Vegas 14 Email Offer
Been using Vegas since version 4.0 and been on version 10 for 6 years, so went ahead and got the upgrade to 13/14. I switched over to DaVince Resolve and control surface for color grading. But I want to stick with Vegas as an editor because it's awesome and what I know well. My Neat Video Plug in still works with 13, so hopefully works well with 14. I'm hoping version 13/14 will be more versatile with Resolve.

Prores 10bit uncompressed workflow
The post house could not give me an AVI. Their machine puts out MOV and Prores. My other option was HDV tape but I chose direct to hard drive. The transfer looks amazing, so i don't have any regrets. The MFX file I rendered plays fine in the VLC player... The uncompressed AVI that i rendered played choppy in Windows Media Player, maybe the problem is in the media player?

I tried, but the post house charges $300 per hr. They would have to convert it to an AVI from the native capture, and I would be billed for that time.

I tried processing it as a MFX file and it plays just fine now in the VLC player. That at least allows me to view the footage at normal speed, but the MFX file is compressed down to 4.6GB. I need to do some color grading, velocity envelopes, and general editing. The original MOV file plays back slow in the Vegas timeline so I can't edit from it. Would this Cineform codec be a good intermediary file that I can use to edit?

My mistake... It is not a Prores, it's a uncompressed Quicktime 10bit 4:22 . I rendered the file as is, to a Video for Windows AVI HD 1080 24p YUV. I'll try rendering it as a MXF file and maybe it will play better

Film Transfer to HD
I talked to the lab today and they recommended ProRez 10 bit. Can Vegas 10 handle that? Do I need to download Quiktime first?

Film Transfer to HD
I'm also using an i5 750 with 1.5TB. I will be rendering it for Bluray and another render for Vimeo. I'm not all that familiar with full HD codecs yet, so i'm basically looking for a 1920x1080 version of an AVI (my older AVI SD transfers were about 4 gigs for 3 minutes). There are so many codec options for HD on my list, i'm not sure where to start. I have about 20 minutes of footage that will be scanned, and enough hard drive space to store it.

Sticky Playback on Vegas 10 Renders
I tried setting the bit rates to 8,000,000 and 3,000,000 and still had some frame freezes in the clips. I dunno, Vegas 8.0 doesn't have this problem so something must be currupt. I might do a reinstallation if i get get it to stop. Anyone else have this problem?

Thanks Bob. The bitrates are set the same for V8 and V10. Max is 9,500,000 Min is 192,000 with an average of 6,000,000. Everything else appears to be set identically too. However I just ran some more tests and your right, It does have to be something about the MPEG in V10 because AVI's from V10 play back fine. MPEG from V8 are working fine.... only MPEG in V10 is doing this.

I've been rendering to 8bit. I wonder if it has to do with the Neat Video plug in? WHen i loaded V10, I still has the older version of Neat Video and it caused some crashes at first. Then i updated neat Video to V10. The plugin worked fine after that, but maybe it caused a curruption of some kind? The PC is only 6 months old, not used for internet and not much installed except video capture and edit software.

If yes, it sounds like a problem with the source media" Yes and No. The problem IS in the same spot when playing the rendered file, whether on WMP or DVD. If I reopen the file in the time line it plays back smooth all the way through, and when I try to cut or alter scenes at the glitchy spot, the glitch just occur randomly somewhere else on the rendered file. My desktop is a i5 650 and renders very fast. I still have Vegas 8.0 on the same PC and don't get the same problem when i edit and render the same captured files.

Thanks, I have VLC player but it plays real wavey on that machine. I don't think it's the media player because the glitches stay in place when I burn to a DVD and watch it on my TV. I have the Main Concept encoder installed... and I don't get the problem with Vegas 8 on the same machine with the same files.

Sticky Playback on Vegas 10 Renders
My desktop is an i5 650. I updated my specs thanks. It's a new offline machine dedicated to editing, video and film capture. The film capture software only runs on 32bit OS for now, so that's what i'm using for now... The PC is still super fast. I did a test last night. First I rendered a 5 min spliced clip to an MPEG2 using Vegas 8.0 and it played back fine without any hang ups. Then I opened the same file with Vegas 10 and rendered a 5 min spliced clip. The Vegas 10 clip stuck and skipped over a few frames (duration is about a second for this error) 2 times in under 5 minutes. All I can think is to uninstall and reinstall. Any ideas?

V10 Crashes with Neat Video
I'm running 32bit for both V10 and Neat Video on this machine. It worked fine on Vegas 8.0, But i have not updated Neat Video since I got it last summer. I 'll see if I can find it. Thanks

Explorer not showing video files
Thanks TOG, that works! I have the same issue with Vegas Pro and Windows 7, except I can use File- Open to bring things into the timeline. I run Vista Ultimate on my desktop, and it;s all good there.

Yes, I'm using Windows 7 64 bit. I checked the "all files" tab in addition to the other two, but when I click on my documents, none of my media folders show up. I guess I can't use DVD Architect with the laptop... can't even open files up top.

Vegas 10 Trim with Trimmer
I think I got it, just different than I expected... I had to drag my marker to an end point, and then select the out. Just as if I were setting a loop region in the regular timeline (something I never do). I use the marker buttons, it's just not as easy as staking a start and end point, I have to drag it.

Vegas 10 Trim with Trimmer
I wasn't aware of the IN and OUT points to operate the trimmer, but I've tried it a few times now.... but when I hit "A" to add my selected region to the timeline, it takes everything past my in point, and doesn't recognise the out point. Am I doing something wrong?

Express card to eSata vs USB
I just bought a new drive last month with eSATA and firewire 800. Unfortunatley neither of those work properly on my PC or laptop. The PC has eSATA on the MB, as does the laptop. So I just stick to the USB 2.0 that worls rock solid all the time. It's a LaCie drive and I don't think they are too robust.

Kodak Color Tests from 1922!
"My 16mm Kodachrome II, Ektachrome MS taken in the late 60's and early seventies (35 years old) was almost totally wiped out colorwise before professional restoration and they did a very good job of it. JJK " Did you load/project it and see for yourself? Fading or degrading of film that age would most likely be from hostile storage conditions. Some of the older Ektachromes will fade a tad over a long period, but the Kodachromes are rock solid. I just projected a found reel of Kodachrome dated 1960 last month, and after 50 years it was pristine... No different than 16mm Kodachrome I shot in 2004, I see the same quality in films going back to the 40's on home movie transfers I do-
