Runway AI - masking, etc
I just used the green screen feature to rotoscope me sitting in the chair which isolated me sitting there. That isolated me and left nothing else on the clip. Then I used another clip with me walking behind that "empty" chair. I took those two clips and put the rotoscope one on the top track and the other one with me standing which had all the background etc. on it on the bottom track. Here's a short video on it I made for you. Took me under 2 minutes to create the video. I think the trial free version only lets you "green screen" a few times before it asks to upgrade for $12 a month.

Here's an example of a video I made of me standing behind myself which truly took me no more than 4 minutes to make and this included doing the tracking of my hand. I know Boris would be much more sophisticated but it also has a steep learning curve at least for me it does. Runway costs $12 a month and Mocha is $75 a month and silhouette is $150 a month. Runway also has an Inpaint feature that works pretty darn good. This AI version of rotoscoping and tracking is honestly done with a few clicks of the mouse.

Smart Mask (AI assisted automatic masking) Introduction
I've watched the posts and tutorials here on "smart mask" but they all really seem to be about other masking procedures and not the smart mask. When I use it I see a rectangular outlines around objects and I can then create a very rough mask on that object. Where do you go from here? I'm hoping someone will post a short tutorial strictly about how to use the "smart mask". Thanks

Yes!! That works, the "open copy in audio editor". However, I did discover that an audio file will not open in RX9 if the clip has been shortened or split. Work-a-round: set RX9 as the "Preferred Audio Editor" in "Options> Preferences> Audio" .. assuming VP-20 is like previous builds. I've tried several types of files and none of them work when trying to access through V20 and all of them work when opening them directly in RX9 so I'm pretty sure any mediainfo wouldn't be of any help.

RX9 works fine if I just render and drop the wav file into it and it's a great program. Its saved me quite a few times from annoying background sounds, etc.

It's only an issue with that one program as it's the only one I have set up that way in Vegas.As you suggested, I have been doing just that, rendering it out and then bringing it into RX9 but since the feature is suppose to be available in Vegas I thought I'd like to have it set up that way. Not a big issue but would be a convenience.

Where are you finding this update? Thanks On my Magix Account, but it is also able to download it through this link : https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/vegas-pro-20-build-326--139239/It is not a part of the Vegas installation itself but by installing you are able to use some new features in the program. Thanks. I downloaded the update and now it appears to recognize objects with a vague mask. In addition to just recognizing objects, is there a way to apply that mask so as for instance to adjust the color etc on the mask? Not sure how to use it.

No QSV with i9-10900X I think, which is too bad as it has stability benefits over NVDEC in Vegas. You can try setting hardware decode to off if your CPU can handle decoding without the GPU. My life has been pure bliss. Hi John, I really don't know what to report that I haven't already. V20 simply crashes quite a few times every hour I use it.

Not Responding
I see you are using NVDEC as your decoder in file I/O under Preferences... set that to QSV or Off. Any difference? Don't forget to reboot VEGAS after changing that setting. Everything is unchecked and has been but doesn't seem to be a fix.

Well... the new update 326 sure didn't fix any of the "not responding" crashes for me. Started a simple new project yesterday with only a few tracks and the "not responding" thing is having a field day every few minutes.

Thank you, The VEGAS Creative Software Team I've found the Smart Mask (beta) in the Media Generator section but if I drag it to an event on the timeline I just get a message saying "Model not found". Is there a tutorial about what this plugin is all about somewhere? I really have no idea what it's suppose to do. Even though I've used vegas for more than a decade, I think sometimes the Vegas developers knowing everything about the program so very well forget that there are those of us out here that need some instructions with new features.Thanks

Broadcast level issue
I have no idea. This entire 8 bit thing still baffles me. I do know that at least for what I do I can edit and render in 8 bit full with V20 and then if I bring the rendered file over to Vegas 17 which doesn't have the 8 bit full but only legacy, it still reads OK which means I'm good to send the file for TV broadcast.

Thanks John, I had thought of doing the track motion but after having so very many tracks on the project I sort of didn't want to have another dedicated track just for that one clip. Your comment about the png file did trigger my resolve and that's what I did. Now I just have one PNG file which I can add to an existing track. Thanks John.

@Roger Bansemer With a background screenshot from my local ABC station, I inserted your file into a track above the main track. using only Track Motion, I resized and positioned the PBS provided logo over the ABC logo in about the same location. If I had to do this often, I'd just position the logo in a transparent PNG in Photoshop at the broadcast pixel dimensions and be done with it.

The forum won't let me upload the tif file but I converted it to a bitmap. It's a strange kind of file because although the extension said tif when I put it in photoshop it didn't have many save as options.

Broadcast level issue
@Roger Bansemer In Vegas Pro 18 and later, set Pixel Format to Legacy 8 bit (video levels) and Vegas Pro become a neutral arbiter. Hi John. Thanks for keeping up with the postings on this. I'm barely getting a grasp on this. I took a break from producing shows for PBS since the pandemic but now I'm at it again and I didn't have to worry about this since I had been using Vegas17.Now I have to deliver 13 episodes to PBS and used V20 using full 89 bit so you can see concern. The good news is that if I drop my finished programs rendered in full 8 bit and then drop them into V17 the scopes are still correct. So unless I learn something new, I think I'm good to go. Am I right in this? Sure appreciate your help.Roger

Motion Tracking jitters
@Roger Bansemer To avoid any confusion, I suggest you change the heading for your post to 'Motion Tracking', which is different to 'Track Motion'. Having said that, it doesn't immediately look as if you're doing anything wrong. I suggest you first disable GPU processing in Options/Preferences/Video and give it another try. If you're on NVIDIA, I've had weird glitching effects with GPU set to on. Another suggestion. Don't close the motion tracking dialog down until after you've applied the tracking to the media event. I've give the GPU a try although I hate having to switch back and forth with a setting like that which benefits other processes of editing.

Motion Tracking jitters
Hi Roger, I tried it on your (screen recorded) clip from the first frame and just tracked forward. I made the mask a little larger too. Yes, perfect... that's how it's suppose to be. Can't figure out what is going on with mine. I've done it at least a dozen times and get poor results. I know the area I've selected is not too small. Larger areas often go crazy with one of the 4 points selected stretching way out.

Stretching Event Length
I have found that if I highlight and drag an area (blue area) to the timeline that the text will fill that area. Otherwise by default the text will just fill a 5 second area.
