Sorry, just in case my wording is causing confusion, what I meant to say is that smart Tvs can play hd videos directly from hard drives or USB drives....

Just bought a Blue-Ray burner but...
Interesting reading Nick. I see other programmes allow for flash based menu driven projects. But flash is not what the future holds, and I assume that such formats are not playable from drives conected to smart TVs. My assumption furthermore is that potential clients perceive more value in DVD-like delivery, enriching the customer experience, as opposed to a set of disconnected videos (even if you can include chapter points) to be played as a list: a bit like playing stuff from a folder on a pc. Important preceived value is lost and therefore the possibilty to charge more. There is a relevant value in delivering a box with covers + an interactive, simple navitation structure inherent to DVDs/Blue-Rays. I am actually quite surprised that there seems to be little interest in exploring or developing an industry solution. Or I am ignorant of what is really going on, which is probably the case...

Just bought a Blue-Ray burner but...
Indeed david-tu... My smart Tv can play videos in HD directly from a flash drive, and the my last project I handed over in flash drive because it was going to been shown on a Smart TV which can play videos directly. I then went on and auhored a DVD as an extra, but I have a feeling it will never be played. I was quite surprised, since the "client" - actually a friend- wanted a video for his parent's 50th wedding aniversary. They were to project the video at a family celebration, so I instructed my friend on how to play the thing off the Smart TV. What really knocked me back was that he later told me his parents had shown the video a number of times to friends and relatives directly from the flash drive, so it isn't that "difficult" (it's not rocket science I know, but taking into account that the couple are in their 70's I assumed it might be a bit more challenging..). I auhored the DVD thinking it would allow this couple to play the video off a DVD player with no hassles, but as it has turned out it is unnecessary. So I agree, the next logical step is to create a menu driven shell to emulate DVD/Blue-Ray operation; and that is what I would expect of a programme such a DVD Architect...I actually find it strange that this development is nowhere to be seen yet....

Thanks david-tu. Very informative. Just out of curiosity, when you say the ads get placed "over the video" do you mean they actually overlay the video as it's being played, or is the add played as a pre-roll before the video starts? thanks again!

Issues with chapter (in/out points) on playback
Thanks David, I frist thought it was a disk issue (was burning to a DVD +RW for trial and error purposes. Then tried a +R and got the same problem. And it was only happening at that particluar chapter "point". I gave up in the end and just rendered that section of the video out as a single entity and added it to the project and the problem has gone (using the same +RW I was using originally.) I'm not sure if it is the player having trouble "keeping up", and I don´t have access to any other player at this particluar moment (I'm handing in the project tomorrow....). The disks were single layer and were not full; the whole project was about 2.3 GB... What really gets me is that, given the preview function does not work as it should -or at least I was unable to get back to the menu while testing one of the chapters by pressing the menu button on the remote- the testing was all the more cumbersome. Peak levels and normalizing
Just a quick update on how the project ended.... having sorted out the different audio mixes, ensuring that none peaked above 0db, I finally started a new project to render out the final video, including two preciously rendered avi and three more nested vegs Thought all was hunky dory and rendered away: 4 hours for a 15 minute video... anyway, played the video on a TV as a final check before delivery and... the audio was clipping...this was with a spanking new default veg with no new effects or volume meddling... I confess I was seriously confused. I guess I need to normalise AGAIN within this final timeline before the final render.... So more patience was called upon and another 4 hours of rendering... If I'm doing anything wrong I'd really appreciate advice. I also wonder if normalizing is always needed, why can't Vegas issue a warning when you are going to render saying something like..."hey! Before rendering, have you made sure you have normalized all audio??" thanks again for all your help! best regards, Paul

Peak levels and normalizing
I will run a test with a cample clip to try to reproduce the clipping after normalizing. This I found especially evident when editing in Sound Forge - applying a couple of effects including Wave Hammer- and normalizing whithin. The saved clip in vegas would clip significantly, though I suspect part of the reason is that the default type of normalizing is RMS, as well as the fact that the clips were 48k in a 44k project probably. I did also see the peaks when normalizing in Vegas, only unique moments (ie not frequently throughout the audio as it would when importing from Sound Forge.) I did check that all effects were in fact disabled at track level when this was happening. I asume this was due to the difference in the audio properties vs the project properties as John_Cline has suggested. As it is I'm mixing VO with a music track, so have had to tweak volume envelopes for ducking. So thank you all for your help with this audio thing...! Learning loads of new stuff and you guys really help me along.. Best regards, Paul.

Thanks Nick, I'll give your method a go! I did actually buy a license to Ultimate S way back when, (I can't for the life of me remember under which credentials so upgrading if at all possible seems unlikely) and did check out Vegasaur and Excalibur today. I came across FASST plugins at just under 10$ apiece which would be an ideal option, but alas they aren't VP 14 compatible. Anyway I will try your suggestion which I'm sure will be a huge timesaver so thank you again for your help. And please do write a VO script: just the name is worth it!!

Thanks Nick, the rendering issue is a mystery, and may be due to the memory issues. However, I even tried rebooting and the problem was still there on that particular clip. I tried pre-rendering about 30 seconds beginning at where the 68% freeze was happening and still no luck. So I gave up and rendered out to progressive interpolate instead of smart de-interlace and that worked. What I find weird is that it didn't happen on three other clips I rendered using smart de-interlace, two of which where longer. Anyway I moved on, and a couple of hours later tried one last time with the problematic clip and it rendered using smart de-deinterlace without a hitch! All very mysterious... the project has evolved so I will have to do a final render soon, but will stick to interlaced and thus avoid losing more hair in the process... My next task is editing and polishing the VO which is going to be a fun learning curve... + the very "entertaining" audio ducking exercise which will take me a while of course. I am aware of a few paid scripts which are useful for all this but can't justify the cost since I don't do this for a living and have already invested in an upgrade of Vegas and Soundforge to help me along.... any freeby scripts available?? thanks again for all your help and interest. best regards, Paul

Thank you to all who have helped me out with suggestions! I did actually try the search before posting but got lost in posts dating back a few years and was unable to find specifics on codecs. Nick, it never ocurred to me to look up in the VP Help! Must take note to check in there when in doubt about the software specifics... Some of the stuff included in the project was shot on old film cameras (super 8?) back in the 60's, which was then put on VHS and finally on DVD, so is has taken a bit of a hit in the different processes...Since it's interlaced, I take it my best bet is to keep it that way and let the large Smart TV (which is the first screen it will be shown on) do its thing on playback. I have tried a render to progressive using Vegas' smart de-interlace option (even though one clip's render keeps freezing at 68% - tried pre-rendering from there onwards and still had no success...), but the final product is poor (not really surprising). I'm going to try rendering interlaced and see if it any better. Once again thanks for the suggestions, Best regards, Paul.

john_dennis, Thank you for that render. I must say that the quality is pretty stunning, but I'm still seeing that stutter/judder right at the beginning, when the camera pans down and to the side before the boarder starts moving. This is exactly what I was seeing in my early attemps. Nick, My delivery destination is varied. Typically I would distribute these type of videos to the people who appear in the video, so the final viewing can be a mobile device, TV or computer. Having said that, I have a failry relevant project coming up which involves mixing various media types, though the final video will be projected onto a screen from a Mac. Regardless, I will need to provide "user friendly" media which might even involve a DVD. As regards whether I will be adding effects, titles or whatever the answer is yes. Some underwater clips for example need severe colour correction since the GoPro has delivered a distinct green cast in the video. I have colour corrected it in Vegas and it looks great. I will be mixing those with stills, so yes, I need to work on the footage in Vegas. Thanks again for all your help!. Quitter, No I son't think the render from Splice is better...Not after the last exercise. It was way better before though! What I really wanted to check out is how the renders "behave" with mixed media. With Splice it's no fuss: just add mobile device video clips, stills, music, GoPro or whatever, adjust lengths or speed settings, add (or don't Ken Burns effect on stills pick render setting and click to render. NIce hobbyist solution while away. I have been using Vegas on and off since version 3, and recently upgraded from v9 to 14. In the good old days it was pretty simple to add stuff and render away, be it for DVD or AVI for computers and so on. With the advent of HD, framrates, different resolutions, codecs and the ubiquitous mobile devices it all seems to have become more complicated. Resampling for example was analysed by Vegas in the good old days. If the clip needed it Vegas would apply it; if it didn't it just left it alone. I am actually partially "guilty" for the "smart resampling". In the older versions, sampling would be turned off by defect. However given that Vegas smartly identified whether resamling was needed, I suggested on a forum that it should be enabled by defect and let Vegas do the right thing, and the suggestion was taken up by Sony. Now I am fairly confused as to when resampling is to be enabled. Do different framerates on one timeline need it? Do varitions in speed require it? Do variations in speed require it when you have a 50p framerate clip on a 25p timeline and you want to slow the speed up by 50%? etc etc...BUT this is a different story on which I have yet to read up on, since there are bound to be loads of literature scattered around all the forums. Splice is actually quite a neat programme for quick hobby edits on idevices, delivering pretty decent results if viewed on that type of screens. It was actually recently bought by GoPro, who are determined to provide an front-to-end solution to the average Joe. Once again thank you for all your help. Now I can actually colour correct and stabilise some of the footage! All the best, Paul.

A huge thanks for helping me out with this! Quitter, I checked out your render and it still feels under par with what I am seeing from Splice (I actually rendered out a test video containing a still, an iphone clip and the sample clip I posted, including a touch of slow motion to understand the outcomes better. Nick, I tried your solution on the MainConcept encoder and it does seem to provide a fairly good quality video, although there is some jerkiness in a panning shot. However, it is much better than what I had achieved so far so a big thank you! If you are interested in a comparison between what an Ipad can deliver with the app Splice and what I have obtained through the MainConcpet encoder these are the clips. Please bear in mind that they are not the exactly the same. Thanks Nick. The thing is that the clip I uploaded is great quality, but it is staright from the camera. What I cannot seem to manage is to render te clip into anything decent (ignoring the high end codecs- one rendered a 1.7GB clip from this original using the HD 720-50p YUV template in Vegas). What I find more disturbing is that using a programme called Splice on the Iphone/Ipad the quality of the renders from Gopro clips (in video productions including stills, Gopro clips etc...) is pretty stunning (viewing both on devices and my PC) and basically that is what I'm hoping to emulate in Vegas. So there must be a way to get decent renders, even though I can´t fathom it out as yet. Thanks again for helping me along. Best regards, Paul.

Nick, thank you for popping in! 1. I'm on Vegas Pro 14, build 161 2. The jutter happens on regular speed clips, but I see the jutter also if I slow down rhe speed. 3. I have tried both 50% and other values 4. Yes, I'm sure it takes place on rendered video. In fact I've tried rendering with different codecs, with varied success, but the problem is I don't really know which to use to get the most compatibility, for distribution purposes (online, peer to peer etc...) I also read somwhere that if Gopro studio is installed I should get access to Cineform codec, but alas it is nowhere to be found. (I installed Vegas Pro 14 on a pc which already has Forpo Studio installed....) thanks again for helping out! best regards, Paul.

Spot, I've moved from a relatively active member (define "active"...) to a mere browser of this forum: I am merely a "om and pop"user of Vegas, but much of my devotion to the programme comes from your spirit, dedication and contribution. A sad day is when accidents occur, but sadly they do.. Very happy as all to know the worst is over and life is ahead, albeit with toil, trials and tribulations. I do hope that things move forward quickly. All I can say is that I'm very relieved that the worst is over. If you are ever in Madrid (Spain)and need a hand, just let me know. All the best!

I think I give up...just tried the web service and it isn't working for me...what's even worse is that I cannot now seem to be able to re-buy since I've used my serial number in my initial purchase. FWIW, I originally wanted the download version to avoid import taxes...but then caught the cinescore offer (which seems to be only boxed version) and thought that if that had to come in the post, I might aswell get it all at once. Anyway, now I have apparently no option but to skip this version unless someone from Sony helps me out. Thanks for your help everyone. At present I am helpless.
