Congrats to "The Craving Heart"
Nine well-deserved nominations for this amazing film. Thought I'd chime in my kudos, too. Shoestrings and duct tape are fine, but the story (and its presentation) make the real difference here. Stan, I can't wait to see what's next for you. And I sure hope a lot of people get to see this film -- it needs to be seen (and heard ;-) ) JPF

green screen - paper or cloth?
I like the one from Photoflex myself. Folds up nicely and works great. green on one side, blue on the other. JPF

PowerPoint to VIDEO
You can just save the still out from PPT to the PNG format and import them to Vegas. If you don't need animation, this works great. I've also "re-created" PPT slides using Vegas tools which often work better in a video than simply using the PPT slides as is. I'll throw a Digital Juice Jumback in, animate text, and otherwise make it look better than PPT could ever hope to be! JPF

Noise Reduction experience
It is a great tool. However, it should be used as the final step after you've exhausted other noise reducing tools. For example, AC can often be attacked with just EQ -- filter out the lows. If that doesn't do it, some expansion or noise gating may suffice. If all that doesn't get you the right sound, then use the Sony NR tool. There is a free d/l, but it has beeps in it to render using it useless. JPF

What version of Vegas do you use ?
Use V7, but still have V5 and V6 in case a question comes up that needs to be answered. Also found I have V3 on a very old computer. My how far we've come .... JPF

DVD Rip
V6 will grab the VOB file for you from a homegrown DVD. Go to File > Import > DVD camcorder disc and follow the prompts. You can then add the file to the T/L, edit, and re-render away. There will be quality loss! JPF

effects only on one event not entire track
A non-realtime effect is a destructive effect ... meaning you add it permanently to the sound file. Personally, I find that bad workflow. However, adding audio to a track, using the effect you want, and then rendering the track with effects makes sense. This way your original media stays intact, and you have the 'frozen" track (with FX) that frees up the proc to do other things. JPF

Vegas - Difference to Acid, & Protools?
I feel all three are useful. Acid for music comp, Vegas for audio post and final mix, and Sound Forge for mastering (and noise reduction). They all work together quite nicely (especially with the Edit Source Project tools in Vegas). JPF

Ditching Phantom AudioTracks
You must sweep that project media pool if you delete tracks from T/L ... they stay there otehrwise, and vegas wants to find 'em! JPF

a few very basic questions
If you make a time selection, by drawing it out above the ruler, you can easily make a double-sided edit with the split command. Delete what you don't want and the press the F key for a track-nased ripple edit. JPF

Do I need a preamp for this?
Both Samson (CO1u) and Blue (Snowball) make USB-based mics that don't require a preamp ... plug 'em in like a USB device and record. Decent mics for VO work in the 'round $100 range. JPF

Automatic 1.5 second crossfades throughout?
On the Options > Prefs > Editing tab you can set a default length for crossfades when you add media at the same time, if that helps. JPF

Best way to mix a soundtrack?
To the level suggestions offered above, I would add EQ, too sometimes on the VO track to bring out speech with a boost 'round 2250 Hz 9again use your ears!) with the Track EQ. A subsequent cut in the same area on the music track with EQ can help things "sit" better. JPF

Some decent ones ship with Cinescore, too. And if you can find the old Audio Anywhere product from Sonic Foundry, there was a whole disc of this material in it! JPF

OT: AM Radio Simulation?
Actually, the free Vinyl plug-in from Izotope is great for making your tracks sound like old recordings, AM, too. Grabbing a channel switching Sound Effect and layering it with messed up audio works well. There are also plugs in Forge, Amp Mod and Dist that can really wreck your audio as needed. JPF

Survey - How many use Media Manager?
It's a powerful tool, very useful, but takes some time to program right. I kind of like the way it catalogs as you go (an option in MM Prefs). After this first round of Vegas Certification, I plan on using it to catalog all my ACID loops and other stock resources on a new media drive. Using the common tag library will shorten time and make the searches much more fruitful! JPF
