Video format for Smart phones
The files from my video camera are pretty big. Mediainfo identifies them as MPEG-4 AVC (Level@4.0) 1920x1080 at 17Mbps. The quality is so good I use it sometime for cutaways and "b' roll inserts and drop them right on the timeline of Vegas Pro. If I want to render something for the phone I use the closest setting to this I can and they play great. Last time I did something to play on the phone I think I used the Sony MP4 render at 1920x1080 30p at 16Mbps but this gives large file sizes which you don't want. You may try this using a custom template and adjust the bit rate to see how the quality holds up and where the tradeoffs might be. Kent (Phone is Galaxy S3)

OT Backup software-Macrium Reflect
I've used Acronis since version 8 and found it easy to use. However, the one time I really needed it, the backup was corrupt even though I verified it after creation. Use Macrium Reflect (free) now with no problems. Kent

OT: Tascam DR40 on Amazon $123
I've been using the DR-40 for over a year now and it is outstanding. The build quality compared to my Zoom H4 is like day and night. Don't think I've even turned on the Zoom since I got the DR-40. I paid $199 for mine from B&H and thought it was a bargain but at this price may have to pick up a couple of more. Kent

Adobe giving away CS2 for free.
DaveT2 - Yeah, I saw that above but the first disc lists two different directories it's installing in. First it says it will install in C:\Creative Suite CS2 and then when you accept the agreement it says it's installing in C:\Program Files\Adobe. Discs 2 and 3 won't install properly in either of these so I may just take another approach. Thanks for your help. Kent

Adobe giving away CS2 for free.
Install is kind of flakey. It puts it in 2 directories and won't install disc 2 and 3. Just says it's reading file and then complete, but never installs anything but photoshop. Any clues? Kent

Is any vegas user seriously upgrading to Win 8?
Agree with Kelly. I do work on my PC and unfortunately, SCS has lost my business. I got V11 to operate on my XP machine but never used it. Use 9 and 10. No reason yet to upgrade OS and can't upgrade Vegas. Don't really feel the loss.

Z96 dimmable LED lights

They look quite similar to the Z96 and even take Sony F, FH and FM batteries. They don't have the nifty magnetic filters, but they do have 64 more LEDs and can be dimmed." I have a number of these lights John and they are pretty well made for the price. They run forever on rechargeable NiMH or even Duracells. Suggest the warming filter be added if they are the sole source of light but you don't need it outdoors mixed with sun for fill light. The price varies hour-by-hour. When I realized that it did, I watched and found them late one night for $32 each with free shipping. Next day they were back up to $40 plus shipping. Kent

Lavs Bob Costas Wore at Olympics 2012?
Using 2 lavs, especially one pointing down was a trick to reduce ambient noise in a location. Since the voice of the person wearing them was close to the mic, it had very little effect, but ambient noise further away would often cancel arriving out-of-phase at the two mic heads. Try it - it works. Kent

I have been using Gary's method with the IFO files flawlessly since he posted it. I use it to open DVD music videos provided by a client for a music show we produce and it never fails and the quality is excellent since the DVD's they provide come straight from their working master file. Their originals are usually shot on a RED or 35mm film and the edited master is used to make the DVD's. EDIT to clarify source

OT: Specs for Dell M4600 Laptop
I bought a Blu-Ray bundle from Videoguys with the Pioneer 206 and the Vantec NexStar enclosure last year (I think there is a newer model now) and it has been flawless. My first DVD burner from Pioneer is still going strong, but with a slight limp, after 8 years so I stuck with a good thing. This is the 3rd Pioneer burner I've owned and the first Blu-Ray and never had a moment's problem with them or the discs they burned (but I always use Ty premium discs). I think the price was around $150 for the case and burner. Kent

Great software for stills
I see from looking at their web site Resize appears to be an updated version of Genuine Fractals. I certainly don't work for OnOne, but I can attest to the voodoo that Genuine Fractals use to do and I would assume, Resize does. I got a free copy of Genuine Fractals years ago in a magazine promotion that allowed 10 free uses (within Photoshop). I had a project going on to create some large blowups for a backdrop on a TV set. The client provided me with 125k digital files and wanted them blown up to 30x40 inches. After printing one out on my Epson photo plotter they were so pixellated that they were unusable. The client had no other source for the material so I tried various forms of resizing. Nothing worked. Then, I remembered the free Genuine Fractals disc, loaded it into Photoshop and printed a test. It was absolutely mind-blowing... amazing! While I know it sounds impossible, the detail in the 30x40 prints looked sharper and more detailed that the original 3x5 sample prints. So, if indeed Resize is a remake of Genuine Fractals, then I'm placing my order today. The only reason I didn't buy it after trying the original years ago is that it was too expensive. Now, I can justify it even for occasional use. Kent

HD to SD DVD what am I missing
Agree with DaveT2...I have been using Vegas for years to do a TV show shot in HDV. One of the stations requires SD so I simply make a letterboxed non-widescreen version render using the DVDA template and give them the SD DVD. It looks fantastic on the air and we get comments all the time about the high quality. Kent
