It's not Sony's responsibility to worry about making it play nice in their NLE. ]/i] I'm afraid I have to disagree (although I once agreed with you). Broadcasters are buying AVCHD cams like there was no tomorrow. They will NOT transcode. They don't have time. Like it or not (I don't) AVCHD is now an acquisition and editing format. It's a kiss of death for any NLE that can't manage it in some fashion, IMO. Vegas has sold several hundred seats in the sports world, simply because it can edit natively from the MSPD or SD card. It needs to continue down this path of optimizing the decode. Unfortunately, Sony relies heavily on Main Concept for this technology.

but as far as AVCHD editing goes, Edius and Neo Booster kick Vegas butt really hard. Depending on hardware/software configuration, I'm sure this is true. However, if the machine is configured well, with out any background processes, I'm not sure that being able to go 160mph is much better than being able to go 155mph, when there is less ability to control the vehicle. We're using preview/full for all the edits these guys are doing, and they're very happy with performance similar to what DV was doing 10 years ago. The irony is, 10 years ago, some people couldn't get DV to run without hardware either. Perhaps I simply remember those days so well, and don't expect to play out multiple streams in real-time with FX, when dealing with highly compressed formats.

In my experience, it's a combination of software and hardware configuration. We're building turnkey setups for extreme sports companies that are turning 200 videos acquired in AVCHD on a daily (yes, *daily) basis. AVCHD renders quickly and easily on an 8 core system, running as many as 4 instances of Vegas at once. The machines are made lean as can be, with virtually nothing running. They are connected to the web for YouTube uploads. In short....these operations don't mess around with slow systems or slow delivery. They MUST deliver video on disc, PDA, and the web within less than 10 mins or they're toast. Vegas *could* do a better job of decoding, and could definitely do a better job of leveraging GPU. It could do a few things better. But it *is* plenty fast for what most AVCHD users are doing, and better than any app that isn't converting for edit first. Bringing Edius into the discussion is appropriate (except it converts) while bringing VLC or WMP into the discussion isn't really relevant, as they don't have to buffer like an NLE does.

Camtasia AVI files in V9.0
Use the TechSmith TSCC codec, it only works in 32 bit. It makes it easy. Just a pita. You can also convert them fairly fast to .mxf for use in 64 bit. Your rrender time will decrease dramatically if you have a long project. I wish Techsmith would get their act together.

They're compatible in terms of work speed/flow, but 30p to 24p is generally fairly ugly. 24p goes half decently to 30p. I'd create a 30p timeline and upsample the 24p to 30. Unless terribly desperate, I wouldn't take the 30p to 24p.

Why "ten?" Because lists seem to come in groups of "ten." I'd hoped that the community could stay on track for the ten things they personally feel Vegas does better than other NLE's. Further, even if you haven't worked with other NLE's doesn't mean you don't have a right to an opinion about Vegas' best features.

NAB 2010 - What to expect?
Don't forget Dweezil Zappa's performance at the Vegas Users event on April 12th.... :-) Lotsa great stuff to be announced, no boring/long keynote speaker, just good food, fun performance this year, and lots of socializing for everyone. Oh, and the fun giveaways. Look at Convergent Design for some cool new tools, look at RED, look to the new Sony AVCHD cams in the pro lineup, and more. Some new displays, 3D tech, and storage/transfer devices will be a highlights of the show, IMO.

Good delivery format/container to send to client?
I've had no difficulty opening .mxf files on a very broad number of Apple systems with FCP. Of course, the Sony plug must be installed, so the easiest thing to do is include it on the HDD or data DVD used to xport the media to another system. This is done on at least a weekly basis with a couple clients we string for. Same thing at broadcast clients; they're shipping internally via .mxf file generated in Vegas. True, there are two variants of the package, but that doesn't make it more nor less compatible. Premiere, Avid, FCP, Edius all open the Vegas-packaged .mxf file without issue. If the source were different than AVCHD, I might consider another codec, but with HDV such as 10 Connect or ABC Tampa Bay, or AVCHD...I'm gonna run with .mxf every time. http://www.abcactionnews.com/content/news/local/story/North-Carolina-man-killed-in-skydiving-accident/lXYsHf1fnkiso7x1zB--og.cspx was converted in under a minute and on the air from the truck.

If source is AVCHD, the render to ,.mxf is very fast. Using DnX or Cineform is slower in Vegas. You'll lose/gain/change nothing in going to .mxf. It's a container that every NLE on the planet can read.

Playback in Vegas is buffered, because it must be in order to anticipate clips downstream. Playback in the MXF view isn't. {edit} That said, I'm not having issues with stuttering/dropped frames on playback when the timeline is compressed. If the timeline is zoomed out, then the area to be buffered is greater, and will often stutter.

Nope. In fact, if you send it in for repair, the manufacturer is REQUIRED to destroy it. There is more to the discussion than "big bad goverrnment" but given that it's a done deal, discussing it has about as much impact as telling Henry Ford that automobiles won't replace the horse. For future needs (well within all of our lifetimes ((assuming I don't bounce again)) ) the need for the bandwidth is there. It's already allocated. It's not as though it was an "unknown" and it's been heavily marketed for several years so that people have had time to make the transition. We haven't been able to buy a 700MHz wireless from a manufacturer for several years now. Sucks, but that's progress.

Semi OT: What is 4:2:2 Mpeg 2 for?
DVDA will re-compress the 4;2;2 into a 4;2;0 stream. I believe the reason you see some tools offering the 4:2;2 MPEG option is to match acquisition formats for editing compatibility. It cannot be used for delivery to DVD. It can, however, feed other 4:2:2 devices directly. I'd agree with Course, you'll see 4:2;2 on displays in the higher end sooner than later, so it may at some point, become an option and perhaps a standard. It was proposed to SMPTE at one time (for delivery).

What's Happened to Vegas?
It's not about money, it's about keeping our options open so we don't keep getting 'LOCKED-IN". I'd have to strongly disagree. It is all about money. It's all about accomplishing tasks quickly with quality. End of story. If you've got the time to play around with the video, then you're a serious hobbyist at best and not reporting to anyone else. And that angle is fine, but for the broad majority of Vegas users, it's about turning and burning. We don't have a need for the old interlace standards for TV broadcast ever since they switched to DTV, unless that's part of your customers needs, and that's understandable. Actually, we do have those same standards, even for mobile delivery and other delivery mechanisms both now known and unknown. Maybe your world is geared only to the web, which is why you're finding yourself postulating about all these strange codecs, which is not at all a new issue for any NLE. DivX over a decade ago, anyone? They probably don't even know that they are being passed over, the customer probably feeds the "new media" jobs elsewhere to avoid your diatribe about all the rules. All of our clients (and in-house) shoot on a RED, SI2k, XDCAM, XDCAM EX, Varicam, HDV, or AVCHD. A couple use TSCC. None of them shoot on Flips, Webbies, or any other absurdity. A few shoot GoPro HD's for crashcams. Vegas manages all of them just fine. Yes, DVCProHD requires some manipulating that is a PITA, but that's not a Sony problem. Panasonic has been exceptionally vocal about how they will not allow Sony to license their decoder. The people that ARE shooting on odd-ball codec camcorders aren't hiring editors. And editors that need to capture content from the web, generally know how to go about doing that. Knowledge is fleeting indeed. And it's easy to get passed up. But from a point of view in the professional world, 99% of what you're postulating is a straw man argument about what might be, and what likely never will be. It's the same BS we heard 15 years ago with DV and the various DV codes, and the same BS we heard when HDV first originated. And the same BS we're hearing now about AVCHD. Is *everything* compliant? Nope....and likely never, ever will there be a time when everything available is entirely importable and compliant. There will always be the 'geek-fixes' and sure, they work fine for the pimply-faced kid farting around with video in his basement making Doom and WOW videos for YouTube. But they don't play in the paying, working market, and the standards that exist in the working, paying market (for the most part) work very well.

You're very right, Bud. There are some new tools. And they are useful. And they're not self-evident. And they cost a lot of time (=money) to get to work properly and/or efficiently. A good portion of those working in this community don't have the time to take machines offline to develop kludged workflows that won't function in a team environment. It's always good to learn. It's always good to be productive. Sometimes the learning process can dramatically hinder the production process. That's why at the top end, there are standards, most of which Vegas supports. At the bottom end, as manufacturers of devices do whatever they can to gain an edge, to avoid royalties, or to hedge on encoder costs, there will always be slow growth. If that growth comes at the expense of the viability and speed of Vegas (which is its primary advantage over other apps), then most productive folks would just as soon see Vegas not support those low end needs. Vegas Movie Studio would be more suitable.

Vegas chokes on .mov files?
Bear in mind that Vegas merely calls on QT to decode anything in a .mov package, even if it's DV in a .mov package. Quicktime has periodically had very weird issues with all NLE systems, including Apple's own NLE in the past. You shoulda seen the nightmare that QT3 brought to the table. Roll back QT to an older version, you'll generally see immediate improvement/repair.

Actually, making a PVC frame stand is easy. Use a T connector on the bottom two legs, and add 12"-18" of PVC to both sides of the T so that you can put sandbags or other weight on them to hold them up/in place.

Muttley - music rights assurances?
With the context of that thread; I don't know that I'd lose much sleep over the Master Recording and sync rights (two different issues). Generally, the label will provide one and the publisher the other. Often, the label and the publisher are co-owned and associated. The band may own the publishing rights and the label own the Master, and any percentage divided between the two of them as well. But... In the market you're looking to tap, I'd suggest that the band likely recorded the songs in their basement or hired studio and own all rights to the songs. However, bands break up. You could very easily find yourself editing a song, band breaks up, bass player claims ownership and tells the band they can't do anything further with the song without buying out his share. The easy way to do this is to help the band understand that between themselves, they need to agree who the songwriter cred goes to and who owns the master. You bear no culpability in most any of this, so long as the band provides reps/warranties that they have the rights to replicate and sync the Master. Getting all band members on camera at once, giving you permission is the cheap/easy way to deal with this. It's a waiver of sorts, and not an exact contract, but it would be enforceable for both you and the band, should a problem arise.
