Borders Changing size
jazzman54 - just tried this in V7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and it works exactly as intended for me. I applied a white border, used track motion to move it across the screen L to R in 10 seconds and no change at all in size of border. So, I can confirm that Sony may not be able to reproduce it because I for one cannot either. Sorry. Kent

wot: Comercial BlueRay disc audio volume fail.
I was having a problem with virtually all discs and even live TV - especially 5.1 football games. Everything sounded great except I could hardly hear the dialogue on movies, regular and Blu-ray, and the announcers on the football game were virtually non-existant. I pulled my hair out for weeks going thru all the level and setting on the DVD player, the home theater amp and the TV set-top box and could not fix the problem. Then one day by accident, I discovered the center channel speaker had a connection disconnected. The center channel and the piezo tweeter were not working. Now, I would have thought having the front left and right speakers connected as in your set-up would have carried the center channel OK but it didn't. I reconnected the center channel and everything worked properly. I could hear the announcers on football over the crowd noise and the dialogue came thru fine on movies. Since you have analog left and right not sure how this would apply, but it sounds exactly like what I experienced w/o the center channel. Kent

Don't know if you saw Super 8 in the theater or not, but the audio track had an incredible dynamic range. I remember the train wreck actually vibrated my chair and my insides. Remember 16bit recordings can have 96dB of dynamic range and 24bit around 144dB of dynamic range. Not that the whole range is used but what you describe is not unbeliveable and may be the result of taking advantage of more of the available dynamic range. This can be annoying in your home set-up. I usually wait until no one else is in the house, set the audio level to where dialogue is acceptable and let the explosions rattle the windows...I love it but my wife would be playing AGC with the remote volume control reducing the dynamic range to 10 to 12 dB. lol Kent

OT: Need help with Datavideo DN-60
Hummm-never had any problem with the unit or bringing the files into Vegas. I use a built-in card reader on my computer for copying the files to a folder on an external HDD. Use it to do a monthly TV show and it has been flawless with the Extreme series SanDisk cards. Give Datavideo a call. They are VERY responsive and will stay on the fone with you until the problem is solved. If the tech guys aren't there when you call, they'll take your number and call back within a few hours. Let me know what you find out. Also - you are copying the files over and not reading from the card - right? Kent

Are you recording in "Sync to Tape" mode or manually? In what file format are you recording? Are you using the the SanDisk card which came with the unit? Kent

jrazz - If you get one, let me know via email. There are two things that I thought were "quirky" on the menu and had me stumped. I called tech support and they explained it and I felt really dumb - but, still have to think about it if I go more than a week without using the unit. Kent

jrazz - The DN60 can be set to trigger both ways. You can set it to trigger when you hit the record button on the camera and the tape rolls in the A1U or set it to manually start by pushing the button on the DN60. If recording in HD it creates m2t files. In SD, it has a buffer so it records 5 seconds or so before you trigger it so you won't miss anything and in SD it can also be set to record time lapse. The documentation is pretty good, they have firmware update, and the unit seems to be pretty well made. As I said earlier, been very pleased with mine. Kent

Looking For A Tape Bypass Unit...
j razz - I use rechargable batteries for mine but it comes with an AC unit also. A set of regular alkaline batteries will run about 2-3 hours before they die. The DN-60 requires a 6-pin 1394 cable and, of course, the A1U uses the 4 pin. The unit comes with a cable and for about $20 you can get a 25' one from B&H. They also have a 75' one but it's 6pin to 6pin. Kent

Don't know what you consider cheap, but I have a Datavideo DN-60 and it is great. It comes with a 16g card. I bought a 4" extension rail to mount in the hot shoe and a short swivel adaptor to mount the unit so I could still use the XLR audio unit on the A1U. You need to use the suggested cards for it because cheap cards don't hold up very well. They may work for a while and then suddenly stop working. Also, you can format the cards in the NTSF file system with the DN-60 and are not limited to FAT32. Kent.

Jerry - Didn't try to do anything with speed. This is with noise removal, vacuum tube declipping, and virtual valve enhancement. Didn't try to do anything with the speed. Sounds like some acetate cut noise and there was definitely a tape involved somewhere as you can hear the phasing from track to track as the tape weaves over the heads. That's strange John. MPEG-2 plays fine is 7 and all subsequent versions for me. This is like another one of those Vegas things that work for some and not others. Kent

For what it's worth...I just opened an IFO file in Vegas 7 and it worked fine. I might just try to reinstall V3 and see if it works there but I know for sure it works in V7, VP8, VP9, VP10, VP11. Kent

Don't seem to have a problem here. It works fine. Can you see all the templates for mpg2? But, I'm using VP11 on an XP machine so that makes me "weird". lol Kent

Perhaps all of us who have complained to SCS about the problems importing DVD's should apologize to them...lol. The reason they never "fixed" it is because Vegas already did this and you don't need to use the import DVD function which is slow at best. Thanks again, Gary. Kent

Gary - I have been reading these post since before 2004 and started with Vegas 3. I don't recall EVER seeing the suggestion to use the IFO file to open a DVD on the timeline but I just tried it on 3 DVD's and it works perfectly. You can see the markers where Vegas normally splits the files and gets confused but using the IFO it plays flawlessly. Many thanks for the tip and I suggest that anyone who has tried other methods with varying success try Gary's approach. And, it's FREE. Free is good. Kent

Preferred DVD Import Software?
I have been wrestling with this problem forever. Tonight I finally tried John Meyer's version using DVD Shrink. It worked exactly as it should and created 1 VOB file. Vegas 7, 8, 9, and 10 would not even show the VOB file in the explorer window so I changed it to MPG. It would then open in any version of Vegas but was only about 10 seconds long. However, looking at the properties of the file it was exactly the size it should have been for the combined files. What is strange, is that the combined file plays perfectly in Windows Media Player and even opens in Windows Movie Maker but in 2 pieces. However, joining the pieces does not leave the gap in the audio as it does in Vegas. Any ideas on why Vegas still won't work right with the combined file. Thanks in advance. Kent

Disappearing Toolbar Icons
A long standing annoyance with Vegas. Go to TOOLS, SCRIPTING, then select RESCAN SCRIPT FOLDER and all should be well ... until next time they go away. Kent

Warning: Vegas 11 32 bit won't load onto XP
Agree with malowz...it's a shame they go to the trouble and out of their way to make sure 11 won't work on XP but won't fix the bugs that have been there forever. Kent

Media Black while Editing
Agreed. Never had this problem before until recently. I switched to 10e for editing a TV show we do and had the problem about 2 months ago. Finally got so frustrated I went back to 9 and have the same problem now. Today I spent 3 hours sweetening the audio when it should have taken half that time. I had to restart 6 times to get through a 1/2 hour show. VERY frustrating! Kent
