Contemplating a Mac, how will Vegas 9 fare?
I use both Vegas (PC) and Premiere Pro CS4 (Mac). When I capture straight to the HDD (DV material) on the Mac, I use OnLocation (QuickTime files). I have no difficulty using these in Vegas. YMMV - codecs and the like... Rick

Are the computers networked and / or do the users have to log onto them? If so (and I know this works if they're part of a domain), you can control the folder (and / or any files within the folder) with user permissions. I'm not on a Windows computer at the moment and may not get all the details right, but we use this at work. What I'm describing is based on a Windows domain using the NTFS file system. Basically you need to set the permissions on the folder so the user has permission to read, but not delete the folder. Ideally, on a domain, the students would be part of a group of users ("students" for example) so you don't have to manage the permissions on a per-user basis. Instructors (who may need to be able to make modifications) might be in a different group ("staff"). Our workstations run XP Pro; I've not dealt with it on Vista personally. I know our domain enforces these restrictions on Vista or OSX machines that are on the domain. Ideally, the folder itself would be on a file server (one place for everyone). You can create a desktop shortcut on each machine if wanted. A right click into either "Properties" or "Security" will get you started. There are some basic settings and of course there are more granular "advanced" settings. You'd select a user or a group that you want to change the permissions for ("students" group), define what they can / can't do and select whether the new permissions should also apply to the files / folders beneath the one you're working on. It can get complex and confusing, but it doesn't have to. So long as you're working with a test folder that you're in control of, there shouldn't be any risk of you making irreversible mistakes in testing. We use this to control permissions on folders on a server. If they're not on a domain, but if each machine is set to require users to log on, it should still be useful (you, as a user with higher privileges has full control over the folder; the student logon has the restricted permissions over the folder). ritsmer, So you just did a plain old install and reformatted your primary disk as NTFS to install Win 7? That sounds like a great option for those with an extra HDD (another drive for Mac OS if wanted)... I'm wondering - does holding down the option key at startup give you startup disk options (i.e. if so, and if you have Mac OS on another drive, you could select your OS without worrying at all about BC)?

WAY OT: Skype and Video Capture Cards
I've used a DSR-500 connected via firewire to feed Skype, so anything you can feed similarly should work (even if it's through a camera to perform the conversion, or a Canopus box, etc). Rick

Vegas Pro 9 64-bit: Keep Losing CODECs for Render
I've seen this too on a laptop where I'm got 8.1 installed on Vista 64. Sometimes when I go to render, almost everything is unavailable. I didn't make a complete list of what wasn't there, but .mp3 was gone, .wmv was gone... It was a bit unnerving at first. I restarted Vegas and they were back... It's happened to me 3 or 4 times (I don't use that machine very often; only when my primary is tied up on something else). Rick

MacBook Pro / BootCamp / Vegas Experiences?
Mark, Another vote for that setup. My MBP is also older (2 years now); I have Vista on the Bootcamp side and have captured many, many hours of video straight to the laptop using both OnLocation and Vegas. Rick

Bootcamp SATA RAID
JHendrix - Wish I could help more, but my video needs are pretty simple (as is my setup). I'm on Vista 32 running V 8.0c, and I'm still editing SD. Having said that, my bootcamp setup was very painless - installed from a Vista Ultimate DVD two years ago (before SP1) and have kept it updated since. The updated (2.1?) bootcamp drivers fixed some minor issues I had early on (battery status & Airport, as I recall). I've installed XP SP2 on bootcamp partitions at work with no driver issues (5 of them). These too are laptops; haven't done it on a tower. As I recall the routine, install XP and then immediately install the bootcamp drivers, then run Windows Update). Rick

ritsmer, AFAIK, the bootcamp / 2GB issue is only under Win XP. I'm on an older 2.16 GHZ MacBook Pro with 3GB RAM installed. I run Vista 32 bit, and when I boot via bootcamp, I see all 3GB. From what I've read, XP 64, Vista 64 and Win 7 64 bit users are seeing all of their installed RAM; Vista 32 and Win 7 32 bit users are seeing 3GB (max for a 32 bit system). Granted, not everyone wants to mess with Vista, move up to 64 bit or take a chance on the release candidate version of Win 7.... But, since any 32 bit operating system can only see 3GB of RAM anyway (really 4GB behind the scenes), its really not much of a bootcamp limitation. Rick

Mac: XP under Bootcamp as well as Parallels?
fausseplanete - Regarding easy backups - for your Boot Camp partition... Check out Winclone. From OSX, Winclone makes a compressed image of your WIndows partition that you can save off. If you ever have trouble with your Windows install, you can restore it easily from within OSX right to your Boot Camp partition. I upgraded from a 120GB HDD to a 320 GB HDD. I used the Mac Disk Utility to clone my Mac partition (just in case) and Winclone to clone my Boot Camp partition. I installed Leopard fresh onto the new drive and used the Boot Camp utility to create the Boot Camp partition. Winclone restored my Windows partition painlessly. I was up and running very quickly. I now use it to make regular backups of my entire Windows partition (did one tonight and it took about 30 minutes for 45GB - going to an eSata drive). Rick

Batch Rendering?
There are scripts available to render multiple .veg files at one time (rather than multiple flavors of the same .veg). I'm pretty sure I've got a version of one at home, but I'm traveling. Some of the commercial products have them - Ultimate S and the Veggie Toolkit are two.... Mac: XP under Bootcamp as well as Parallels?
I've run Vegas under Boot Camp for 2 years and have loved it; I recently bought Parallels (version 3). I'm on Leopard 10.5.6 and Vista Ultimate. I have Parallels configured to run the Boot Camp installation of Vista. Vegas runs under Parallels, but for me the performance is much less than it is running natively in Boot Camp. I can edit, but my frame rate takes a hard hit. To be fair, the video I've edited this way was on a USB drive, and I'm wondering if virtualizing affects drive performance with the USB drive. I just got an eSata drive / connector, so I'll test that and report back in this thread. For me, it's a no-lose situation because Parallels has other value for me. If I'm doing serious editing, I can easily reboot into Windows and run via Boot Camp. If I just need to quickly check / change something, I can open Vegas up in Parallels and, since it's using the Boot Camp installation of Windows, I'm not managing a third "computer". Rick

Adobe OnLocation - Who Uses This?
I use it every week, although not to its fullest potential. I use it to record our church service, so although I initially payed close attention to the scopes, I'm pretty much on auto-pilot with it now since little changes in the venue. I've got the version that came with CS3 and haven't yet tried the new (CS4) version to compare. Rick

OT: USB drive ok to use for editing?
I capture and edit from bus-powered USB drives all the time. I'm not doing any HDV, but it's become routine for me to capture 1+ hour of event video to a USB drive and edit it. I normally render to another drive, but occasionally have had to render back to the same drive I've captured on and it works. Not sure why you've had trouble capturing to a firewire drive... I've done that successfully as well. For capturing, I've used both Vidcap and (most recently) Adobe's OnLocation. Neither drop frames. Rick

Can Vegas work on a Mac?
ritsmer - I updated a new MB Pro to Boot Camp 2.1 last week. That part was fine (booted into Windows, downloaded the .exe and ran it). SP3's been giving us issues as we run both Boot Camp and Parallels - with Parallels pointed to the Boot Camp partition. Due to lack of time to sort it out, we've decided for the moment to get the Mac's up to Boot Camp 2.1, but wait on SP3. We're double checking to be sure that all other high priority updates are installed in the mean time. Rick

OT: Slingbox is a cool toy
FWIW, there is a free way to accomplish the same thing. It's called Orb (www.orb.com) and it is a freeware (beta) application that takes the signal from your computer's TV tuner and makes it available on the internet. It also makes your local audio files, photos and documents available for you if you wish (each section can be turned off and on). You can remotely activate Orb's recording feature and watch recorded shows. Although I've never tried Slingbox, I hear that this is a great alternative (and free is always good). I've used it for over a year, and I love it. It's been in "beta" the entire time and has always been free. I'm sure that will change at some point, but who knows when... I travel pretty frequently, and I can pull up my home cable on my Windows Mobile Treo 700WX. Depending on on the connection speed where I'm at, I'll get some buffering, but most often it is good enough. I think Orb works with Tivo, but honestly I haven't checked into it as I don't have one. I've made my entire iTunes library available, so as long as I have an internet connection, I'm good to go. I have a Sprint EVDO card and I regularly get 700kbps down with it - plenty fast to get a decent stream from home. Rick

Drobo storage... anyone ?
I've actually been looking into these as a backup solution. I haven't yet bought one, but it's interesting to see that the photography world is jumping all over them... an example is Scott Kelby of National Association of Photoshop Professionals fame. Their new one is equipped with Firewire 800, so perhaps the speed issue has been addressed. I doubt that it would be an effective place to capture video (speed), but my need at the moment is to create a safe repository of online storage. I manage several 10TB disk arrays at work and am not keen on having that complexity here at home - not to mention the cost of true RAID. I'm still not convinced, but most of what I've read from still photographers keeps me interested and watching... Rick

OT: Flash Player 9 & IE? Install how?
Grazie, At work, I had 5 different workstations that refused to properly install Flash 9 player. Anyway of using AE plugs in vegas
Actually, I've had luck framserving from Satish's plugin from Vegas to AE CS3. I do that rather than render from Vegas, do FX in AE and then render again to import back into the Vegas timeline. Basically, I'm saving the time & space of the first render. An example would be to use AE's motion tracking.... frameserve it out to AE, render the tracked vid (usually uncompressed) & then bring it back in. Rick

Live Vegas capture to USB Hard Disk OK ??
I too capture regularly to USB drives - including the small WD bus powered drives. Never had a problem using either Sony's VidCap or, more recently, Adobe OnLocation. I rarely put tape in my camera when I'm shooting fixed..... Rick
