Vegas interupts during loading
The 'opening window' is called a splash screen. This may help.... Check if you have the FileIOSurrogate process left running in memory. This can prevent a new instance of the program from starting up. Exit Vegas then open the Task Manager, and look in the Processes Tag. Sort the list by Name. If you see FileIOSurrogate running, right-click and tell Task Manager to Kill the process. After that, the program should start up normally and relaunch a new copy of FileIOSurrogate. There should be no fileIOSurrogate process running if Vegas is not. There should be only one instance of FileIOSurrogate running for each instance of Vegas (Vegas120.exe in the process list). You may need to refresh the task manager window to make sure.

" Do you know if its better to render with a specific file type other than MP4?" Where is it going? If YouTube or Vimeo, it really doesn't matter since they recompress the video anyway.

Project too big ....
The render as 2-pass option still doesn't know what your video contains. A one-hour talking head interview or panel presentation will render a smaller MPEG file than a one-hour sports video with lots of pans and changing backgrounds.

With VBR, It's impossible to estimate the compressed file size without compressing the video. This is because the compression is a moving target. Scenes with little motion will compress easily, and scenes with a lot of motion and changing background need a lot more compression. If your VIDEO_TS folder in Windows is 4.3Gb (as reported by Windows Explorer) or less, then it's fine to burn your DVD.

DVD Architect 6.0 crashes with memory error
It's been a year, so here's another repost.. Low Memory or Out of Memory does not mean "Not enough RAM", though adding RAM can sometimes fix a "Low Memory" waning. A "Low Memory" warning means that you have exceeded your commit limit. You need either a bigger page file, more physical memory, or both. One of the biggest sources of confusion over Windows memory usage is the whole concept of virtual memory compared to physical memory. Windows organizes memory, physical and virtual, into pages. Each page is a fixed size (typically 4 KB). To make things more confusing, there’s also a pagefile. Many Windows users still think of this as a swap file, a bit of disk storage that is only called into play when you absolutely run out of physical RAM. In versions of Windows starting with Vista, that is no longer the case. The most important thing to realize is that physical memory and the page file added together equal the commit limit, which is the total amount of virtual memory that all processes can reserve and commit. When the pool of commit memory goes low, it triggers the "Low Memory" warning from Windows. When a program needs more memory from the commit pool that is available, it halts with the "Low Memory" error. To add to the confusion, Windows also suggests that you can "close open applications" without telling you that all processes commit memory from the pool. Even if you only have one application running according to the Task Manager (which is impossible, by the way), you still have dozens of running processes in the background. For example - Windows loads MS Office applications into memory so that their applications will appear to load faster than the competition. Your web browser program also consumes an awful lot of RAM. Try rebooting and do not run any Office or browser programs.

Nested .veg file rendering issues
The preview has nothing to do with the render, and the nested .veg files 'render as' to whatever your current project properties and 'render as' template are set to, just like any source media on the same timeline. There is no re-rendering. Are the project properties of the embedded veg file the same as your master project?

Clock speed vs core count
I disagree. Years ago I hosted a Rendertest database (www.mmdv.com/sonyvegas/rendertest, the password is 'vegasuser') In the same processor family, the processor clock speed ruled, but when the few users with more than the common four cores posted results, the 6 and 8 core processors were the fastest. The dual-Xeons blew everyone else out of the water.

i bought a controller board and a ten-slot case. I don't recall where, it's been so long ago, but I recall that both were about $300. I bought $20 DVD drives at Microcenter. I wish - that I had thought the layout just a bit better. Yes, it's a ten-drive controller board, but I need an eleventh slot for the source DVD. My source drive sits on top of the cabinet. Don't bother with the HDD route for your master. You first have to burn a DVD to copy to the HDD anyway. Using it is dirt simple - just load the master, then put blank DVD's in each of the of the drives. The copy process begins after there is no drawer activity for about 30-seconds, giving me plenty of time to drop in the blanks. I've never had a bad copy, but once in a while I accidentally put two blanks in a drive.

If DVDA has to rerender anything, then the file is not DVDA compliant from Vegas. If it's the audio, then I don't bother fixing it, but the video file should never rerender / recompress in DVDA.

That's because there is no Uninstall File. Just reinstall it. Vegas doesn't do an "update" where it first checks what's installed, it just installs everything.

Does it always take two hours to crash? That sure sounds like some resource is being consumed. Use the Resource Monitor to watch the memory. Select the memory tab then single-click on dvdarch in the process tab. Watch the Commit (kb) value. Note the number then come back after an hour. It should not change. There's not much that can just abruptly end a program. Here's a long shot - Open the Task Manager, Processes tab, click on "View" then "Select Columns". Check the box for GDI Objects then OK. In the Applications tab, right click on DVDA, then "Go To Process". Watch the GDI Objects value for the DVDA process. Once any process hits 10,000 GDI Objects, it’s terminated. As I said unlikely, it is a way that a program can end abruptly.

You're going to have a long wait for Sony to fix your PC. Go to the Reliability Monitor, double click on the critical event corresponding to DVDA stopping and see if there's a clue in the fault signature.

Seriously, if you even keep the computer long enough to see the "Remaining Life" drop to near zero, you will probably be running an 8-core, 4GHz PC and this one is in the grandkids playroom.

The "Eject" operation is not needed on a hard- disk drive in a docking station. If Windows thinks the drive is "Removable", then you should make it a habit to "Eject" the drive before removing it. No hard-disk drive will be determined to be a "Removable" drive. (Try it: Start, cmd, diskpart, list volume, look at the "Type" column.) The "Eject" operation flushes the write cache and unallocates the drive letter from Windows. But it is unnecessary for hard-disk drives. There isn't even an option in the context menu if you right-click on a drive in the Computer window (Start, Computer). Hot Swap has nothing to do with data - Stringer is correct that How Swap means the ability to remove a device without powering down. Hot-Swap connections were in use before there was data - notice that the ground pin on your AC cords are longer to make sure that the appliance is grounded before applying power. Thunderbolt and USB are Hot-Swap because the ground pins are longer than the data pins. Are you letting DVDA render your files? Big mistake. You should render the DVDA compatible files in Vegas using the appropriate DVDA or AC3 templates.

Handling a hard drive and touching the circuit board on the bottom, perhaps even bumping several together or (perish the thought) dropping one from even a few inches?" No problems here - I handle bare drives daily and often drop them as much as an inch as I shuffle through my drives in a drawer. Haven't lost one yet. Ten years ago I would have handled my drives much more carefully, but today's drives are remarkably robust. And in a few years, you will be using SSD's only as the price is approaching $1 per Gb. Rotating iron-oxide discs are just below $1 per Gb on average.
