GH4 footage import problems
Hi, I had an idea for a different approach to dealing with this issue, so I downloaded SharpDevelop and built StreamAlign. Having to run a script to fix the length of an event every time you drag a clip to the timeline simply wasn't going to work for me. Even worse, working with these files in the Trimmer is a nightmare because the audio track is squashed all the way to the left because the video track is so much longer. Basically, StreamAlign scans your project for clips with mismatched video and audio streams and creates a subclip of the source media with video and audio streams aligned to the same length. The subclip's length will match the length of the shorter stream (audio or video). You now have a clip that you can drag directly to the timeline with matching video and audio track lengths, no chopping necessary. Even better, you can also work with these clips in the Trimmer just like a normal clip, with video and audio tracks filling the full width of the Trimmer window. I've tested StreamAlign in a lot of different scenarios, but I need more testing from others. If you work with footage from the Panasonic GH4, GH3, FZ1000, or any other camera that Vegas opens with mismatched video/audio lengths, please download and test StreamAlign and send me your feedback :)

Hmm, I suppose subclip tagging is not something others have tried to do for their projects.

Thanks for the update. I sure hope they consider fixing this issue well, as Vegas is currently off the table as a NLE option until this issue is fixed.

Vegas 13 not saving regions and markers in videos
The trimmer has it's own save button for that; I don't think the get saved automatically. If you enable the "Automatically save trimmer markers and regions with media file" option in the preferences, they will indeed be saved automatically.

Yes, I spoke too soon. Thought I had my camera set to 24p when testing, but it was actually set to 60p. I've gone through all recording modes and logged which modes are read properly by Vegas and which are not: * NTSC: Only 30p and 60p modes are read properly (1080P and 4K) * PAL: All modes are read properly * Cinema: No modes are read properly It looks like there's a specific issue with 24p files. Using the FFMBC command in my previous post does resolve the issue though and all rewrapped files are read properly by Vegas.

Definitely Sony. The GH4's MOV files play fine in every other NLE/Media player I've tested, so this appears to be an issue specific to Vegas.

It's sad that we need a script to fix an issue like this in Vegas. Thankfully, there is a better solution: Record to MP4 (LPCM) instead of MOV Vegas has a problem properly reading the MOV files produced by the Panasonic GH3/GH4. Using the MP4 file container, the same codecs are used as the MOV format, but Vegas reads is perfectly fine. For existing footage, rewrap the MOV files into a MP4 container. In fact, writing the A/V streams to a new MOV file also resolves the issue. My guess is that there's something in the headers of the GH4's MOV files that trips Vegas up. To rewrap footage, use FFMBC with the following command: ffmbc -i <SourceFileName>.mov -vcodec copy -acodec copy -strict experimental "<OutputFileName>.mp4" As noted above, you're just copying the video and audio streams from the MOV file to a file with a MP4 container. No transcoding/recompression is being performed.

Hate to tell you, but this has been an issue since at least VP 10 with GH3/GH4 MOV files. I would suggest reporting the issue directly to Sony (there's no confirmation that they take anything reported only in the forums seriously).

Professional Client Video hosting solution?
Vimeo would definitely not be viable if I experienced all (or even just some) of the issues you have listed. Vimeo Pro has been very reliable for us thankfully. I would second what b.complex said against attempting to implement a self-hosted solution for streaming videos. If you're serving any amount of volume (e.g. high number of videos and/or high number of views), there is no way that a hosting provider that charges less than $200/year (or even 2x that) will give you any soft of acceptable performance.

Markers and Regions v/10.0
Subclips are nice, but they feel like so much more work as they're not as dynamically adjustable as regions (just drag the in/out point of a region in the trimmer and the region has been changed). You can view regions on a clip-by-clip basis in the Explorer tab by enabling "Region View" (from the Views button). When you select a file in the Explorer tab, you'll see a listing of all the regions in that file. You can then drag/drop any of these regions directly to the timeline (ala subclips) or open the file in the Trimmer zoomed into the selected region. I definitely find it odd that the Explorer tab has the regions view while the Project Media tab (where you would be more likely browsing media for a specific project) does not, but it works decently well for browsing through clips that I've logged to find a particular shot.

Are you sure you've evaluated Vimeo Pro and not Plus Vimeo Pro allows you to create Portfolios (that can be password-protected) that you can contain a selection of videos in your account. You can also change a portfolio's theme (from a selection of presets or a custom one). The cherry on top is that you can set a custom domain name for a portfolio, which ultimately means that you can create a fully branded solution that matches your own website pretty easily. For example, you can point a subdomain such as client-one.yourdomain.com to a portfolio you've set up with videos for your client ("Client One") that can look like the rest of your website and be password-protected for their eyes only. How are you delivering to client for review? If DVD, you can export your named regions from the timeline and import into DVD-A as subtitles using VASST SubText (FREE) Then you just have subtitles turned on as default when the DVD is played.

Again, not true. a business license from the city or state has NOTHING to do with how you report income and expenses with the IRS. Um, yeah, that's why I said, "in most states". People living in the US have to file taxes with both the state and the IRS, which have different requirements for writing off business expenses. While a business license with a state has nothing to do with your IRS filings, it is often necessary to file the necessary forms for your business income/expenses in that state

To be clear, there is no "freelance" classification recognized by the government. It's as simple as this, if you are receiving money for providing products and/or services, then you should be paying taxes on this. In most states, a business license is advisable even for a Sole Proprietor because it allows you to write off business expenses (equipment, fees, services, etc.) that you often cannot as an employee or the like. Regardless of whether you have a license or not, you should be paying the necessary fees and taxes (e.g. Fed gov requires self-employment tax, etc.). Failure to do so will result in greater fees down the line. I would take the advice of those saying that you should not file anything in your state until they notice you with a HUGE grain of salt. Late fees on back taxes (state and fed) are killers. Pay an accountant for an hour of time for them to get you started on managing your business. Determine how much you'll need to pay for taxes so that you can withhold that whenever you receive payment from a client so that when tax time comes, it will be simple to pay the necessary taxes.

SloMo and Workflow
It depends how slow you want the motion to be and what the target playback rate will be. For example: 60p can be slowed down to 40% of its original speed to match a native 24p project. No interpolation (i.e. new frames created) is necessary and can easily be done in Vegas simply by opening the properties of an event and changing the playback rate from 1 to 0.4. If you want to go slower than that, then Twixtor is a great product. Twixtor Pro and AE provide even more control over the quality of the retimed footage by using masks, etc.

Several ways to do this, one of which may be better depending on your workflow. 1) Save as image Save frame grab to PNG file (click on disk icon in video preview window) and bring image file into project. Extend duration to your heart's content. 2) Velocity Envelope * Add frame to timeline * Right click event and select Insert/Remove Envelope > Velocity * Set velocity envelope to 0% * Extend duration to your heart's content I haven't tested, but I imagine that there may be rendering advantages/disadvantages depending on the approach. For example, when used to speed up or slow down footage, the velocity envelope can have a distinct effect on render times. Not sure what sort of effect the velocity envelope has on render times when set to 0%. Something for you to test as you determine the best approach for your situation.

Um, AE makes no appearance in the video that I could see. It does feature Mocha for After Effects though... It's a standalone program that includes support for BCC so that you can track in Mocha and import that tracking data into Vegas (via BCC), and thus "do everything in Vegas" as you say.
