First I'd list all (yep - ALL) your system parts here so people can better help. Exact model #'s and vers #'s. What slots all cards are in, etc. Then in with the easier - Blow out and vac all dust inside there Then check drivers (audio, mobo, etc.). Reload and see what helps. I've repaired some cases where a mobo/chipset driver needed to be reloaded after somehow getting corrupted. Then time to check hard drives (hate to say it but quite likely for odd sort of sudden sys issues), it could be the system drive or any of your record/work drives (I'd start with the sys drive - backup now with acronis or whatever you use). A pain but...hey that's why they're called problems. You'd be amazed of the random/weird probems an "about to go" power supply will cause. Test with another if you can. And (a bummer) same goes with motherboards (another likely cuplrit with probs you're describing) - caps can fail/leak, connections worn, random who knows what's caused by blackouts/brownouts or the like. Having your sys on a good batt backup can pay off. Save all work as one or more of these probs would probably require a fix then reinstall to get back on the right track. For some reason I'm getting the vibe this is sys related. Then again maybe he solved it and it wasn't (didn't read all replies).

No Render At All on QuadCore
I'm suspecting more of a system/setup issue by chance...could be an I/O issue. Did you put this sys together and install the OS and all applications? Are you sure your hard drives are setup properly?...raid used anywhere 9and if so all cntrlr drivers up to date and settings are verified? Tough but it could be a failing/bad piece of hardware somewhere in there (from mobo to hard drives...you'll have to go through it all now). if you didn't build/insytall this sys I would learn how and redo things yourself (if you don't know how then I always say "it's time to learn". Knowing how just adds to your arsenal of knowledge in toubleshooting and resolve. Know your BIOS and proper settings for your hardware. Know your ide/sata and onboard raid settings, ram settings, etc..etc. Know your mobo's PHYSICAL pci/etc slot sharing layout and avoid any add-in cards for the latter shared slot (for good measure). So basically, if you can't figure out where the problem is over time or have no luck diagnosing if/where Vegas 8 is the cause...then I'd do a complete re-install from OS to final applications.
