Spot laid up ...
yes maa'm. Scooting around the sky in a wingsuit. Discovered last week that parachute deployments have bent the bolt in my pelvis and snapped four out of six screws in my pelvis. Prolly not good news, but life is too short to live without adventure and excitement. We just set a new state record yesterday. Vegas has really caught on in the skydiving world when folks see the workflow speed compared to FCP and Premiere. Production Assistant and Vegas are the standards on several dropzones around the world, from Australia to Zimbabwe (literally).

Cameras: FX1 to NX5U?
I'd second Bob's comment, particularly if you've got an older computer. With a newer, multicore system, AVCHD isn't a drama unless you're running more than two streams and then it can be painful. For what it is, I really like the NXCAM.

Broadcast/Film projects & Vegas Pro Questions
First, the information contained in http://www.ctvdigital.com/discovery/producersguide/CGM_Tech_Specs_05.4.3.doc[/link is what they want, but even their own document isn't what they only accept. Second, the requirements in that document, excepting the Dolby E (which is spec'd as "not necessary" is the only thing you can't do in Vegas, although the C/C (608) only delivers over XDCAM. I have the same document from two years ago where it's said HDV can't be used at all, too. Same with PBS. They're a bitch to deal with, but it's how they maintain their integrity. The Three Tenors project we delivered was entirely cut in Vegas, and the acquisition went against their required acquisition formats too. Funny that CTV is documenting that XDCAM EX is acceptable but XDCAM HD/35Mbps isn't. Not to mention that I was just up north training them on EX (and Vegas). The bigger point is, while Vegas is a *great* tool, it's just a tool. Knowing Avid, FCP, and Premiere are all pretty valuable additions to your tool box.

OT: New to greenscreen
lite well. Lite weight. Be sure you know the direction of the sun/key on the background subject so you can match it in post. Avoid busy clothing. Avoid flyaway hair...... Light the singer as though the key doesn't exist. Then work the key in to place. No more than 4-5 liighs shoudlbe needed. Bounce a lot. typing ins a bus is creazy.

$2400 for PC for Vegas Pro - To much PC.. or Cost?
As a counter point to most of the posts; if you're working this machine hard, multiple copies of Vegas open, rendering, comping, etc.... the machine you spec is about right on, maybe even a little cheap. If you're just "hobbying around" with it, it might be overkill. In one channel we're working, the machine you're spec'ing would barely cut it.

ARAID might help, but nothing is gonna decode all 12 without some hiccups. Can you run in Draft, make your rough cuts, slip edit and RAM render? That's how I'd approach it since time is a factor.

Funny, I have a few books on the coffee tableI purchased that anyone can pick up and read and take anywhere they like. Seems simple. They can take any CD you've got lying on your table and listen to it anywhere they like too. And, can take any DVD you've got lying on the coffee table and watch that anywhere too. You're right, it *is* simple.

To further clarify your point; VASST is an official Sony partner. There are others that support the Vegas community that are not Sony partners, and their posts are not removed either. I'd submit that Sony is very lenient when there is mutual benefit to Sony, the community, and the provider of Vegas-related solutions.

OT: ArtBeats is giving away a clip a day!
Artbeats gets a premium price because: A-all their high-dollar work is 35mm acquired. Recently they've been acquiring with Red and other higher end systems (including multiple DSLR's shooting in sequence). B-Their footage is very unique. You'll find a lot of attempts to duplicate their footage, but rarely is it met in terms of quality. Even their Vline and other lower grade, less costly lines are generally better quality than most production libraries. They simply don't accept crap. A lot of libraries do. Having expensive footage assures some level of exclusivity to those that do buy it. For me, I like that. I know that the work I'm bidding won't have a dozen other people bidding with what footage I've got to offer. Artbeats also manages to have a large staff of people that will find/acquire what you need if they don't offer it (in many cases). Stock footage is what they do. It's all they do. Yes, I'm an Artbeats fan-boy. We've made a lot of revenue using their content in a lot of very broad market channels. A Ferrari or Maserati costs a lot more than a VW for a reason; they last longer, have a lower number of vehicles manufacturered, they take excellent care of their customers, and their rarity defines the financial (and often social) class of the customer using their content. Artbeats is the Ferrari of stock footage. Fortunately, they also sell VW's too.

OT: switching to hi-def
I'd second the recommendation for the Intensity. Switching to HD is not a simple task. When you buy an HD camcorder, especially a highly compressed format, you're essentially buying a big semi-trailer filled with gold. But...if you dont' have a tractor/truck to pull it with...you're kinda stuck with a trailer filled with gold sitting in the desert. Can't do much with it...

Alvin, Musicvid gave you a very general, but very accurate answer. If you want to discuss at the level you took it, there are thousands of videos of the Microsoft visualizations. If they haven't attempted to protect from those, then they cannot attempt to protect from yours. Pretty simple, really. What I meant was (regardless of the producer auspices) that the amount of financial (tangible) "gain" acheived by leveraging the "subject content" does bear upon the magnitude of the infraction, and any awards. I can't sell Cheetos with a Poster of MJ hanging behind me, for instance ... His estate might use that as a basis for a claim against any profits (above trend) that exploiting MJ's image might have promoted. So ... Some kid dancing to the BatMan theme, in his pajamas, on public access cable broadcast, would have a commensurately more limited liability. (nor does this damage or significantly cheapen the value of the property). Additionally, if the sound-track is a pristine digital (ripped) copy, versus a very poor recording of his room, where the music was playing on his clock-radio, ... the usefullness of the quality ... also is "factored". I'd suggest there is a lot you don't quite understand about copyright, because much of what you wrote in this paragraph is very in accurate. You're confusing damages with violation, and they are two very distinct and different things. A violation is a violation. Period. Damages are how much someone may be compensated for violation. A violation without damages is still a violation. I'm not an attorney either. I just play one on the Internet. ;-)

Based on what I remember from Dr. Stockham, you're both right. Sample rate and bitdepth were due to tape, and disc size was because of Bolero..... That's sure going back in time...

When are you going to tell all these people that they are wasting their time recording audio at 24/96, since we already have the perfect Wave codec at 16/44.1, that, according to your logic and since it's uncompressed, can perfectly capture every single thing the human ear can detect? Something tells me you don't quite understand the mechanics of dynamic range, sampling frequency, bit depth, and the ear. Do you know why Dr. Stockham didn't want 44.1 as a standardized audio sampling frequency, and fought it very hard for a long period of time? Do you know why 44.1 was chosen? Some people are very happy with low resolution video files, others prefer to work with higher resolutions. Same with audio. You might want to google "Nyquist" for some additional information. To the OP, a single codec has appeal, but at the end of the day...codecs are what drive development, and man o' man...have we seen some super development thanks to codecs. Although I am very partial to J2K as a scalable, single form model.

OT: Audio-Technica Pro 88W?
At the price range, the Pro88W is stinkin' super impressive. These are regularly used in very high budget films and productions because they sound so very good. The price point prevents them from using companders in the system, so they sound great, if the input source is clean. Can't say enough good about them for what they are. We keep 4-6 of them around most of the time. They're also super for one Xmit/many recieives when you need to ship audio to multiple locations.

New VASST plug-in - Mayhem - cool
I started jumping before the stitches were outta my butt and knee. Being stupid, but flying is an addiction worse than crack, or so I'm told. Yeah, started flying a few months ago. We're in Hawaii now, setting up a couple Vegas stations for the dropzone here. mAyhEm is a pretty good tool for this market too. It fits the ADD model that skydiving seems to embue. You're gonna love ScatterShot3D too....I can see how it will apply in the work you just showed.

Nice to hear the positive responses. One day I'll share the story of how this plug came to be. The promo vid you see isn't nearly close to what all it can do; I was asked to create something just a couple hours prior to getting on a plane for a trans-oceanic flight. This was the result of roughly 20 mins of playing with files already on my 'puter. Applied to text, stills, video, it's a great "livener-upper" and is a super fun transitional tool as it will grab and randomize (or not) video from both selected events. One cool thing is to drop it on static text for giggles. ] has both a single line of video (not two, so it's not transitional) and has static text at the beginning. Zoom is set to 0-100%, with one of the presets applied. This video took about 3 minutes, including the multicam (using Ultimate S multicam tool). Fun stuff, and have found myself using it a lot. I used to do this by hand, it took forever. Looking to see what others do with it. Presets are a lot of fun.

DSLR help
This is a point that folks need to hear over and over. Use an External monitor via HDMI. Calibrate the monitor.
