Who Really Makes the Disc? Realize that most media is produced by a relatively small number of factories, located in several different places. These factories are mostly present in Taiwan, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, China and India. There are more, but those are the largest ones. The best media generally comes from Japan, Taiwan and Singapore. The worst typically comes from China and Malaysia. The blank disc brand name on the package means almost nothing. Apple is a great brand, but they do not make their own discs, instead outsourcing to a company like Mitsubishi Chemicals. Common companies like Memorex, Maxell and Imation all outsource to media vendors. Mitsubishi also makes the discs for Verbatim, etc. It is the media ID that is important, as it reveals the disc manufacturer. Unfortunately, this is not written on packaging or anywhere else. Companies want consumers to be oblivious to this sort of behind-the-scenes information. The Media ID is also used by your DVD burner to determine the burn parameters which includes the maximum burn speed. I recommend that you use the freeware "DVD Identifier" to read the media ID to learn who *really* made the discs in your box: http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/

Low System Memory Error - Am I missing something?
It hasn't even been a year this time... It's been a year, so here's a repost.. Low Memory or Out of Memory does not mean "Not enough RAM", though adding RAM can sometimes fix a "Low Memory" warning. A "Low Memory" warning means that you have exceeded your commit limit. You need either a bigger page file, more physical memory, or both. One of the biggest sources of confusion over Windows memory usage is the whole concept of virtual memory compared to physical memory. Windows organizes memory, physical and virtual, into pages. Each page is a fixed size (typically 4 KB). To make things more confusing, there’s also a pagefile. Many Windows users still think of this as a swap file, a bit of disk storage that is only called into play when you absolutely run out of physical RAM. In versions of Windows starting with Vista, that is no longer the case. The most important thing to realize is that physical memory and the page file added together equal the commit limit, which is the total amount of virtual memory that all processes can reserve and commit. When the pool of commit memory goes low, it triggers the "Low Memory" warning from Windows. When a program needs more memory from the commit pool that is available, it halts with the "Low Memory" error. To add to the confusion, Windows also suggests that you can "close open applications" without telling you that all processes commit memory from the pool. Even if you only have one application running according to the Task Manager (which is impossible, by the way), you still have dozens of running processes in the background. For example - Windows loads MS Office applications into memory so that their applications will appear to load faster than the competition. Your web browser program also consumes an awful lot of RAM. Try rebooting and do not run any Office or browser programs.

"Espionage" is a stretch for some bungling thieves. It was a bungled theft, not espionage, add the American manufacturers who seriously compounded the problem by continuing to ship PC's with the faulty components.

GoPro Protune - how do you tweak it in Vegas
"I did run some footage through Cineform Studio and created a massive MOV file but after putting into the timeline and rendering out an MP4 file, it was not any better than just dropping the raw footage into the timeline with my adjustments above and rendering out to the same format MP4. I am always using the fantastic script from Vegasvideo.de using Handbrake to create these MP4's and they are amazingly better than any of the built in codecs from Sony or Mainconcept." Can we see examples?

SSDs good for 1,000 years of use
"Maximum PC" magazine said recently that they have been using the same SSD's for years with thousands of benchmark tests on whatever PC they are thrashing and they see no life limits yet. I think the quote was, "...if there's a finite life to SSD's, we haven't found it yet, and we thrash them daily".

"I can't think of anything electronic that isn't amazingly reliable. , Electrolytic capacitors." Did you forget about the millions of PC mainboards that failed prematurely with "puffy electrolytics" about 10 or 15 years ago? If you restore a vintage radio the FIRST thing you do before ever powering it up is to replace the electrolytics. Now, a carbon film resistor from 1950 is just as good today as it was then.

OT - Anyone use Win7 "MKLINK" to Free SSD space?
For your problem, just tell Windows where to put the various temporary system files, especially "My Documents", "My Pictures", etc. You'll have to consult your browser instructions for relocating that cache.

Project Media Wrong thumbnails Bug?
Try this: When the number of files in the thumbnails folder reaches 255, Vegas can stop responding or display the wrong thumbnail. Cleaning thumbnails folder (C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Sony\Vegas Pro\12.0\Media Pool Thumbnails) may help (and it can't hurt since Vegas will rebuild the thumbnails as needed. Vegas generates the thumbnail files when you scroll in the Project Media window.
