HOT! Need an MP4 Solution...
For the best quality achievable at low bitrates for the web, I haven't come across a better encoder than x264. It's the encoder used in Handbrake and some other free software. It's also used in MediaCoder which has a free version and a pay version. I've never been able to get an mp4 encode straight from Vegas look as good as an x264 encode at low bitrates (~768Kbps).

Dealing with banding in fades on YouTube

VP11 Benchmark on GT 430
@Red Prince: If they stated the default memory speed was 1800MHz then that probably means the memory was clocked at 900MHz (the same as your Zotac).

Does Vegas v11 support your nVidia card?
It makes me wonder then what Vegas 11 is doing under the hood or is there a much bigger overhead in using OpenCL instead of CUDA on NVidia cards.

@Sebaz: With your overclocked hexcore I could well believe the GT430 might be a bit slower on one event with just one effect applied than just using the CPU, but it should still be able to manage realtime performance.

@Marton: I'll think you'll have to look around for a bit more evidence before deciding. I don't have Vegas 11, but I do have a GT 430. In Premiere it provides a significant boost to performance with a number of accelerated effects on the timeline. I would find it hard to believe that the card is SO inferior to the GTS 450 unless there is some other issue affecting performance (or the CPU it's paired with is a monster by comparison).

Alternative to Canon 5D and 7D quality?
You might want to check out www.eoshd.com if you interested in the GH2. The guy that runs the site loves that camera and there is plenty of info about it in various articles.

Nikon D5100 on order
sRGB and AdobeRGB in the options are colour space profiles. AdobeRGB has a larger colour gamut than sRGB (sRGB is a monitor/internet oriented colour space). This option should only have any impact on JPEG images, not RAW (NEF in Nikon's case).

YouTube, levels and monitors, a simple test.
I think the 275.36 driver is a Quadro desktop driver and the 266.58 is a Quadro notebook "Verde" driver. I Imagine that the notebook driver has extra power management features. It's a bit poor that the NVidia driver widget can't make the right choice. Hopefully no lasting damage was done.

Ok, I'm definitely not seeing what you are. The letterbox is black in the Youtube page, at full screen, and if I playback in MPC-HC or VLC.

I thought we were talking about Youtube and media player levels expansion, not the Vegas preview window (which isn't affected by the Nvidia card video dynamic range setting btw).

I do have "Dynamic contrast enhancement" turned off because it has done some odd things visually in the past (driver issue perhaps).

Originally the default was "video player settings" which resulted in no expansion in VLC or Quicktime (MPC-HC playback was fine) and most videos looked a bit washed out. I changed it to "Nvidia settings" with full (0-255) dynamic range when I got a bit of advice from another forum some months ago. Since then every video has played back fine in terms of contrast.

VLC player only expands YUV on playback if the graphics cards video dynamic range setting is 0-255 (unless there is another setting hidden away inside VLC I've never found). Same thing occurs in Quicktime. By altering the video color settings in the Nvidia control panel I can turn the expansion behaviour on or off for both players. The WMV codec expects to see ComputerRGB luminance levels (0-255) when encoding as opposed to StudioRGB levels (16-235). Does that clarify my statement?

From what I recall neither VLC or Quicktime player expand levels internally, unlike some other players. To get levels expansion in VLC or Quicktime, video dynamic range has to be set to 0-255 by the graphics card driver. There is a setting for that in the Nvidia control panel (can't speak for ATI cards). Edit: If you render the levels test as WMV, no levels expansion is applied on playback, since the codec is designed for ComputerRGB levels (unlike an mp4 render which is expanded).

Perhaps this should be mentioned to avoid some potential confusion: Youtube doesn't actually expand the luminance in the video itself, the expansion happens at playback on your PC.

Below is a link for Nick Hope's article on video uploads to Youtube. I think you are seeing what you are supposed to be seeing in that video. It's hard to draw any conclusion from it since we don't know what format was uploaded in the first place. Also it's one clip, not two separate clips with different adjustments The thread below helped me understand the process with display and output levels in Vegas.
