Improve quality of captured Hi8
I use a hi8 as a second camera. I find that with a little color correction - filmed primarily indoors with either halogen or with stage lighting - the picture looks pretty presentable. I have only used the sharpen filter a couple of times when it was really needed. Good Luck Mike

Camera recommendation
I have a GS120. Great little camera interms of color, focus, and durability. It can also take low resolution still pictures while recording video. Not professional as the higher priced used ones but reliable and quality. In the right price range with money left over. An especially nice feature is the top loading tape. If you are folming from a tripod it can not be beat. I was taping a concert last night and the others in the area were quite amazed at how quickly I could change tape. Good Luck

Vegas Did It; AVID Couldn't
I have done that at work a few times. For the editors unwilling to consider new thngs it upsets them greatly to have someone not an editor show them how easy it is with a relatively inexpensive program that runs on rather inexpensive computers. More open minded editors are instant converts. Another interesting thing is that after Vegas solves the first problem, the question "Can Vegas do that" becomes a popular problem solver.

MAJOR DVDA HELP NEEDED!
This is how I set up my play alls. Another nice thing is that you can make markers on one instance of the clip, save them and then recall them for all of the rest of the clips in the project. This works good for me since I always forget to make the appropriate chapter markers in Vegas.

setup
I use USB2 and Firewire drives. I prefer the USB drives just because I have had the firewire disappear in the middle of a render. It was still there, still functioning but the computer lost contact. Has never happened with the USB.

still image seems to jitter in final product
The project I just completed had a number of high resolution images (from a 6 - 8 mega pixel camera). Applying .001 gausian blur cleaned up most of the problems.

preparing for streaming video
I use procoder express for the same reasons. Presets and no thinking involved. My 8 - 10 minute videos usually end up at about 12-16MB or so. I have only had one user (I have about 200 regular visitors) unable to watch the streaming video. I send him links and he downloads.

Rendering Video
One thing I do to speed render times is to render only the avi files in Vegas. I then render (or is it transcode) using Procoder to the WMV, MPEG, or MOV formats. Much faster. Another thing I have found when using moving backgrounds and certain effects (Boris or any similar thing not native to Vegas) is to render the smaller file to AVI and include the rendered version on the timeline. A set of moving backgrounds I purchased are 780*486. Using these in Vegas made the renders horrible. Taking the 10 second loop, rendering to Vegas AVI, and then using the looped background reduced the increased render time to almost nothing. This probably is old news to experienced users but saved me a lot of time once I discovered. Hope this helps.

OT:Cannot stream video now
I had an issue with spyware causing a similar problem (I do not remember if the media player specifically shut down but many other components of IE had issues). In the end I had to wipe the disk and reinstall windows xp.

If you have Vegas 5.0 that came with the Boris Graffitti LTD you can also use a prepared lower third from that program.

great find, yoo hoo
Chris also has a book and a video tutorial available. Book through Vaast and video through Class on Demand. I had worked with boris FX and graffitti for a few months but did not understand it until I saw Chris do a few things on his video. An example you can see really explains a lot more than the 800 page manual that comes with the program. His book is also an excellent reference although I learn better watching. Good luck with the computer you saved a lot more than the $350 you spent.

OT: Burn/print discs
I have done it both ways with out problem. You will have to let the newly printed ones dry befor burning though. Greatest option is printing disks while others are burning. Good luck

using dual monitors
It was a dual output card, I have to admit I do not remember the model. It was on clearence and I asked the guy for the least expensive option (I wanted to try it before getting a more expensive card). Might have been a radon 5000 but I am not positive. The software that came with it was not real good but wondows XP does not need additional drivers for it. The cheap one worked and I kept it.

using dual monitors
Dual monitors really make the process quicker. I installed them with a $50 video card from CompUSA. Once you have dual you will never go back. Good Luck

faster montage work flow
I downloaded Ultimate S last night from the VASST Site but I do not know if it will do what you need. It is great for photo motion and for setting general parameters for the montage though (transitions, length, etc). I suspect others who have used it more than a few hours one night can tell you if it can help you. Good luck
