dvd not playing
1) For maximum compatibility, burn -R media, not +R (unless, see below) 2) Use a decent quality media, Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim - not the Office Depot special 3) If the DVD won't play at all, bitrate is not your issue, so don't worry about it yet. 4) Burn speed isn't all that critical; some people feel otherwise, YMMV. 5) If the player is more than 5-6 years old, it may simply be unable to play burned media, unless... 6) For old players when all else fails, if you burn +R media and set the booktype to DVD-ROM you can usually solve the problem; setting the booktype takes a DVD burner that lets you do this, and some software (sometimes provided by the burner manufacturer). LiteOn is one burner that will usually let you do this (and last I looked, they also provide a utility to change the booktype).

OT Partitioning
I'm not personally aware of any software requirements, but why would you want to do that? My personal feeling is that partitioning adds very little value to the party (except in certain specific situations). See how with Vista 64? If this is a different machine, why not just create a folder and share it on the network - then you can see it fine. I much prefer shared folders over partitions; it allows me to organize things by topic, rather than by drive, and in situations where I may need to move the folder (say from a smaller drive to a larger drive), the move is transparent to any applications on the same or other machines that may be referencing the folder. --Scott

Prepare your project but don't burn with DVDA. Download a trial version of Copy2DVD and let it burn the DVD - see how well that works.

From your description, it sounds like they want a video DVD, so do a "prepare/burn" in DVDA, do not master. Double check with them to be sure though.

What is the point of Mastering?
No, because it's a data DVD, not a video DVD. Normally you'd be mastering like this to send a DLT to a replication facility, but many places will accept video DVD's these days (not sure about a data DVD with a DLT image on it though - you'll need to check with your replication facility).

Filesize limitation, not enough memory
Yes and no. You can have files up to the size of your target media (roughly); DVDA should break the large file up into smaller files of roughly 1GB in size automatically. Verify the location of your temp folder - you can change the location in the DVDA preferences, but the default is on the C drive, so if your C drive is short on space this could be causing you issues.

Not more than 1GB in menu?
First, make sure you are not inadvertently creating a motion menu with your video clips (unless that's really what you want to do). It's a common mistake - drag your video clip onto the menu, do not set it as the background video for the menu. The 1GB limit is in the DVD specifications.

DVD Region Problems
You cannot set the region code on burned media, only on commercially stamped media. Therefore, by default, your burned disk will play anywhere.

No AutoChaptering???
I know this won't help, but I usually do this in Vegas - there are a number of scripts available that will set markers at every x interval, then when I render out of Vegas I include the markers with the media, and if I'm really worried about frame accuracy, I'll tell Vegas to put an I-Frame at every marker. Then, when all of this is brought in to DVDA, I have frame accurate chapter markers. --Scott

Buttons have 3 states: inactive, selected, activated And you can apply a color set to each of those states on a per menu level. It sounds like whatever your color set is for 'active' the Macbook is interpreting that as opaque. Whether or not the macbook is behaving correctly, I cannot say. --Scott

HELP! Menu trans trouble
Software players are notorious for this type of strange behavior and I don't think I've seen a single software player that 100% correctly emulates a physical DVD player; heck, even physical DVD players don't 100% implement the specs.. If you're only seeing this on software players, you've got 2, maybe 3 choices: 1) ignore it, 2) get rid of anything complex on your DVD or 3) complain to the software vendor and see if you can get them to fix. --Scott

I disagree. If the DVD player freaks out about this then theres likely something else wrong with the way the DVD was constructed. There are lots and lots of major DVD titles that put autorun.inf's and executables at the root - major motion picture studios wouldn't do this if it was a significantly widespread issue with players.

There's no requirement for it to be in a folder, it's just how DVDA does things. With Nero you can just put the file at the root.

It's a matter of physics. You can optimize your layout for moving from one clip to the next by putting the clips adjacent to each other on the DVD (and assuming the end action of the first clip is to play the second), but you can't really optimize going from clip to menu and vice-versa. Menus are (typically) all located in a single VOB, so there's no way to say place menu X physically adjacent to the end of Clip X. Further, because of the Virtual Machine that DVDA implements to handle the complex functions you may actually be moving across 2 or 3 hidden menus before you get to your visible destination. --Scott

Why can't it determine Progressive/Interlace?
I believe that you are mis-understanding a couple of things. Generally in Vegas and in DVDA when you are setting progressive vs. interlaced, you are setting the output format. Vegas and DVDA both know whether a source file contains progressive or interlaced information. In the case of "Reduce Interlace Flicker" - that's an operation you want to have performed on a particular media clip, so Vegas cannot assume that you always want to apply this feature - in some cases its appropriate, in others it isn't. --Scott

Compression for menus
True still menus are encoded as a single I-frame and it doesn't get much better than that for quality since the entire screen is present. Motion menus though.... Since DVDA is going to re-encode a motion menu 99.5% of the time, and it's been a while since I last looked, but I don't recall any way to tell DVDA what bitrate to encode the motion menu at, then you are better off starting with source that hasn't been compressed or has received as little compression as possible. If you must start with compressed source material, then yes, higher bit rates will usually be better, but don't expect DVDA to maintain that bit rate into the end product. In general, I don't like to push the limits of something, because that's usually where you run into problems. Sure, the spec may say "bitrates up to ..." but at the top end, more equipment has trouble handling it. The other option is to use an authoring tool that doesn't re-encode the motion menu. I will frequently encode motion menus for DLP at 8Mbps. --Scott

Testing issue
CBR is not truly constant, it's a target encoders aim at and try to hit within a certain allowed deviation - its just that the deviation is much much smaller than what's allowed by VBR (usually). Last time I ran into a player with this type of problem, it turned out to be a succession of small short spikes in a row that pushed the decoder over the edge. Switching to a different encoder resolved the issue. Changing the offending video in some fashion may also help (you might try applying a small amount of blur on that section, or slowing it down to reduce the frequency of change). --Scott

Testing issue
It happens. Probably a bit rate spike is bothering the player since it's at the same location every time. Anything in particular going on at that point? Fast action, transition? One thing to do is get a bit rate analyzer to see if there is a spike at that point; as for getting rid of the spike, that's harder. Different encoder, lowering the CBR bitrate or going 2 pass VBR with a lower average and a lower maximum. --Scott

The audio and video should be of the same length. They cannot loop independent of each other. --Scott
