Stabilization - choices and what works best?
lenard-p I had the cine film digitalized professionally because the company had a proper Telecine machine which corrects the problem of adjusting for the different frame rates (16 or 18fps to 25fps) by interpolating and adjusting frames into the finished project. When I imported this into Vegas Pro 12 I just applied Mercalli on its own (although I did play around with one or two of the plug-in's settings to test and experiment with the effects). The first part of the exercise was done at a not unreasonable cost butthe second part was straightforward if time consuming. Richard

Stabilization - choices and what works best?
I had an old Standard 8 cine film in which the frames were slipping badly to give an extremely juddery projected image. I had the film digitalised (professionally) and put on a disc which I then transferred to Vegas 12. Of course all the juddering remained but I applied the Mercalli plug-in and this smoothed the images out almost completely. It is an an extreme example of what Mercalli can achieve and I cannot praise them too highly. It's true it took a time as I had to do the whole film scene by scene (event by event) but the results were so worthwhile. Richard

Unsharp Mask
The Unsharp Mask derives from a trick used in black and white printing. If you had a negative that was not quite sharp enough you made a copy of that negative and then put the two together but very slightly out of alignment and printed from there to the paper. It was a tedious process and a bit hit and miss but if you were lucky you ended up with a sharper print. If I have a slightly unsharp event I tend to use the Unsharp Mask as my first choice and prefer it to the Sharpen Filter or the option available in Convolution Kernel. My judgement on its success or otherwise tends to be made by eye rather than via the measuring options --- after all, if it passes the eye test it must be reasonably acceptable unless you are in ultra critical mode when technicalities can sometimes, but only sometimes, be counter productive. Can Magix Vegas make strobes look normal? [video contains strobing]
Ha! Ha! Ho! Ho! Nice one Grazie. I seem to remember that, back in the day, NewBlue used to have a plug in that removed flash light intrusions on an event. It was pretty good as well but whether it could also deal with strobe lighting is anyone's guess. Might be worth a try if it's still available. Good luck. Richard

Any tool to OPEN vp17 files in OLDER vegas pro version?
Vegas had never been backwards compatible. That's because each new version will contain new or altered codes, actions etc that can's be read in an earlier version. Forward compatibility is normally not a problem however. Richard

pierre-k this feature annoys me. In a complex project, it takes a very long time to return from Expanded to normal mode. Up to 20 seconds. Please change the keyboard shortcut. Double clicking the mouse in Vegas is the punishment of God. I suggest for example Triple click mouse. The use of the 5 key (see my previous post) will save all that time. A very usdeful tool. It was introduced in Version 12 and one of Sony's accmpanying tutorials (Gary Ribholz) gave an excellent demonstration of its usefulness. The use of 5 on the numerical keypad makes it easy to restore the screen to normal. Richard

Is mouse wheel + Ctrl for moving sliders to the right only, not left?
Pressing Ctrl as you drag allows finer adjustments to be made in just about everything controlled by dragging or sliding in Vegas, Richard

FireWire compatability
Do you have a Firewire Plug on the camera? If so it might be a connection problem as the Firewire cables themselves as well as the two connections and that in the camera can be very sensitive and vulnerable to damage. Can you see if pt helps to useanother cable and/or another camera with a suitable connection? Richard

New UI, Please
Isn't this a "no win" situation for Vegas? People have complained about or expressed pleasure with the various UI for years and I do not believe it is possible to find a layout or design that will please everyone: what some like others dislike and vice versa. It seems to me that this issue can never be much more than a matter of personal choice. Richard
